well, Mr Bob Lynn isn't officially known by that name, it's just something some of the players call him... but still, it'd be interesting

I suppose the possible problem is people who think that a name means it's a player... and all the problems that can cause

This is a nice idea -- named spawns. Adds some individuality to selected creatures, could be used to add 'npc' population with human(oid) spawns ("Mrs Miggins spawns in the pie shop").

Downsides or exploits? Not many, not too serious:

  • May confuse to newer players?
  • Tracking down a creature from a named spawn would be easier.

Non-PK'able Bob? Bad idea, sorry.

So Bob can't be attacked, but is free to attack (low level) characters? Lots of newbie death bags littering the street.

Bob is the danger in PortLand for low level characters, and that more able fighters can keep them safe is a postive effect.

lol, I don't think all spawns or any other than bob should get custom names thats just silly. Bob is a personality in Portland, I belive he is even refered to in a quest as Bob.... I certainly havent heard anyone refer to him as anything other that Bob the Gob... he is Bob the Gob

I think giving him an official label with the name we all know him as would be a nice touch more than anything of any seriousness...

non-pkable... baaad idea!

If we name him as bob the gob then he should be like wandering fool in that when he dies he walks back to PL from the underworld but cannot attack until he reaches PL (nor can he be attacked). That way he will get stronger and a gob for us all to watch out for. Of course he still needs to obey mm and def lvl ignore...

I personally don't think he should be given a name, because it is the community giving him the name, and everyone knowing about it without there being any indication of his name, that is special. If he is given the name visibly, then he ceases to be part of the community and just becomes a specialised object of the game.

I don't think it's good idea to give any certain monster a name. Names are reserved for players. If you call Portland goblin Bob, another player will want to name Tirnym chimeran Jennifer, etc.

We would finish killing Adams, Bobs, Jennifers, Suzannas, etc.

I don't like the idea because I don't call him Bob the Gob. For that matter, I've only heard a few people call him that.

Saying "we all know him as..." is totally not an accurate assessment. (For that matter, I don't even like the name, it doesn't even fit in a medieval theme imo).

"Bob" is a medieval short form of Robert, and perfectly suited for medieval themes.

I agree, the nickname Bob the Gob is just a nickname used by some people. I don't use it at all.

It is not fitting to the theme and it is just a goblin, nothing special about it.

Well that doesn't really matter because enough people do that it is considered "common knowledge".

Errr... and Pineapplebob the Grue Hunter fits the theme better??

There is something special about Bob, and that is he is more than just another anonymous goblin in the game. He almost has a personality because people tell stories about him. He was given a name because he is special. He is the only gobin in Portland and has a special role in being unqiue like that. He is part of what builds community into this game.

I remember my first experience of Bob. Walking through Portland having done it a couple of times before, and there he was. I knew to avoid him and still I got splatted. It was funny and friendly to talk about it with people because they understood. Recently I've been chatting to another friend who was harvesting at the holy apple and didn't know any better and got splatted by Bob. We joked together about these tales. The fact that he has a name, adds some personality to the situation. It wouldn't be as much fun and as friendly if it was just another goblin of half a dozen say on MM or whereever.

I personally don't like the idea of giving him a different title because he doesn't need it. He is known as Bob by enough people to not make it matter and as I said, he is part of the community because of it. You learn of his name by being involved in the community, not by seeing his name above him.

Can't it be like keeping his name, but when eyeball-kliking him, you could have:

You see a Gob, by the name of Bob. or smth like that

Can't say I recall saying that name was appropriate either

We all have newb stories about him, whether it be trying to harvest cactus and running from him or trying to harvest fruit, or just wandering around exploring...

The name Bob isn't what makes him special and part of the community. It's the fact of his existence, the point that we all have stories revolving around him since the beginning of EL almost, years before somebody decided to plant some ordinary name on him. He was just as popular and famous then as he is now.

I think the name kinda ruins the mystique, personally. *shrugs*

Not the name that makes him special, but vice versa. He has the name because he is famous. It's much easier to talk about hima as Bob than as "the PL gob". That would be too inpersonal. We can talk about "the CM fluffy" because it has no stories and nothing to do with the community. It is just another monster to train on.

Actually I never think about him as a "Bob" "John" "Gil" or any other name. This is just a gobling that happens to spawn in Portland and kill lots of newcomers. I'm strongly against giving any monsters any name.
