Rid the corpse DB.

Recommended Posts

After watching my friend hunting Gargs in TG and seeing him struggle to pick up the bag that lay beneath it, I thought to myself: Why would a garg drop a bag if it dies, or a bunny for that matter >.> .

Im suggesting that all bags dropped by corpses of all sorts (animals, creatures, players) are ridded. Now I know you might be thinking, won't we have cluttered spawn with all the corpses laying around for 12 min? Well, yeah. So I think you should be able to access the corpses drop via clicking the corpse itself for the first 3 min or whatever the defualt time it takes for a corpse to dissapear. Because think, you never wait 12 minutes to pick up that db from that cyc or whatever your killing. Once that time has expired, then the contents will be transferred to a bag, so no cluttering will take place.

Otherwise, all bags that are not drops resulting from a death should be left as is.

I think this is a good idea, no?

To make it easier to pick up bags, bring some cheap item in one of the first 6 rooms in your inventory.

When you have killed the garg or whatever you are training, drop the item, and the bag opens.

No need to open your inventory.

Good for picking bags up from water or quicksand too.

Well how about the bags stay, and no need to throw away anything... as soon as you kill the creature the bag opens, of course some people would not like to have their bag opened every time, so I'm thinking that this could be set by the player via the settings

You don't throw anything away, you drop an item and pick it up again and the drop from the garg - they are in same bag - use get all.

Best thing to do when trying to pick up a bag? Drop 1gc into the bag. (Gargs drop GC, use that?) it will open the bag that was dropped, and it will stack onto the other GC that was dropped, so you don't 'loose' anything, and don't need to wait to get it. Problem solved?

(If your traiing on Animals, drop a bone, it'll stack too, so you just press 'Get all' and it's sorted.)

:P

An auto opening back would be a good feature

IIRC it has been suggested couple of times and rejected because it does encourage macroing. But if you don't think it does, maybe you could do it?

As ville-v said, this has been discussed a number of times. In addition to macro'ing, it can be rather inconvenient to have bags opening automatically and blocking your view, especially when there may be more critical things you need to be paying attention to...

As for using the bodies instead of bags -- you can select creature & animal bodies ("you can't fight dead entities" etc). There are interesting possiblities for this:

  • You are searching the corpse or skinning the carcass to get the best parts. Could be a skill or attribute test -- the better the result, the better the find [1]. This has been discussed before under "skinning" and "hunting" (search), and could encourage team work if there was an advantage in having a specialist searcher (thief, rogue, hunter, etc).
  • Death/drop bags generated when the corpse vanishes. The value of items in drop bags would be less if the better finds can be recovered from the body of course.
  • Characters don't leave corpses. Maybe they should? You have to hang around as a disembodied entity until you "respawn" in the underworld, after some appropriate time. Makes death a bit less trivial, and means you get to see and hear your killer dance on your grave. But this opens up some new possibilities:
    • "speak with dead" spell could allow characters to speak with recently departed. The dead cannot speak until respawned (all outgoing messages blocked or perhaps redirected to a "I hear dead people" channel).
    • "raise dead" spell, could be cast while the body is still fresh, brings you back to life. Also applies to other entities of course [2].
    • How would searching a body interact with Rostogol stones? Items are recovered from the deceased's inventory before the death bag is formed (though deathbags would be reduced to compensate). Weakens the effect of the stones.
    • Boobytrap in your rucksack! Carry a trap, if it is recovered by a body search it inflicts damage.

If items recovered from the body, and items in death bags are separated, then there is no new state information. All you are adding is a "use corpse" action, and delaying the death bag generation until the body is removed from the game.

[1] All "special" finds would have to be recovered from the body. Anything left in a bag afterwards would be mundane items only.

[2] Keep raising & killing a monster till you get the special drop? Can be designed to avoid this.

Trollson, all your ideas are good ones, but there is so much work to do in other areas, that those things are not a big priority. Only few mobs bodies cover the bag anyway.
