Need some serious help regarding transfering elm files

Recommended Posts

Guest Trojan_Knight

As the title says, I'm having some issues emailing a few elm files that I have created. What I have tried so far (please read below)

Saved my edit as blah blah.elm. Then I have pulled the original elm from the maps folder, renamed it Guild_etc.elm and set it on my desktop.. Then made the version I was working on, named it the original name guildmap_etc.elm.. for example. Attached it to email, sent to myself. Erased version in the map file. And guess what? Original map resides? Wtf?

Another thing I have done is tried to save from the map program, directly to my desktop. This equals the map program crashing, without saving.

I have tried copy and paste. To only not have a paste option when trying to paste onto my desktop.

I have tried to save my entire EL Programs file to a cd. With the idea, that I could upload it to a dif computer that is running XP. To only discover that anything I have created in the map program, to not be included.

I have tried finding the file I named the elm, that was not the original name, and file is not found. Though when the map program is running or opened, its there.

The only time this works, on test server, is when I over write the original copy in the map program with the update that I have done. Then, only I can see it. If I go to my email, add it as a attachment, it converts itself back to the original. I have proven this 3 times. Once to my client, once to roja (most likely since), one time i emailed it to myself.

I am running on window's vista. I do not know any other information you may need or etc. So if anyone can help that I have not spoken with, then please advise. I would greatly appreciate it, and so would a few other people.

Well to solve one of your problems...

The map you wish to save or open must be in the same directory or sub directory as your mapeditor program. Don't know why this is, but I noticed that as well.

The only directory any of the edited maps, or newly created maps are located, are in (c:) programs\Eternal Lands\Maps Editor while is running or open click on open maps directory. We would think that when saved, these edited or newly created maps would be in (c:) programs\Eternal Lands\Maps but they are not. Since on my pc anything EL related is in the (c:) directory. Like is on most players. However, for some odd reason(s), my pc/vista is not allowing the (c:)programs\eternal lands\maps directory to be updated or have newly update or created maps saved to it. Even when trying to save it manually to this maps folder, it will save while the maps editor is running, an be there every time I re open or re run the maps editor to load. But never any maps that i have created be in the (c:)programs\eternal lands\maps folder.

I know on my other lap top that was running window's XP none of these issues were present. I would make the ~LE~ map in the map editor. Save it as what ever name I wanted. And it would appear in the map's folder. Where from there I could send it to who ever I wanted with out any issues. So I feel as if this is more of a Vista issue, rather then a user issue. There has to be some way, to pull these maps from the map editor that I have created. And exactly what that is, I have no idea.

Roja and I tried for almost a hr last night, and I greatly appreciate her time and effort. And we ran in circles most of the time. We came up with one of two conclusions. 1) Is it possible that there is another "original" map somewhere lost on my pc that may have the exact same name? Since it is pulling a original copy while trying to send the overwritten copy as a attachment.. However, this doesn't answer the problem for ALL maps that I have created, which some are brand new and where never on game. 2) There must be a way to pull these files out of the map editor map directory. Since that is where they are saved to. But with vista, neither of us were able to figure it out.

I forgot to include.. Yesterday, I tried to save the entire EL programs folder to a cd to upload to a lap top that has XP.. That didn't work. One of my clients suggested to try a flash drive.. I figure, worse case senerio same result. So later today I'm gonna go buy a flash drive to see if anything promising occurs. I'll keep you posted. Because if this does by chance work, it could help anyone else that may run vista and wants to make map(s).

Ok, well, if you have Vista, things change a little, since Vista has a problem with writting files in places it doesn't like.

What I am suggesting is to copy all the EL files in /my documents/ and try the map editor from there.

Ent, Thanks.. I tried using the documents area of my pc and this is the conclusion. And leaves me with a question.. But first the conclusions.

1) Any maps I created, were not transfered over. Meaning, anything and everything I have done, poof, not present.

2) However, if I create a map in the editor, from the document directory, the file IS located in the maps folder located in the documents directory. I did a brief test, made a dot, named it "etc" and poof, it appears. Emailed myself and poof also present.

3) This leaves one conclusion to anyone running Vista.. You MUST HAVE your EL program files ran from Documents IF you want to be able to transfer any maps you create and email / send them to anyone.

Now for my question.. Would it be a good idea to run the game, from documents? I don't see it causing any possible issues.. Just a longer directory name may be all? But then again, I'm not a pr0 computer person like you :pickaxe: Cuz honestly i would have never thought of this lolz.

Either way I'm going to have to erase ALL my EL stuff or start over in documents. Cuz anything currently in C:\programs\eternal lands\maps that i have created is not present regardless unless like stated in my above posts from c:\programs\eternal lands\map editor\map directory. Which makes any and all maps there are useless at this point. And I see no reason to have double the same files in my pc if not needed. Since I did "copy" from (c:) programs directly into (paste) documents then tested in the idea that worse case senerio i still have copies in proper location (that being c:\programs\eternal lands)

I may have to start over.. But shit happens sometimes, and usually it happens to me lolz. Anyways, thanks.. Cuz I thought for sure my map making carreer was over lolz. Only cuz I'm not willing to go buy XP or a new lappy, just to make maps, no offense. :)

edit: tried the flash drive I baught. Got it for 10 bucks.. :P Nice one! lolz.. Anyways, the results from the flash drive are identical as to CD, so that's not a option either.. Only thing that works is what I stated in the above on this post.

I'd do some searches online about that vista problem if I were you...that's insanely stupid of them but there's got to be a way to get around it.

I've already searched to the best of my ability.. As we probally all know from my lack of being able to find suggestions already made. My searching abilities pretty much suck unless it includes hot sexy latina's with porn options lolz. Anyways, didn't find anything regarding this matter when I googled :pickaxe:

I'm using EL map editor under my 64b Vista (and also used it under 32b), i have EL installed on a partition other than C:, (also ntfs parition) and everything runs well. No problems with saving/loading elm files, so that sentence above doesnt work for all Vista users... I posted the files on the guild forums and sent via mail -- no problems. I dont have to use 'run as administrator' option while opening the editor. I'm working on an administrator accout with 'user control' option disabled (annoying thingy).

Hmm, let me think what I'm doing\did. I'm on admin account, have 1 user account, but never use it (guest) if that counts as one lolz. Have had user control off for almost a year now probally. C:programs\blabblahblab didnt work for myself. After the above statment was made by me. I reset my lappy. Cuz well, couldn't find any way to possibly find "a lost" file if there was one after hours of wasted time searching and etc. And it was inedvidable that those elms that i made were not going to be able to be sent out. So I figured "I'll fix any possiblity of anything being lost" and fix other possible issues at the same time that had nothing to do with this, just old stuff I've meant to earse but just to lazy to lolz = reset. Cuz if i have to start all over again (after this current time), I'll just stop making maps period. I saved all my work related stuff onto my new flash drive w00t lolz prior to set back. I redownloaded EL after that was done. Because I thought possibly "maybe I had a bad copy of EL". Results showed same results regardless. Erased EL again. Redownloaded again, same thing 3rd time. Erased EL again, downloaded and saved into Documents, everything works perfectly fine now and how it is suppose to.. Yeah, that thing does getting annoying all the time that pops up and bs lolz. When I first got this lappy a lil over a yr ago, I swore that thing was gonna break my clickers on my mouse lolz. Anyways, my point.. Your either saying your running off something other then C.. Or I'm lost lol.. Anyways, if so, then maybe instead of "having" to be in documents. Maybe instead it could be in anything other then directly C: itself? Because that would prove true between your and my expierence with this? Given that currently neither of us are running directly from C:\programs\EL etc. Or my smart moment has left me?
