Gritch Report post Posted August 22, 2007 Hello, My dutch guildies can't access to the el website; no one from Holland seems to be able to connect the el websites. EL site is the only one affected by this connection issue. Even other-life seems ok (except image from the el site). Could anyone do anything to resolve this problem, please. I know many guys there who want to play as soon as possible. Thanks for them The Gritch
The_Piper Report post Posted August 22, 2007 I doubt that, i see at least 2 dutch players online right now. Maybe its a problem with your ISP and/or the ISP your guildies use? Piper
DrCrusher Report post Posted August 23, 2007 I doubt that, i see at least 2 dutch players online right now. Maybe its a problem with your ISP and/or the ISP your guildies use? Piper There has indeed been a problem for about 4 days connecting to the EL website from the Netherlands, at least for ppl connected to some ISP's. Note that connecting to the game server / playing the game worked. From the little info I have there seemed to be a problem with the entire network range in which the EL webserver is hosted being blocked or some routing problem, possibly at the ams-ix (Amsterdam Internet Exchange). The problem seems to be solved now, so I can post this reply DrCrusher

Grum Report post Posted August 23, 2007 Well, it's not a nationwide problem, I've had no trouble connecting from NL.
Walt-Her Report post Posted August 23, 2007 Thanks, the problem have been solved. It was like the IP range, in which the el-website is inalso< was blocked due to an abuse issue by the Dutch ISP xs4all. After a phonecall today they looked into it and made the el-webserver accessable again. Thanks for checking into the forum for me Gritch and to the ppl who were thinking about a possible solution Grtz. Walt_Her
LabRat Report post Posted August 23, 2007 Maybe you should all change your DNS servers to the ones run by opendns - www.opendns.com - a free and incredibly fast domain name provider that has a number of useful side effects, for example telling you when you are about to go to a phishing site for example
Walt-Her Report post Posted August 23, 2007 (edited) Maybe you should all change your DNS servers to the ones run by opendns - www.opendns.com - a free and incredibly fast domain name provider that has a number of useful side effects, for example telling you when you are about to go to a phishing site for example wouldn't work labrat, why do i know ? because i run my own dns with opendns rootfiles ) in this case a who iprange was blocked by the network-administrator so no traffic what so ever was going in/out to that range. DrCrusher Report post Posted August 23, 2007 Maybe you should all change your DNS servers to the ones run by opendns - www.opendns.com - a free and incredibly fast domain name provider that has a number of useful side effects, for example telling you when you are about to go to a phishing site for example In this case DNS had nothing to do with the connection problem. The problem was not that the name of the EL website couldn't be resolved, the problem was that all traffic to the EL website was blocked. Furthermore I believe opendns is a threat in itself. It breaks several important Internet standards and protocols which result in unexpected behavior and prevent the possibility to debug/solve certain problems. But let's not get off topic here, we don't want to start a flame in this thread
Entropy Report post Posted August 23, 2007 So what exactly was the problem? Was there some child porn on a machine in the same IP range with us? Or severe spam? Why didn't they block just that IP?
DrCrusher Report post Posted August 24, 2007 So what exactly was the problem? Was there some child porn on a machine in the same IP range with us? Or severe spam? Why didn't they block just that IP? I'm sorry, I don't have any more information about the situation. Maybe Walt-Her has? I can however say that the ISP involved (XS4ALL) is the best ISP in the Netherlands. They are technically very knowledgeable and are actively fighting for everybody's rights such as privacy and anti-censorship. They must have had a very good reason to block the IP-range.
