Maddad Report post Posted August 21, 2005 Folks, How do you pronounce "pwn" or "pwned"? There's a Wikipedia article about it with several pronunciation options at Wikipedia: Pwn. I prefer the version that rhymes with "soon." (See the Welsh option - I think it's the 7th one.) Dave

Kendai Report post Posted August 25, 2005 I think the main reason that people pronounce pwn as "pawn" is because the literate mind is set up to identify words quickly, even if the entire word is read. Although the word "pwn" is missing any sort of vowel and therefore is technically unpronounceable, the mind quickly fills in a vowel to make it pronounceable. Since "pawn" is a word that is relatively known and used, this is the pronounciation the mind most often chooses. I know, I'm a nerd
Aislinn Report post Posted August 25, 2005 Didn't it originate as a typo of "own" though? ...As in "I own you" blah blah...So saying P"own"(rhymes with own) would make more sense.
Kendai Report post Posted August 25, 2005 Absolutely true (see Wikipedia on its origin ), but the brain doesn't typically associate the word "own" as quickly as the word "pawn", since there is only the vowel missing and the brain needs to fill it in quickly. The human brain is quite quirky if you think about it
McMantis Report post Posted August 26, 2005 Most definately P"own". I say it in rl all the time, Muahahaha.
Arnieman Report post Posted August 26, 2005 dunno about others, but sure at first look, I saw "pwn" as "pawn". However, I keep it even knowing the "own" typo connection, as I like to think of life as a big chess analogy. Think of it, which is more ownage - to literally kill someone, or to be able to play someone as a pawn?
