Question

Hey!

I was asked (read->forced) to write few words about MMORPGs for my uni magazine. It would be great if you could tell why you started to play MMORPG (Eternal Lands in that case) and (thx Kit:D) why you continue to play it!

Thank all who will answer this question!

Perhaps the question shouldn't be why we started, but why we continue?

I started because I read an article talking about the game and I thought "what the heck". I stay because I love the community and have mad many friends (both in game and in real life).

I guess I started playing EL because I like playing video games and someone told me about this one. I keep playing it because the graphics are pretty good (least compared to other mmorgs I've played like runescape) and even though it really needs more quests I like the overall playing experience. I also like the community and the forums.. You get a chance to talk to people from all over the world and read their opinions and views.

Course there's no real point/goal to my playing.. cept to max out all my abilities in the game.. hopefully I won't get bored after that point. :o

I began to play because I was searching on google for a free MMORPG that would occupy my time whem I'm bored at night and don't feel like playing an FPS. After I started playing EL, I stopped playing FPSs for a while, then started playing again, just barely at all.

I continue to play because of all the people here. :o

Well i Started because i wanted to try something new instead of my normal XBox video game. Also some friends of mine were playing and it looked interesting.

The other thing was I played RPGs before which alot of fun so i thought this would be too and it was. EL is great game and has a lot of potential

I previously played a 2D Space RPG I started getting bored (as most people do after playing a game for 2 years or more and went around looking for new games. Perhaps that had limited PK places (in the previously mentioned game, everywhere outside of Ports/ Planets and Stations are PK and those three places can be raided and you will be thrown out of them after a raid as been done and then you'll be killed by the raid escorts :-p), well actually that makes it no safe places in that game....

But Aside from that I was wanting a game I could do stuff in other then Hunting/ Raiding/ Trading/ Resourcing. Stuff like Manufactuing and perhaps crafting. I looked around and eventually found this game, I noticed it worked on my poor computer and decided to try it out.

Since then I have stopped actively playing due to commitments I need to keep in the 2D Space game, but if the next round of that game is boring I shall start to be active in EL again :-)

I like very much playing RPG's, the part i like most is to lvl up my char (i guess i'm what Lyanna would call an achiver). But all single-player RPG's end sometime, and then i got to start a new 1 from scratch.

So EL is my first (and only so far) MMORPG, and i started it thinking i can play it a little at a time, lvling up, and my lvls will remain there no matter what happends. Little did i know...

In the meantime, i met a lot of fun and/or frendly ppl, and got to have some friends. That's why i play now (and still for the lvls too, when i have the time).

I couldn play my old game cos it took too much time (it was real time and when you were logged out your cities could be destroyed) so i started to look for a new one, el was near the top on mpogd at the time, i tried it and liked the fact nobody could rape me while i was offline so i could play when i had time or when i felt like playing

I started 2 play becaus of my older brother, he talked about EL and i thought it didn't sound like anything special but when he was over at my place and installed it i thought it was a great game, and i still do!

I keep playing EL becaus i love the game and i've found alot of nice ppl 2 talk 2 in it.

There's alot of things u can do and if u get bored in 1 thing u have others u can chose from and do that instead.

I think it's fun 2 try 2 get my lvls up and be able 2 make new things, it takes alot of work but when u have alot of friends 2 talk 2 the time flies by fast.

because it's too boring playing single player, by yourself..

I prefer multiplayer, actually more like mmo...

more fun playing with friends..

I was tired of the repetitive gameplay exp. in common multiplayer games such as cs or wc3. So I started to check out MMORPG. At first I tried commercial games, but since I was a student by then, I couldn't afford them. A few months ago I found out about EL and decided to try it. Well I was really amazed by the friendliness of many people I met in the first few days, so I contiued play the game. Nowadays it's something between 'addiction' and meeting my online friends that makes me play EL.

My brother told me about this game and since I was leaving another MMORPG, I decided to give it a go.

Why do i keep playing it after some 15 months?

The answer is simply; I got hooked! :o

In-depth, I like the option to PK or not to PK in this game. Then, of course, there is a community, meaning lots of nice players to interact with and guilds to run or participate in. That part is very fun and offer me a relaxation from my day-to-day matters (like work...)

I had read a lot about MMORPGs like Ultima Online and Everquest, and as I am not very social IRL, I thought that would be an interesting way to meet some new people. But the money factor was something that kept me away, especially since lots of people claimed to have become addicted to MMORPGs. At some point I tried a search for "MMORPG" on happypenguin, and found one game that seemed to be what I was looking for - EL.

Nowadays I only play to be with the friends that I did meet, the levelling up part of most MMORPGs is just so boooring. I'm still looking for an MMORPG without that part. Back when I joined EL didn't have the boring leveling up stuff, and I think I actually liked it better back then.
