Totems

Would require crafting skill and some knowledge of eles.

 

To make them you'd need animal parts, sticks and eles. The result would be like a staff, but with imbued magical properties based on the ingredients.

 

Depending on your level of crafting and amgical ability you could put more combinations of eles into the Totem (much like making a spell if I have this right) which would decide the overall task of the Totem. The animal parts would add other factors; snake skin might make the Totem poisonous in combat, bear skin might give a bonus to HP, etc... the eles would give the Totem a set number of 'charges' which would let the spell (determined by the eles used in the construction) be cast with no chance of failure until those charges run out, at which point the Totem breaks and you have to craft a new one.

 

I never used magic so some of the above suppositions about the mechanics of spells may be wrong, but the overall idea remains.

Well, what we plan to do is to rename the current crafting school Jewelry, and make the skill called "Crafting" into the skill where you make wooden, leather, bone items, etc..

For the record, the term "Totem" does not refer to a physical object. A Totem is an iconic spiritual entity.

 

You could use terms like "charm," "fetish," or perhaps "medicine bag."
