  1. Greetings, I have tried everything I can think of to make the new client as smooth as the old one was to no avail. The screen 'freezes' momentarily and movement is extremely jerky. You cannot imagine just how annoying this is. I have a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX with 768MB RAM on board and am using the latest driver (Forceware 158.22). I have tried all the available settings as follows: Image Settings - High Quality, Quality, Performance, High Performance (High Performance appears to deliver the best (smoothest) results) Antialiasing Settings - Application Controlled, Off, 2x, 2xQ, 4x (App Control appears to be the optimum setting) Anisotropic Filtering - Application Controlled, Off, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x (App Control appears to be the optimum setting) Screen Refresh - 60, 70, or 75 Hertz (75 appears to be the best) I have tried every resolution from 640 x 480 to 1600 x 1200 and both color depths. While the 1600 x 1200 x 32 appears to be the smoothest, even it is almost unbearably jerky. I have tried every in game setting from Poor Man to full Eye Candy, Shadows, Particles, you name it. I have set the max FPS everywhere from 0 (unrestricted) to 60 in increments of 5. When I initially log into the game, I get the following info (a typical login - one of many configurations I have tried). I am willing to try whatever setting combination you think may be beneficial. Thank you and have a great day!
  2. Folks, If you want me to alch up your essence requirements or bars (iron, steel, silver, gold, titanium, wolframite, or hydrogenium) while you enjoy other aspects of the adventure, just pm me in game. I have level 76 in alchemy and it is growing fast. I may get the other bar books too one day, who knows. You provide all ingredients and FPs. Any quantity is welcome - from 1 to 100,000,000 - it's all the same to me. You get everything back - including all enriched essences that may be made. I get the free alch experience and that is sufficient. I will stop whatever I may be doing at the time of your order and get right on it. Small orders (under 25K) are normally completed within 24 hours. Larger orders can be delivered incrementally or in full, as your needs dictate. Orders will be filled in a first come, first served manner. I have many satisfied customers and am looking forward to working with you in the future. Enjoy the adventure!
  3. New Client is Choppy and Jerky

Ok, that's very strange. Do you have a CRT or LCD screen? I could only think it would affect something if you have an LCD. However, you said in your first post that you tried that and it didn't work. Also, that should have no way of affecting your computer in that kinda of way, at all. It makes no sense. (Really weird). I'm sure that he must have adjusted something other than the monitor's refresh rate. If you have a CRT, you probably want to figure out how to get back to 75Hz as 60Hz will often cause you headaches. I agree, it is quite weird. I have LCDs. I rechecked my diagnostics matrix and did indeed test using the 60Hz refresh setting. When I asked my hubby if he had changed any other settings, he simply smiled and said "No, just the refresh rate." Sometimes technicians really annoy me, even if they are family. One of the primary reasons I switched from CRTs to LCDs was the nausea caused by low refresh rates.
  4. New Client is Choppy and Jerky

It ended up not being the video card at all, but my monitor refresh setting. My hubby looked at the configuration and did one of those "slap on the forehead" moves (from the you could have had a V8 commercials) and simply changed the monitor refresh rate from 75Hz to 60Hz and the problem was solved. I reset the video card to the default settings and everything works as it should, regardless of FPS setting. No more jerky movement regardless of what is going on in the screen or how much fluff (eye candy, etc) I have enabled. I have to hand it to the guy, once I can get him moving, he usually moves in the 'right' direction. ;-)
  5. I just downloaded the new client on my laptop and it worked fine. My new PC is another story though. EL will not start and I almost instantly get a MS Error Dialog box showing Eternal Lands Client Error. When I check the details, it shows the AppName - el.exe and the ModName - sdl.dll. I tried using the sdl.dll from the 1.3.3. client and it will not work with the 1.4.0 build. I tried downloading sdl.dll and get an entry point error in the dll, so obviously that is no good. I have also tried all the modified clients posted here without success. My PC info is: Processor - Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 @ 2.66GHz RAM - 4096MB Graphics Card(s) - Radeon 8800 GTX with 768MB RAM and a Ageia PhysX Processor Hard Drive Space - over 100GB free Version of EL - 1.4.0 OS - Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates and patches No error_log.txt is created in the EL directory Connection speed - 1.5MB Nothing else is running - no Norton, no firewall, no TSRs, nothing. Any assistance or advice you can offer would be appreciated. Playing EL on the laptop is a non-starter, as hubby normally has it with him.
  6. New Client is Choppy and Jerky

My CPU is the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 (quad processor) running at 2.66GHz. The highest usage I have ever seen on it was a whopping 8% when in PV at a crowded (and very noisy) storage. Normally it runs between 1-4% usage. I have the video configured now where the movement is almost satisfactory, so I am not going to worry about it anymore. When the movement starts affecting me, I will just do something else.
  7. Old Laptop Works, New PC Does Not [SOLVED]

Well the Radeon is the ATI brand, but an 8800GTX is definitely an Nvidia card. I'm guessing it was a simple mistake. I have always called them Radeons, but the boxes say Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX Superclocked. I used to run in SLI mode (dual cards), but found so little actually supports that, I had hubby remove one and I am thoroughly thrilled with the performance. I enjoy the new toy ;-) Thanks for all your assistance in getting this annoyance resolved. The little message that comes up on login says my card will support all future features of EL. Should be a hoot. Here woofie, woofie, woofie...
  8. Old Laptop Works, New PC Does Not [SOLVED]

Appreciate the thought provoking suggestions. The problem has been resolved. I tweaked the Nvidia Control Panel settings and now the client works. A bit 'slow' and jerky (<100FPS for some reason), but I can fix that tomorrow I imagine. Thanks again.
  9. Old Laptop Works, New PC Does Not [SOLVED]

Yes, both full screen and windowed. No go.
  10. Old Laptop Works, New PC Does Not [SOLVED]

I updated the drivers yesterday as well. Have tried everything I can think of, including completely deleting the old client (and the new one), rebooting, downloading the new client again, making all the ini changes to reduce the unknowns, checked every available video setting on the desktop and in the client. Nothing worked, but yes, I agree it appears to be video card related.

I downloaded and installed the latest DirectX yesterday.
  13. Old Laptop Works, New PC Does Not [SOLVED]

Windows is obviously looking for the dll file in the Eternal Lands directory, since it changes errors when I use an old (or different) one in that directory. The laptop and desktop are almost identical in reference to software loads. XP Pro SP2, Office 2003 Pro, and four games. Nothing else.
  14. Old Laptop Works, New PC Does Not [SOLVED]

I downloaded the client again and installed in onto a different hard drive (the boot drive vice an application drive). I get the same error as before. I disabled sound in the el.ini as well. No change. The only real difference in the laptop and desktop is the processor. The laptop has a dual processor and the desktop a quad processor. Naturally the desktop has newer, more powerful components, but I do not understand why one would work with no problem and the other not.
  15. Old Laptop Works, New PC Does Not [SOLVED]

I have disabled not only the sound, but special effects, and eye candy. It still does not start.
  16. I am having a similar problem. 17. Global advantages

My Thoughts on Possible Global Advantages [Prologue] The following suggestions should in no way be construed as criticisms or complaints. I dearly love Eternal Lands and will continue playing well into the future regardless if any of these suggestions are accepted and implemented or dismissed out of hand. [suggestions] 01) Make all potions stackable. Changing the emu to 5 per for currently non-stackable potions would be fine. 02) Implement a magic spell timer for spells currently ‘on’ icon. Something similar to the ‘cool down’ clock either on the spell cast icon itself or the shortcut icon. 03) Implement animal/monster training pits. For those of us that either cannot find a training partner or simply do not wish to train on PK maps, a map with monster training pits (having either a user-selectable animal/monster or with a set opponent) could be created on each continent. These pits could be multi-attack and have from 2-20 opponents but no drops of any kind. They would be strictly for training attack and defense skills. An entire map could be filled with pits in which different (or multiples of the same) animal/monsters could live. 04) Implement a toggle able option to “Auto pickup loot bag”. This would make invasions and normal fighting easier if the winner not only moved onto the loot bag, but also was able to auto pick it up. If this was not wanted (for whatever reason) the player could simply toggle it off in the options menu. 05) Recommend having all skills and/or nexus be granted either by a quest, a book, or payment in gc in lieu of using those ever increasingly valuable pick points. 06) Recommend modifying the current human nexus requirements for weapons and armor (should suggestion 5 not be acceptable) to something like the following: WEAPONS..........ARMOR............NEXUS REQ’D Wood................Leather....................0 Iron..................Iron.........................1 Steel.................Steel Chain..............2 Titanium............Titanium Chain.........3 New Swords.......Iron Plate.................4 Magical (Old)......Steel Plate...............5 Magical (New).....Titanium Plate..........6 *Reserved*........Magical Armor..........7 07) Recommend modifying the gc drop table to remove the possibility of receiving a zero gc drop and align the gc drop with the monster in question. All gear and/or item drops (except the rare specials that cannot be manufactured) could be removed as compensation for increased gc drops. This would also serve to stimulate the economy. As an example: MONSTER RANGE.................GC DROP RANGE Below Unarmed Goblin..................1-20 Goblin to Gargoyles.....................30-50 Phantom Warriors to Orcs............60-80 Troll to Ogres.............................90-110 Armed Orcs..............................120-140 Cyclops....................................150-170 Fluffy Rabbits............................180-200 Chimeran Wolf - Desert.............210-230 Chimeran Wolf - Forest..............240-260 Chimeran Wolf - Mountain..........270-290 Chimeran Wolf - Artic................300-320 Yeti..........................................330-350 Giant........................................360-380 08) Last, but certainly the most capable of reducing the gc pool in game, would be to allow ‘redeeming’ negative perks for gc. A buy-back program if you will. No need to reset if the player can ‘try’ a negative perk and see if it feasible to continue. If it does not work out the player could then buy-back the negative perk with gc. The player would ‘lose’ the perk, but retain the pick points (similar to the new Scotty perk). This could only be accomplished once so high-level (i.e. wealthy) players could not constantly re-buy negative perks and redeem them for the pick points. As an example: NEGATIVE PERK.........BUY-BACK VALUE Scotty...............................300K Power Hungry....................300K I Can’t Dance....................500K Gelatine Bones..................600K Godless............................800K Hellspawn..........................1M Antisocial...........................1M [Epilogue] Again, just some ideas I have been considering. Not meant to be criticisms or complaints. I believe the EL team has done an amazingly fantastic job on this wonderful adventure. Thank you for the opportunity to make these suggestions.
  18. What is the highest creature you can kill?

Highest monster I can kill is the giant. Highest monster I can train on is the yeti. Neither is in the poll.
  19. EL Essay

DATELINE: Irilion, the 3rd Mortun of Chimar, 3:00. LOCATION: Irinveron, Fisher’s Point, between the Havian Straits and Glacian Ocean. PURPOSE: Locate and interview one of the Eternal Lands most secretive and elusive inhabitants known only as dust. After following some very expensive tips from those wishing to remain anonymous, I finally discovered where the battle-scarred veteran, known as dust, quietly bides the time between her ferocious battles with Yetis and Chimeran Wolves. We see a petite, athletic figure sitting behind her best friend Chary, the storage matron. Her outward appearance is meek, mild, aged; yet her demeanor is pure business and one look into her eyes gives you the certain feeling you are in the presence of the shadow of death. I cough hesitantly and ask if this is a good time to speak of her adventures in this land. She looks up from her essence mixing session, smiles ever so briefly, and nods almost imperceptibly. I hurriedly sit, dig out a parchment and quill from my pack and thank her for this opportunity. Irilion Informer: How long have you traveled these Eternal Lands? dust: I will celebrate my first anniversary this very month. Irilion Informer: What difficulties did you experience in your early life here? dust: Having been raised in Grubani Penninsula after the Great War, you can imagine the shock of adjusting to all new surrounding as quickly as possible. My parents were victims of a marauding Cyclops when I was quite young and I was forced to survive by my wits and strength. Irilion Informer: How did you overcome these difficulties? dust: I quickly became a voracious reader, anxiously devouring everything written about this fascinating world. I trained ceaselessly on everything that moved until I knew what to do instinctively. Irilion Informer: Are you addicted to the adventure or the endless possibilities here? dust: I would not say addicted exactly. I take time out from my daily fighting to learn the finer arts of alchemy, potion making, summoning, manufacturing, magic, and perhaps even crafting one day. These other endeavors assist me with patience so I rarely fight more than 6 hours per day ;-) Irilion Informer: How much do you accomplish in a single day? dust: My present daily routine consists of strength and endurance training with approximately one thousand monsters and then a relaxing break to make the supplies I need for the next training day. I am content with that for now. It may change in the future as the possibilities offered here are unlimited. Irilion Informer: What improvements could be made to attract and keep new adventurers? dust: As the land appears to be increasingly filled with younger and younger adventurers, I would recommend having them outfitted with the basic necessities of life upon their arrival. Then, for those willing and interested in learning more, have more stimulating quests geared to enhance their knowledge, skills, abilities, and possessions. Life can be very hard for those who have no patience here. Death lurks around every corner and you must be vigilant and have the courage to persevere. Irilion Informer: How long did it take you to become accustomed to this land? dust: I was comfortable with my surrounding the first day actually, but then I am driven to achieve a single purpose here and am well on my way to accomplishing that. Irilion Informer: May I be so bold as to inquire of this goal about which you speak so passionately ? dust: I aspire to one day become the most effective giant slayer to travel these lands. And when newer, more fearsome creatures are discovered; they too shall fall effortlessly before me. Irilion Informer: After hearing of your many almost unbelievable accomplishments here, I have no doubt you will be successful. dust: Your words show wisdom beyond your years my friend. Irilion Informer: What sources of assistance did you find most helpful? dust: The people here are kind, courteous, patient, and friendly. The Ancients have left many books, scrolls, and parchments filled with unimaginable knowledge. You have but to explore, look, touch, absorb everything and you will be well equipped. Irilion Informer: I would like to thank you for your forthrightness and I am sorry, but I must ask the one question you probably get wherever you travel. How is it possible for you to be so healthy? What is your secret? dust: Off the record? Irilion Informer: Of course, I will say nothing if you do not want me to. <dust leans forward slightly and whispers into my ear.> Irilion Informer: Good Lord! No wonder. Irilion Informer: There you have it folks. Everything you could possibly want to know about that elusive, dark shadow we all know simply as dust.
  20. Bug with Augmented Leather Torso

Should be fixed for Gnomes now, but requires a client restart. Please specify exactly which races and genders have problems with it. Yes, I restarted my client, received a small 'patch' and the torso now shows up. Drat, I was actually hoping you would make the pants invisible too *giggles*
