Hi,

 

I just downloaded the game and installed it, but whenever I try to run it it crashed on the part where it says initializing open GL extentions.

 

This ever happen to anyone else?

Update your graphics drivers. Oh, and posting some specs and the error log might also help.

Having the same problems with my windows vista...

Also the same error-log. I have installed the newest drivers, but it doesn't work either...

I get the same. Till a few weeks ago I could log into the game fine. Today I wanted to return after a break and I couldnt get into the game anymore. I completely uninstalled and downloaded it again. Installed the game and got the same log error as stated above.

 

I changed the data.dir from d:....... to c:Program Files\Eternal Lands\

 

Now I get the following message

My laptop is MEDION 96640

using vista

nvidia GeForce9300M G ( but already checked drivers and it says that the current one is the right one)

 

After trying for hours and looking at all the different posts, I'm about to give up.

Did you try installing using the default install directories?(as in, don't change any of that stuff yourself). See if it works then.

Are you using the latest NVIDIA drivers or are you using drivers provided by Medion?

 

You could also try to disable all the graphic features: ctrl+o at the login screen opens the option window.

Disable all options in the last four tabs and enable 'poor man'. If it helps, you can enable the options again,

step by step, and see which one's causing the crash.

I used the default settings, I dont know why it says at first that data.dir is in D when it actually installs the game by default in C:program files\eternal lands

 

I went to the el.exe file and copied the path from there,

C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands

 

the only difference from the changes I did before is the backslash at the end, so now it gives the following error log:

About the drivers I cant remember if I updated them or if its the original one, but when I use driver agent, it doesnt give me a better one. When I open the nvidia files it says : winvista and then 177.41.

So the client isn't crashing but you can't connect to the server? Do you have any virus scanners/firewalls running?

Maybe they're blocking port 2000 (that's where the main server is running). Another possibility is that your ISP is blocking the port.

Nope, it seems my trial of zone-alarm had ended yesterday and windows firewall was still disabled, so my pc was unprotected (stupid me).

 

So now I put up windows firewall again, and I will add port 2000 if you give me the name and protocol I have to enter, but I doubt it will be the issue since my pc was unprotected before.

 

Edit : virus scanner is AVG 8.00

Ok, lets then see if your problem is connecting to port 2000..

 

Open a dos box

(Start button, "execute", then type "cmd.exe" and press Enter key)

 

In the dos box type

 

telnet the-green-leaf.de 2000

 

Do you get some text lines response or nothing?

 

If nothing, your problem is still port 2000.

 

So maybe your ISP, your router, something else is blocking port 2000 and thats the problem, why you cant connect to the game server to play.

I'll try to translate what it says:

telnet isnt recognised as an internal or external command, program or batchfile

Arg.. a windows without a telnet client, that would have been such a nice and easy test to find out if port 2000 is your problem or not...

 

If you still want to test, try to download and install putty, that is a telnet client and they even have a version for Vista:

I had a look at it and I'm not comfortable installing stuff I dont understand much off, anyway, I tried to log to pk server, which is port 2001 and it didnt work as well, I got the same problems.

Apparantly it seems I'm changing the wrong el.ini file

 

I changed the one in my users file : main while there is still an el.ini file in c:\program files\eternal lands (thanks oromis).

 

There it still gives the wrong data-dir path, BUT it doesnt allow me to change it.

Don't change the one in C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands, that wouldn't change anything.

Also, don't change the port number in el.ini, that doesn't work anymore; instead, change the shortcut to start the program to

"C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands\el.exe" test

or

"C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands\el.exe" pk

to see if you can connect to the test (2001) or PK (2002) server.

(Right-click on the shortcut > Properties > Target.)

You'll see, in the end it will be something stupid, but you can look for it for hours. Anyway, thank you all for your patience and trying to solve it.

The one in C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands is only used to create the one in your users directory when that one doesn't exist yet, so it doesn't matter what is in C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands\el.ini after your first try to launch EL.

 

I'm not sure what the problem is...

Do you have a file servers.lst in C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands?

Does it contain a line

?

btw, the one that started this post had the same error log and message on his login sreen, so that is why I posted here instead of a new thread

ok did everything theryndan and everyone else said, so thanks for the fixes and for the patience.

 

I still couldnt get in, even when I added the game and port to my windows firewall to allow it.

 

When my husband got home he said to turn all firewalls completely off, and after that I could log in, but I obviously cant hold this situation, so I have to figure out tomorrow how to get in with the firewall up and running. But for now I'm in.
