Statistics

Recommended Posts

Posted here rather than in the public forums since the statistics may be considered 'restricted'?

It would be useful to have more statistics on the population, when considering new ideas...

When considering and working through ideas for the game, things can get rather vague when considering the impact on the population, in that is not (afaik) any published statistics on character attributes.

The nearest thing being Mihaim/Learner's 'Top Players' listing for skills -- which only shows the high extreme of the distribution of levels. Extremes of any distribution, while interesting in their own right, don't tell you much about the whole population.

What I would like to see, at least, would be some histograms for the various character attributes (including cross attributes and nexus) and skills. The shape of the distributions can be more informative than just the limits and means.

Since attributes are discrete values, with limited range (though theoretically open ended), compiling such histograms should be a simple case of iterating over the character database. Since they are concerned with statistical distributions, the analysis would only need to be run occasionally, as and when the population could have changed in some way. Unfair weighting by short-lived or spam characters could be reduced by excluding those below some OA threashold (resets should be rare enough not to affect things too much -- though again, we don't really know).

There are also plenty of other statistics which could be collected and considered -- correlations, perk-popularity, wealth, character online frequencies and durations (afk considerations).

Some of these may already be being collected; if they are, it would be useful to see what the game population is like.

To me this seems quite important, and obviously a valid suggestion.

There is a need (especially with economy) to be able to get cash levels that are floating around to even begin addressing the economy situation.

Yes this would be something nice to have.

I know that ent already has some statistics being collected on the server for the high end items, so I'm sure it's possible to do it for attributes and other things.

yes, it would be interesting to see the distribution of items and other stuff...

statistics can tell a lot of stuff.

hmm, what one could do is gather the statistics based on the latest server backup, and run in on a diffrent machine. that way one get a fairly recent image of things, and one do not have to load the server down with extra tasks...
