Raz Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Simple really my old Dell is about to die - and looking for some advice on any 'new' laptop that people have that works with EL. Not looking to go mad and buy a 'gaming' laptop.. Any ideas?
groomsh Report post Posted February 5, 2009 I'd avoid notebooks with ATI Mobility Radeon HDxxxx video card ... Can't get shadows to work on it (even with up to date drivers)
Entropy Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Pretty much any laptop will work with EL, but the question is: How much are you willing to spend?
Raz Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Pretty much any laptop will work with EL, but the question is: How much are you willing to spend? Just had delivered a Dell 1525 for someone else - I'll try it tonight http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products...;l=en&s=dhs But just seen the new http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products...;l=en&s=dhs Basically £400-£500 but would rather splash out on something that is known to be working. (I know integrated graphics cards are bad news)

Entropy Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Personally, if the most important factor were to play 3d games, I'd get something with an Nvidia card.
SolarStar Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Yes spend gc on a good graphic card but get one with linux (you pay extra for the windows licence)

korrode Report post Posted February 6, 2009 (edited) Why are you boycotting intel? ;o I boycott them because if they had their way, you'd pay at least 3 times what you do now for their CPU's. ...not to mention: their near-blackmailing of OEMs to use their chips exclusively their untrue slander about the laptops for the 'One Laptop per Child initiative' and attempt to have their dearer products used instead their feature blocking in Skype simply if you don't have an Intel CPU (nothing to do with CPU features or performance) their bias benchmarking software ...there's more but that's enough reasons anyways Edited February 6, 2009 by Korrode

Entropy Report post Posted February 7, 2009 I am eyeing some netbook/notebook hybrid from Acer, it has an Atom CPU but an Nvidia card, and 10" lcd. Although I am not going to buy anything new soon, since I just got a netbook in September.
Raz Report post Posted February 7, 2009 I was more after a laptop that is known to work with EL... Last thing i want to do is buy one and it not work
korrode Report post Posted February 7, 2009 Well, all you need to ask and feel 'guaranteed', is what video chips that laptops use work with EL. That's all that dictates the compatibility.
