Problems with the update

Recommended Posts

TWIMC: I have had 2 segfaults in about 30 minutes. Is there an error log somewhere that I can submit to the devs?

Is it possible that you compile the game in the debugging mode and run it under GDB?

I'm sorry, English is not my mother language.

Do I understand you right if you ask me to do the following:

* get the sources from cvs

* compile in debugging mode

* run the game under GDB so that I can dump a core or do an strace or whatever it is real programmers do?

I am not a real programmer, I have absolutely no experience at all with that. So I would need some guidance...

I've got lot of "Z-figting" type glitches in perespective mode. They dsappear if I zoom in or switch to isometric, (FPS seems to not be affected.)

System: WinME, ForceWare 74.81

GLINFO:

Video card: GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X/AGP/SSE2

Vendor ID: NVIDIA Corporation

OpenGL Version: 1.5.3

Supported extensions: GL_ARB_imaging GL_ARB_multitexture GL_ARB_point_parameters GL_ARB_point_sprite GL_ARB_shader_objects GL_ARB_shading_language_100 GL_ARB_texture_compression GL_ARB_texture_cube_map GL_ARB_texture_env_add GL_ARB_texture_env_combine GL_ARB_texture_env_dot3 GL_ARB_texture_mirrored_repeat GL_ARB_texture_rectangle GL_ARB_transpose_matrix GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object GL_ARB_vertex_program GL_ARB_vertex_shader GL_ARB_window_pos GL_S3_s3tc GL_EXT_texture_env_add GL_EXT_abgr GL_EXT_bgra GL_EXT_blend_color GL_EXT_blend_minmax GL_EXT_blend_subtract GL_EXT_clip_volume_hint GL_EXT_compiled_vertex_array GL_EXT_Cg_shader GL_EXT_draw_range_elements GL_EXT_fog_coord GL_EXT_multi_draw_arrays GL_EXT_packed_pixels GL_EXT_paletted_texture GL_EXT_pixel_buffer_object GL_EXT_point_parameters GL_EXT_rescale_normal GL_EXT_secondary_color GL_EXT_separate_specular_color GL_EXT_shared_texture_palette GL_EXT_stencil_wrap GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc GL_EXT_texture_cube_map GL_EXT_texture__EXT_texture_env_combine GL_EXT_texture_env_dot3 GL_EXT_texture_filter_anisotropic GL_EXT_texture_lod GL_EXT_texture_lod_bias GL_EXT_texture_object GL_EXT_vertex_array GL_IBM_rasterpos_clip GL_IBM_texture_mirrored_repeat GL_KTX_buffer_region GL_NV_blend_square GL_NV_fence GL_NV_fog_distance GL_NV_light_max_exponent GL_NV_packed_depth_stencil GL_NV_pixel_data_range GL_NV_point_sprite GL_NV_register_combiners GL_NV_texgen_reflection GL_NV_texture_env_combine4 GL_NV_texture_rectangle GL_NV_vertex_array_range GL_NV_vertex_array_range2 GL_NV_vertex_program GL_NV_vertex_program1_1 GL_SGIS_generate_mipmap GL_SGIS_multitexture GL_SGIS_texture_lod GL_SUN_slice_accum GL_WIN_swap_hint WGL_EXT_swap_control

I'll try newer drivers tomorrow, but are there other things i can do?

Agni: No, nothing you can do right now, we hope to address some of the Z fighting issues in the next update.

JandolAnganol: Yes, that is what I an asking.

Hmm.. do you have a CVS client?

What distro are you using?

This was reported on the last version too, but a "cls" command in console mode STILL will crash the client sometimes. Today's crash was on Win-2K.

Whenever I open EL up, it says I "Can't resolve with the server. Perhaps you are not connected to the internet" (which I am) "or you DNS server is down! (*doesn't know how to check*). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling three times and it still won't work. :) I NEED to play Eternal Lands, so please help!

For the ATI people, try to play with your ATI settings, especially the OpenGL settings. Chose speed over quality. By default, they don't really work well.

Soldus, that is a laptop, right? If so, is it using a Mobile pentium CPU?

set it all to full speed, if it increased my performance at all, it is not really noticeable.

yes, it's a laptop, no, it's the old normal pentium 4 with 533 fsb and 512Kb L2Cache

I had some major performance issues running EL 1.1.2 on my HP laptop with Intel graphics... those might not be the perfect EL station

(actually, it is not my laptop, it is from where I work. Hush, before my boss notices!)

Yes, that's the problem.

The new client uses the CPU more to free the GPU. Unfortunately, P4 non mobile laptops are not meant for games. The CPU draws too much power, overheats, then throttles down.

The error log should appear here: ~/.elc/error_log.txt

That's what I suggested in my initial post :D

It works pretty good on my machine with adjusted perspective, but my wife's machine is a bit less powerfull and she must play the new version in isometric view to get a reasonable FPS. The old client worked well for her in perspective mode. And i've an old P3 667 Mhz too, with which I could play the old version, but which is too slow to be able to play the new version at all.

Can you plz confirm if the cause is indeed the far plane distance and if it has changed since 1.1.2? If so, would you consider making this setting configurable in the options screen? ;)

Thanks,

DrCrusher.

*present*

I have the same problem with fps.

At first the game was really laggy just about all the time/everywhere.

Now i changed perspective (at 0.07 now) and use isometric view like DrCrusher suggested in his post. My fps is back to normal now, so not really a big deal anymore i guess (thanks DrC! :omg: ) but it was still kind of annoying trying to hunt down teh new little critters.

I do still however get a fps 'jump' coming out of console; goes from 3 to 30.

What was your perspective view before? Of course if you use high perspective and you tilt the camera horizontally you'll get very few fps, becuase it's rendering a ton more objects, you simply can't play like that..it's more for looking around.

Well, even with default settings (downloaded the entire game again) I had very low fps rate.

In the previous version I had perspective set quite high  without any problems at all, seems odd that it would make such a big difference.

Not complaining though, I don't have to use poor man or disable shadows or whatever now with isometric view, it's all good again :)

this would have been better as a seperate thread (since it's not update specific), and would have stood out better. but I'll do it here anyway.

if you have concerns about DNS, open up your el.ini (for a default windows install it'll be "C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands\el.ini") in notepad or whatever.

change the server address to "62.93.225.26" (current address of the server).

this will bypass the DNS lookup... however if the server address does change in the future, it will break again

if you just make a copy of the server address line without the # to keep the current one, you can change back later

if you still cannot connect to the server, it may be a firewall issue. you will need to allow outbound connections to port 2000. how you do that depends on your firewall

(and can some forum mod split these two posts out to a new thread?)

I did that, but it still doesn't work, and it's not my firewall, because I've tried turning it off and it didn't work.

This is what is in my el.ini file (until where I changed it and I will put the in bold).

Only directives that start with a # are taken in consideration

Anything else is treated as a comment

For the directives that accept a boolean value (on/off), 0 is off, 1 is on

!!!WARNING!!!

Make a backup of this file, before messing with it. In case it gets corrupted, the game might

not start at all, etc.

Dunno if this should make any real difference or not, but shouldn't that be two different lines?

Try it as:

#server_address = 62.93.225.26
#server_port = 2000

Hi, i got a big problem with the game first i played the new update like 10 min and nothing was wrong, than i was in MM cave harvesting for silver ore and my game starts flickering and resync server... and stuff.

Now its not only the cave its everywhere and if i logon to the game he directly starts to resync server... crap and than the game gets stuck, and than like 10sec and my monitor gets off like in standby stand (the light gets orange) :/

But i had 3 times that my videocard gets off like it doesnt exist anymore :/ than i got windows xp on 16 colors :/ till i restart.

I never had problems with this game till this new update :/ i realy think this update is nice and verry nice done but somehow its a problm for my comp:/.

I did install new drivers again...nothing happend. :/ and yesterday evening i uninstald windows xp and installed windows 2000 sp4 but no effect.

My Comp specs are:

Intel P4 3000 Ghz

1024 ddram

Asus Motherboard (1 month old)

Ati RADEON 9550 se 256MB

9 months old monitor 17 Inch

Broadband Internet.

So i realy dont understand why this game of 21mb cant be played on this one :/

So anyone/Mods now a good answer for this!??? i realy wanne play again!

It doesn't have the "not connect to internet or you DNS server is down" anymore, but I still can't get connected to the server, unless it's down now.

Here is my error log:

Log started at 2006-02-10 17:59:38

Error: Can't open file "./textures/fontv.bmp"

Error: Can't open file "quest.log"

Downloading http://www.eternal-lands.com/updates/files.lst from www.eternal-lands.com

Error: Can't open file "commands.lst"

Downloading http://www.eternal-lands.com/updates/files.lst from www.eternal-lands.com

Client closed

And I know it isn't my firewall cause I turned it off and tried it.

Ok... Fontv.bmp - shouldn't be causing you problems, but if you want to remove that line from your error log, go to the folder that's missing fontv, and copy one of the other font bmp files there.

Quest.log - create a blank text file (Use a text editor like Notepad), and save it as "quest.log" in your EL directory.

Commands.lst - open a blank text file (like above), then copy stuff from here. Paste to the blank text file, and save it as "commands.lst" in your EL directory. (I got this solution from http://www.eternal-lands.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=21899)

See if this helps?

It can load Quest.log, even though I saved it as quest O_o, but commands.lst still won't work and I tried saving as both commands.lst and commands. So, I still can't get on the server, but I think I'm getting closer.
