goatsgomoo Report post Posted April 18, 2005 ditto n : a mark used to indicate the word above it should be repeated [syn: ditto mark] v 1: repeat an action 2: repeat an action or statement; "The next speaker dittoed her argument" Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) Ditto \Dit"to\, n.; pl. Dittos. [it., detto, ditto, fr. L. dictum. See Dictum.] The aforesaid thing; the same (as before). Often contracted to do., or to two ``turned commas'' (``), or small marks. Used in bills, books of account, tables of names, etc., to save repetition. A spacious table in the center, and a variety of smaller dittos in the corners. --Dickens. Ditto \Dit"to\, adv. As before, or aforesaid; in the same manner; also. What I don't get is why this needed a whole new topic..
Lachesis Report post Posted April 18, 2005 Because I was just making fun and this didn't belong in the original thread and forum at all. Btw, in German, this word is either spelled dito (one t) or detto (Austrian). However I have a younger sister that used to be quite crazy about pokémon, and that's the reason why this cute little creature came into my mind before the actual meaning of the word, and I found this fact so amusing that I decided to create a post here. I have to admit I didn't check the English spelling though, so I didn't know it's really double t in English. With regards Lachesis
Arnieman Report post Posted April 18, 2005 yeah, had it been posted in the original topic, it could have been considered off-topic. However, by posting here, the cute little critter actually BECOMES the topic... quite an interesting connection.
