Tanyia Report post Posted October 23, 2006 I have a new problem When playing EL on my laptop (with either the pre-compiled or compiled from CVS version), EL causes X to crash, and I have to manually reboot my computer with the power button to recover. At least, I think it's crashing X. What happens is that my screen will go to a black screen with the busy cursor icon, then flash off, then flash back to the black screen with the busy cursor. It will repeat this indefinately (or for at least 10 minutes, which is the longest time I've waited in the hope that it would recover itself). I've tested that it is actually EL doing this, and not another program. I have an Intel 852GM/855GM graphics card. My hard drive is 32 gigs, with 512 RAM. I'm running Ubuntu Dapper. The processor speed is somewhere in the range of 1.8-2 GHz. I generally get 2-10 FPS. EL works fine on Windows, and although it is slow, it does not crash my computer. Does anyone have suggestions as to what might be causing this? I've thought of overheating, but the game works fine in Windows. Plus, sometimes it happens after 2 hours, sometimes after 15 minutes. bluap Report post Posted October 23, 2006 (edited) Have you tried switching to one of the virtual terminals CTRL+ALT+F1 for example? If you get a login prompt, you can login and see whats going on. vytukas Report post Posted October 24, 2006 Taniya, I get the same crash under i915 graphics card, too. But it happens only when I leave the game running and open many programs, switch between workspaces very fast etc. If I switch EL to console mode, or minimize, I can do whatever I want, I don't remember it crashed. How does the game crash for you? On Windows, there are no workspaces which I switch fast with mouse wheel, but I think it still is a hardware problem, cause if I open many M$ Words etc while playing EL, video also locks up, and Windows reboots immediately as a result. And it is definitely not EL, try anotger GPU intensive game, like TORCS, especially try switching workspaces a lot while it is open, I'm pretty sure the same will happen. However, I see your FPS is low, so maybe you could use my advice in http://www.eternal-lands.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=29358 ? That is an improvement I did try to change the BIOS settings, but could not find anything relating to graphics cards. But, I'll keep looking into how to change that.
