Votive Offerings

Recommended Posts

The interaction of characters and their chosen gods is minimal at present -- once a character has got his or her experience bonuses, their only interaction is an occasional blessing.

Votive Offerings

A votive offering is am object left in a sacret place for religious purposes. In EL terms, it could be an artifact representative of a god used to incur their favor (as in consumed in a votive prayer).

Any devout artisan (a master of crafting or manufacture) could produce a votive artifact specific to one of the gods they follow. This would require both skill in their art, and a high rank in the church or sect -- treat their rank as a nexus in this case?

There would be appropriate votive artifacts for each god from each artisan skill.

So, a high level craftsman and follower of Mortos could produce a statuette of the god as an offering, or if the skill where manufacturing the artisan could produce a cereminal sword (not of useful in combat).

Followers of the same god could then use these votive offerings in religious practices, according to their rank (as per level). The same "mix" dialog is used -- mix offering with other ingredients, which are lost in exchange for the (possible) favor of the god.

The simplest form of votive prayer would be to obtain a blessing (not confined to the locale of the priest, but costing more). Other forms of prayer would depend on the gods...

So:

  • What form would these offerings take?
  • What prayers could be appropriate for the various gods?

Be interesting to see what form they take (not long to wait then!).

My line of thought was heading towards a form of magic and spells (prays?), the power (ie, mana) for which is sought by beseeching the appropriate diety. So seperate lists of "spells" for each god, effect and chance of sucess derived from rank in the specific church. Using the votive offerings as the principle (nonstackable) ingredient in the pray.
