    What am I doing wrong? patch -p0 < ./randombagspatch patching file bags.c patch: **** malformed patch at line 12: // forward declarations Not sure how tough it is to change, but updating cvs is easier for me than patching files like this.
  2. Summoning

    If summoning is allowed while in combat, the best PK strategy would be to spam summon rats or rabbits to completely absorb an attack from your enemy. This has been discussed time and time again. Unless summoners want to deal with a 5 second cooldown for normal summons, I don't think this is a good idea. The summon stones are at least expensive enough where a player will at least think twice before unleashing an army of monsters. The 3 second cooldown on summon stones also helps (though increasing this to 5 would promote more strategy instead of players fighting a zoo). A player able to spam summon his own rats can divert all damage from something like a giant or dragon while engaged in melee combat, just by repeatedly summoning small creatures. A "weak" player (even with a reasonable enough summon level not to crit fail lots of summons) should not be able to stand toe to toe with a dragon like that, imo.
  3. Random bag positioning

    If you have a pile of bags on their own, off in the distance, not relative to any character, then maybe they look fine. My issues posted about earlier all relate to relative locations. Drop down a bag at your feet, and turn around in a circle (8 positions) with insert or delete. Then try the same thing, sitting after each rotation. During first round of tests, I was sitting at a storage with most of the bag behind me. Facing a different direction, that same bag was oddly sticking out of my foot or side (standing vs. sitting). This looks far worse than the original placement, imo. I would venture to guess that most bags which pop up are directly underneath a player (or will be a second after a player kills a creature). This is the situation where "randomly" positioned bags look their worst. I think it is not worthwhile to implement a feature which can make a big, far off pile of bags look better -- at the expense of a more common "under foot" situation. Given that this is the suggestions forum, I would suggest: reverting back to the original bag location code, and brainstorming for ideas which can fix the effect of the bags looking so mechanically placed. Is it possible to have a bag pushed off center to always be in front of where the character is facing? e.g. if I face North and drop a bag, that bag would be biased to the North of the tile. If I pick up that bag and spin to head East, a bag dropped on this same tile would be biased East. One other possible idea (not sure if it would look terrible, or be too tough to implement): is it possible to have randomly displayed skins (maybe 4 slightly different bag styles) randomly chosen when a bag is created?

    The lower offset does look better than the previous random bag positioning, however I still don't see any improvement over the status quo. The random bags often still look terrible in relation to characters. I tried sitting and standing on various tiles, facing various directions. Personally, I think there is too long a list of bugs and feature requests to see why the minutia of bag positioning on a given tile is getting the attention. I do appreciate the effort to make EL more aesthetically pleasing, but I don't know that random positioning can ever look universally "good" while characters can face 8 different directions on a given tile.

    I find it disorientating to have bags show up in random directions relative to my character. If watching a pile of bags from far off, perhaps the random placement looks better, but functionally, it's terrible, imo. Sitting on a bag, and having the bag mostly behind my character just looks funny. Maybe it can look reasonable to have the bag slightly in front, but that means 7/8 times, it looks awkward, at best. If there is a desire to make bags look less standard, maybe one of several (new) random textures can be chosen for them? Then a pile of bags would have some differentiation, without looking like half the players in a storage have random golden tumors.

    And here lies the biggest problem of all. Our famous striker want 'other' people to pay the cost price and make a profit. But he doesn't want to do it 'himself'. IE wants to sell those steel greaves for cost plus but doesn't want to buy them for that. He still wants the undercut price. Those who support this 'joker' should now withdrawn it. Or maybe he just doesn't want to spend 1M gc buying the excess steel greaves which have oversaturated the market. Why don't you throw together a few million gc and buy everything that's underpriced on market, then resell at the "new" higher prices? Easier said than done.

    dark_elf logged on, and shortly thereafter, an attempt was made to transfer an item between dark_elf and emil8. I don't doubt that those two characters were originally created by two individuals, however this does not preclude those characters from being shared, and the second character being used illegally. dark_elf was only logged in for a short time to make the transfer, then logged out. This did not at all look like a second player actually playing. The difference is not all that difficult to see. Note in-game rule 4 regarding sharing accounts. Regardless of age, if someone shares his password and that character gets in trouble, he doesn't have the liberty of pleading ignorance. As we discussed in-game, your typical efforts to make sure everyone at your location follows the rules are appreciated, but short of being awake 24/7, this isn't foolproof.     Looks to me like the path to the server (formerly above.net) is down, not the server itself.
  11. Broder invasion creature: people would stay clear of invasions. Challenging one's self is one thing; to be in a multicombat map and suddenly find yourself surrounded by 20 brod'ing creatures, is another. Invasions are challenging, and also fun. I've broken my fair share of gear in the process of fun, just from random chance. There is WAY too much risk involved and blame to be thrown around if such a creature were to be added. Conspiracy theories would rise the first time someone lost so much as a uni med. Bad idea, imo. As for the gratuitously added dragon shield idea: +6 heat protection would be a nearly free run for anyone harvesting hydrogenium ore. +6 cold protection means anyone can train in a cold map with steel plate armor, taking no cold penalty. The bonuses given by the various armors were not chosen randomly. Try thinking through these ideas, before proposing what seem to be arbitrarily chosen numbers (not to mention hijacking a thread).
  12. Political faction system

    I don't really like any of these ideas, as proposed. I personally fail to see what it has to do with a medieval style game. If such items as the obama sword are added. It's nice to have EL so separated from RL woes, and I'd rather not bring political nonsense any further than the already questionable channel 6 banter. Some other ideas could work in theory, (like total war), but never in practice (like total war). I'd like to see a poll of people who would pledge to use such a system, and for those people to be bound to their decision. This would ensure anyone voting for a given idea doesn't simply waste developer time by coding another underutilized feature.

    they aren't ill-gotten goods, i still harvested flowers to get my money for it. and most of the time i only used the 1 character You cheated. You got caught cheating. You lied about cheating. Also note that you lost the privilege of using alts. If you have more than one character at any point (whether it be using someone else's, or sharing your own), all involved characters will be locked. You may agree to follow the all of rules and continue playing with your new character (stonero0), or if you do not agree to these terms, stonero0 will be locked as well. Your call.

    You'd be looking at an item wipe for the illegal multiplay, and possibly a stats wipe. The stats themselves are minimal. Just use your new character, and be thankful.

    What happened to earlier today when you read through the rules, and came to the conclusion that you didn't do anything wrong? I have absolutely no reason to believe that you have read and understand the rules. Similarly, I have no reason to believe you would follow the rules hereon in. You don't seem to understand what you did wrong. How can you be sorry for something where even after reading through the rules today, you didn't even think you did? I really see no credible remorse, nor indication that you would follow the rules if unlocked. I see no way in which your return to the EL community would be beneficial to anyone. Why do you feel you deserve another chance? Can you demonstrate your understanding of the rules which you now apparently remember breaking? If so, how can we be assured you would not break those rules again, nor the others you have not yet broken?

    Odd, I've never seen a slow computer actually force someone into cheating via illegal multi-playing, nor forcing him into harassing a moderator with decidedly foul language. If you'd like to continue to lie about what you have done, then I suspect these forums will be the only side of EL you see from now on. Enjoy.

    Exadion can be unlocked, with the following stipulations: no alts, no bots, no sharing, no anything. Xerocool would need to post on his own behalf, and would be dealt with separately. If at any point you use one another's characters, this violates the terms above, and both will be locked.

  25. White tiger stone + AMD64 linux client crash

    I suspect there are different flags set for Intel 64 bit vs. AMD. This may cause problems. Also, your CPU cores seem to be speed stepping down to 1GHz each, instead of 2.83. This could also cause performance issues, though not likely flat out crashing. I had to uncap my framerate or disable powersaving in order to avoid this. Lastly, be absolutely sure that you do not have corrupt data files. Rename the EL folders (~/.elc/ and /usr/local/games/el by default, iirc), then download & install a fresh data package for 1.8 and see if there are any improvements.
