  1. No sound, ALSA problem

This is really a Linux/ALSA question... maybe... ... okay, that's my question: Who should I ask about this? ... This question is not really directly related to the game. So, I understand if no one wants to post an answer. However, any answers or insight, or even guesses, will be greatly appreciated. I can't get sound to work with Eternal Lands. It works for all other apps that I use, but it's not the game's fault. I'm just hoping someone here will have greater insight than I do. SuSE Linux 10.0 openal v. 20050801 alsa v. 1.0.10 Here's the error message I get when I start el: So, it looks like it's an error on line 2038 of pcm.c that should be in the source code for ALSA. Is it using a variable that isn't defined? Isn't there supposed to be a filename where it currently says "(null)"? Like I said, it's not your problem, but maybe you're feeling kind I use either YaST or Apt for RPM for most of my software updates. I've read K&R. I can read C, but that's not exactly the same as being a programmer. I downloaded (all 39Mb of) the ALSA source and line 2038 of pcm.c in the alsa-lib source is a closing bracket for a conditional block. The block doesn't have any references to snd_pcm_open_conf, but I searched some more and found that that's the name of a function. In the function definition, I can find the error message: Now I'm at my dead end. I know that this is kind of technical and there are only a handful of people who know what I'm talking about... and I'm not one of them , but I'm willing to do the work to figure out the problem if someone can point me in the right direction. Thank you, -- Ghodmode
  2. Did Ent Trip Over The Cords Again

How do I eat?... I have some raw meat, and I've tried double right-clicking on it, but it doesn't work. How do I cook it?... No... the games down, I'm talking about real life... I forgot how to eat real food... Is the game back up yet? I'm hungry and I don't know how to eat here.
  3. Did Ent Trip Over The Cords Again

Could someone please post Entropy's real name and home & mobile phone numbers here so that we could call him to ask about the status of the server?
  4. Did Ent Trip Over The Cords Again

Let's see... 20 minutes ago Ent did a restart to add debugging code "just in case there's another crash"...
  5. Linux Sound Requirements?

My sound is working ... just in case anyone's curious... At some point, I had installed the eternallands package from the Dries apt-get RPM repository. I didn't like the way it installed, so I removed it right away and went back to playing the copy I had downloaded from the EL web site. The only problem was that it left a directory in my home directory named .elc. The .elc directory contains configuration files, including el.ini. Apparently the el.ini file in ~/.elc overrides the one in the EL installation directory. The default el.ini file has the sounds turned off. So, my sound was turned off. As far as I know, ~/.elc is not documented anywhere. I found out about it by running EL with ltrace. Now all of the other changes that I've made to that config file work, too . I thought they didn't work because they weren't implemented yet Regards, GM
  6. Linux Sound Requirements?

Still no luck Sound works in all other applications (xmms too) I've never had a .openalrc in my home directory before, but I put one there now, just in case. I can't find any decent documentation, but here's what I put in there To me it looks like I have an opening single-quote without a closing one, but I found it like that on more than one page, so I left it like that. Of course, if I wanted to write an application using the OpenAL libraries, the specification is well documented at openal.org, but it didn't look like that would help me in this case. I did rpm -ql openal and found that it only put a few files there. They looked like libraries to me, so I added them to LD_LIBRARY_PATH like this: I know that /usr/lib is probably a default location that it will look anyway, but I thought it was worth a try. In el.ini there is a line that says I don't think that was like that originally. I think that it was set to 1 by default and I changed it to 0 to get the sound working when I first installed it. I've checked all my sound settings and nothing is turned all the way down. Everything's all the way up except for main. I've re-installed the kernel and alsa modules that I had previously removed, then booted with them. Any other ideas? Thank you, GM
  7. Linux Sound Requirements?

What are the sound requirements for running EL on Linux? I had sound and now I don't. This is probably my fault. I've installed a new kernel and removed the old kernel since the last time I played. I think there were a buncha ALSA dependencies with that older kernel that I removed, too. I'm using Fedora Core 2, Kernel 2.6.7.494. I'm using apt-get along with Synaptic for the updates. Thanks, GM
