    The way you say this makes me think that your interest it using it for training... Witch is not its intention... Radu does not like when people use aspects of the game in ways that they were not intended, and for good reason. Anyway, doing it right would take more then you think, it's not just cut and past (to my understanding) with map making and then the programing... But I have not done much with this, it might turn out to be easyer then I'm thinking it will be Yes, I was interested in using it for training and for betting. "The ways that they were not intended" you say? An arena where you bet on your ability to fight has the requirement of you betting. One thing that I notice Radu does not like is combat between players or combat between a player and a monster without risk. Betting a platinum coin is a risk. Breakage is a risk. Additional gc for entering would be a cost which would be harder to implement, but would certainly cover the costs of fun which Radu seems to like. I must admit that I have not designed maps myself, although I have looked at the editor a few times. Most of my knowledge is from reading way too many posts on EL forums since 2006. For reference, 1,546 posts and that is only how many posts I have made as opposed to how much I have actually read. I was once interested in making a custom map for my guild, but frankly a person would have to love wasting money or ask for donation in order to pay the massive fees for implementing a guild map and occasional adjustments. I have only made maps for other RPG's (which was easy in them).
  2. PKarrows recipe: is it worth it?

    I heard that wearing a harvester medallion reduces or stops tool breaks. The medallion only breaks in combat, acid rain and while harvesting, I believe. So, except for the risk to a arrow/bolt head mold, it is worth it for the mixer to make them, but not worth it for a player to supply the other player with all ingreds. Hmmm....I wonder if supplying a majority of the ingreds would work for compensation with the xp being the rest of the compensation. I guess I will ask Jeff if he wants to try to strike a deal like that.

    Solarstar mentioned training arrows in an instance and she also mentioned engineering items. That gave me the idea of using training arrows to lure mobs over poison caltrops. I personally think that anyone using that combo could most definitely help an invance. Not that poison caltrop damage stacks and can reach 24 damage per poison tick on a red dragon for someone as low in engineering as I am.

    So....no xp in an arena......makes it all a macho pk thing with no bonus else than ego and platinum coins. Eh. Sounds like that would only cater to a few folk's desires and I know I would not be interested in it at that point. With xp, I would be interested, but not without xp.

    I am thinking you mean stacking poison caltrop damage. Luring mobs over those with a bow would make sense, I guess. There is one and only one reason I can think of for training arrows in an instance/invance/invasion. The arrows could be used to lure mobs or make them flee. No comment on if people will respect you any for using them for that, but in the right situation it could save a rosto.

    That is not quite true. An EL hour is about 61 real life minutes. Thus within about 14 days you cycle through the whole of EL time, if you log in at precisely the same time every real life day. I did know or notice at first, but it's a very clever scheme imho and should not be changed - as it solves the issue you see in an elegant way IMHO. And a random time, but fixed once started for each player would make it somewhat a real quest even when people have a storybook which tells most of the clues. Ah. I did not notice tha hours were actually 61 minutes. Well then....24.0*60.0/61.0 = 23.606557377049182 EL hours in a day. That means an offset of (24.0*60.0/61.0 -23)*61 37.0 EL minutes per real life day. Thanks for the enlightenment.

    45 minute windows. 6 hours days. 8 time slots for completion. Possible completion time is 1 day per unspecified time given to 7 days or never. Why 1 day to 7 days to never? Because some people do not have the luxury of folk like me to play for aprox 6 hours a day. For those that only have a 1-2 hour time window during a workday, the chances of finishing the task is not too likely. Some of those folk do not have the option of playing on the weekends either. They would then have to rely on server restarts or downtimes in order to have the time shift or rely on days off. The hours of available play time that people may have to work with is a good reason to not have the times be random. It would be quite frustrating to try day after day and not be able to finish. Time based quests might be more doable for people with limited playtimes if EL had 5 hour days, but that does not seem very likely to happen. We will most likely always have 6 hour days, so a person with limited playtimes during a set time of their real life day will most likely always be playing EL during the same EL time (with the exception of server downtime).

    If guildmaps can't have non-drop pk areas then it will have to be an official location then....or the only safe gear would be non-drop gear. JoeButler, were you in a drop map or a non-drop map when the platinum coins dropped?

    Indeed on the general pk maps, but I was not sure if Radu would be able to turn on/off the dropping of platinum coins per map. Gold coins used to drop on any map before though and platinum coins are only used by the silly, so I don't think it would be a bad thing to have platinum coins drop outside of the tavern. I know there is a certain difficulty in anything that requires additional programming, which is why I was trying to make sure that 0-1 changes would be required outside of a special map design. If platinum coins currently drop (I know gold coins no longer drop, but I never heard if platinum coins would), a player with map editor skills and $ to blow could implement the pk betting tavern on a guild/personal map using the suggestions I have posted.

    Ever play a role playing game at a table with actual people? If you have, you may have noticed the game master calculating how many critters of what level he needs to have in the encounters or making some have good/bad luck.

    Do you have your original chat logs from when you played before? There may be clues as to what the password was in there. Did you ever change your password during the time you played? If so, you might have accidently done the command wrong and said it in local chat. What JoeButler said: "Try all passwords you usually use, and anything you were interested at the time about, remembering what numbers you were likely to use and trying with lower case and capitial variations." Good luck on not having to send Radu money for a password reset.

    agreed, healing and harming in auggies is great help, not every one chooses the path of a warrior, most mix, range, summon cast etc. it seems we need to prevent invances from becoming elitist to the cream of the warrior world, besides thats what instances are for no? Agreed. Invances are a place to fight where you can actually restock, unlike instances. The mages and archers will usually need to restock more than the fighters will. If archers and mages can't wear low emu gear, they will have to restock more and will be of less use. Good armor is no guaranty that a person will be of use. Someone with bad fighting attributes and great armor can still be killed by over half of the invance monsters. Lets not forget summoners either. I can't tell you how many times a summoner has saved my butt in an invance. Low emu armor means more summons. A skilled summoner could probably save your butt with simple brown rabbits (it is a timing thing).

    Wait....were platinum coins 100gc or 1,000gc or 10,000 gc for the price in taverns? I think 1,000gc, but it has been quite a while. Those bets would be 1kgc worth to 50kgc worth if it is 1kgc value. That is alot of money to bet, I think. There might not be a need for an additional gc fee for the bet. You don't get the full purchase price back when you cash them out. If you make platinum coins always drop in arenas (or maybe everywhere), no other programming would be necessary. If you make an arena in a different room, but visible from outside and use a planinum coin on a box or something to enter it, the only thing you would need to worry about is invisible players (which you can check for with truesight pots before going in). That I know of, you can turn on and off magic and summoning for map regions. That sounds quite doable.

    Until you remove hellspawn, try harvesting flowers in Arius. There are a number of 1+gc flowers there and the storage is outside. Alot of potion makers will buy those flowers to make extracts and such. Some of them are used in creature food. 0 map changes required. Pandas and such are available for meat and bones. Bones sell for over 2gc to those who buy frequently.

    I know I run out of storage slots from time to time and so do some of my higher level guildmates. If rings could be equipped, that would be an interesting addition, but currently there is no such option. I always miss the picture of a dude in gear or picture of the gear arranged as it would be if worn whenever I look at the equipment slots. I don't really think this should be something that has to be bought. I think rings with enchantments that help you (besides one shots) and that little equipment layout picture would just be a natural progression for the game. Both of those are everywhere but in EL, it seems.

    I like to use mirror cape with MoL and SoP. I have the evanescence perk. I have had some times with this combo where I have had 4 chims, a yeti and a frost troll on me and I managed to stay in combat for over 4 minutes like that. Just evanescence and mirror skin gives you a good chance of not getting damage. The other two give you a good chance of getting a heal when you are hit. My toughness honestly sucks. I need more phys. My coordination is maxed. I am in the 100-120 bracket. The mobs that I mentioned were in a 120 cap SKF invasion. The evanescence perk helped me before I got myself a mirror cloak too, I think, by saving me a bit of healing requirements. The chance of MoL/SoP/evanescense/mirror going off when you have all of them is about 48% (for at least one of them going off), if my calculations and memory are right. I love bonus stacking. If you want cyclops, EP is great. Not too many people train there. I have not seen anyone there the last few times I went for cyclops haider daily. Bring MtE and dis rings since they hit a bit hard. The evanescence will help you survive if they team up on you. I know I am not a person that many people want fighting advice from, but at least I have had the perk and I am talking from experience. I hope this helps some.

    Hmmm....spawn some non-boss critters when one of the toughest monsters get killed. Interesting idea. Such an idea could be done for any invance bracket, I think. It might confuse the #ii results a little, but giants make that confusing with their summons anyways (for the brackets that have giants). Hopefully, that is when Radu adds new monsters when he decides that invances are too easy, since adding it to the main wave will only screw over the folk that are not built specifically for combat. Well, then or during a 2nd+ wave.

    Yes, I was referring to uses for the multiple layers in the GIF images. Displaying a different layer for a different compass direction or shifting the layers to come up with a cheap 2.5D effect are uses that I can imagine for those layers. I do not know if using the different layers of the GIF would be easier or harder than using multiple image files.

    What color depth do you have for the PNG? That file size seems a bit high for PNG, so I am thinking you are using true-color. Try 256 color indexed PNG's if you use PNG. JPEG files and GIF often encode images with alot of color changes better than PNG files do. With GIF, you have an added bonus of being able to store multiple layers which could give you storage of 2.5D images in one single file as opposed to multiple. 2.5D could be done by either having an image for each of the 8 compass directions (and perhaps top down) or by having multiple levels (so you can shift the layers based on what direction you are faced) or a height map so you can put in the hills/houses or whatever.

    After you manage to read the height map from the map files, you will need to take care of walking paths. If you write your own, it may be trouble, but maybe a google for "path finding algorithm" might help. You might be able to look at some bot code or the EL client code to find something you can copy and modify. I suggest you ask permission and give credit where due and consider what changes it might make to client licensing requirements (GPL, EL's custom license, etc). Sorry to scare you with licensing crap....just a habbit. There is a maximum number of steps that the near-walk command can do. I don't remember if it is 6 or 10 or what. You will want to consider that and perhaps mark points for your client to walk through if you write your own code. Other people's code may already have this. You may also want to consider a "stall" check to see if your character is still walking when it is supposed to be and resume after a short period.

    Ah. You live. I hope life is well and that you are overcoming some stuff that was holding you back (intentional vagueness due to this being public). Don't expect EL (as we know it) on anything mobile for at least 6-12 months. The mere possibility of such a thing relies on switching the graphics handling and an outside project's (SDL's) progress. Before SDL releases SDL2.0, we have no prayer of a mobile EL that has close to the graphics ability that we are used to. For EL clients with low graphics, there are 2 current projects by folks and 1 of them is browser based with javascript. I have no clue on the progress of either one.
