  1. I agree to participate in the study My in-game names are KeiraOwl and Rohanna My real-life sex is female.
  2. If you are using Windows, then open the file manager (my computer), and navigate to the program files directory where EL installed itself - the default is C:\Program files\Eternal Lands. In this directory, there should be a subdirectory called shaders. Click on the directory to highlight the name for editing, and re-name it. I just added -original to the name. If you are running Linux, the procedure should be much the same, unless you don't have a GUI front end. Good luck. I hope that this works for you. I just need to hunt down the Grue, and kill it. Stoopid Grue keeps eating me... KeiraOwl (Sandi)
  3. I don't have an el.ini in my my documents directory. Unfortunately, due to a computer rebuild, I am doing a fresh install of EL. The old version of the client (1.6) ran on this laptop, on this hard drive, but that was before I had to re-format the drive. Torg has suggested that I put a copy of el.ini in the my documents directory, and see whether that makes a difference, so I will try that and report back on what happens... The window initialised as a window, then went to full screen, and proceeded as before, so it is probably a driver issue. Bugger. Many attempts at debugging later... I will not cut a long story short... I tried the final release candidate - no difference. I tried release candidate 2 - no difference. Release candidate 1 - no difference I uninstalled the omega drivers and restarted the computer. Crap resolution indicated that the drivers had uninstalled completely, unlike the removal of the Dell drivers previously, which still showed good resolution on reboot. Re-installed a clean copy of the Dell ATI drivers and re-booted the computer. Started EL and was able to log in successfully. Re-named the EL directory and re-installed the 1.7 client. EL fell over when initialising OpenGL. Checked for differences between the two directories - the shaders directory had been renamed in the working copy, but not in the new install. When I had re-named the shaders directory previously, it was with the omegadrivers installed, and EL had the fullscreen problem. Re-named the shaders directory in the fresh EL install, reverted the directories to Eternal Lands and Eternal Lands-working, and tried again. EL took a while to initialise the OpenGL, but did so successfully, and is now running happily. My #gl info reports that I am running OpenGL version 2.0.5279 WinXP release. So, to finally cut the long story short: After uninstalling the omegadrivers completely, re-installing the Dell ATI drivers and renaming the shaders directory, the EL client is running happily for me. Why it would not do this in the first place is probably that I installed the omegadrivers before re-naming the shaders directory. Therefore, in this case, it would appear that the omegadrivers do not work and play happily with my Dell laptop. Many thanks to everyone for their help. I am now a very happy camper, because I am off work (sick) bored out of my brain, and desperate for a bit of EL action, which I can now get. KeiraOwl (Sandi)
  4. I have a very similar problem to LilBear... The client crashes on login. I could run 1.6 with my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000 with ATI mobility Radeo x300 card) running the most recent drivers from Dell (dated around 2005). With 1.7, I can not run EL. I downloaded the most recent drivers from ATI - they will not install on my machine. I re-installed the latest drivers from Dell - EL could not get past checking the open GL before crashing. I went to omegadrivers, and downloaded their latest driver. The client now tries to start in full screen, at 640 x 480. I can not get it to change to any other settings. When I try to log on, it crashes. My laptop *is* my desktop machine, so I can not try 1.7 on my desktop. I have tried renaming the shaders directory, but that makes no difference. I've no idea what is going on, and the latest drivers from ATI will not work on my laptop. :`( KeiraOwl (Sandi)
  5. clicking on a window outside the game

If I click outside the EL window, the client seems to apply the mouse click to the nearest action on the EL window. So far, since starting play today, I have had the stats window come up multiple times, and my character has tried to walk to a different area on the screen. I have been told my position on the map a lot, as well. :| If I bring up another program from the tool bar, it does not immediately take the focus away from EL. I had this problem with the client version 1.33, and I am currently running the client version 1.4. I just noticed something else that may help to trace this one... When my mouse cursor is in the frame around the active part of the window (in the brown woodgrain bit, including the HUD), the walking cursor is displayed. It changes to an arrowhead or hand when hovering over items (for eating etc). Also, when the cursor is _just_ outside the EL window (by one or two pixels), the walking cursor is displayed.
  6. Unsure where to post this...Mod please address this

I had seen this message before as well, and had not been very impressed. Tonight, however, I tried to put items into the same space in my inventory. (Testing for the message.) The item would not move, and no message was displayed. It looks as though this one has been fixed. If so, many thanks to whoever fixed it. KeiraOwl
  7. Nice new look

There are some problems with the new maps. Meh. There are some funky looks in the new maps! I've not left whitestone yet (except to explore a new hole in the ground), but the changes that I've seen on the map look good. More flowers, pretty meadows, all sorts of neat stuff. THANK YOU TO THE DEVELOPERS AND DESIGNERS. It's a nice new look, and the bugs will get squashed one by one, as bugs often are. I've got to go to work, or I'd explore more. Well done! to everyone involved. hugs, KeiraOwl
  8. Release candidate 4

I downloaded the zip file three times (overall), to be certain that the download was OK. I unzipped it into the EL directory, as directed, but without using folders. I had to delete the whole mess, because the files went into the EL directory, and I didn't know where to move them to. I made a copy of my backup, and I then unzipped using folders, and it unzipped into a folder called update_files (or some such). I got the new exe file from the link in this thread, overwrote the el exe file, and the program would not start. I repeated the process several times, and put the files from the update directory into their respective places in the main EL directory. the program stopped throwing error messages and started. After the skin mapping problem, I repeated the process yet again, and copied the files from the update directory, blah, blah, blah, and the skin mapping (the image that was the 'skin' didn't fit the skeleton) problem went away. I still have the problem with the area near the NPC in Aluwen's temple. I just took a screen shot of it. I am heading to Vermor Castle to repeat the process. I have made a copy of the error log, but will not post it here, it is too big. It will also be put on the web for your perusal. They are at: ErrorLog27-28Jan06 http://www.geocities.com/skiingowl/aluwen.jpg http://www.geocities.com/skiingowl/vermor.jpg I didn't know that the Vermor one was meant to be like that. My bad. Sorry for causing trouble. I hope that this helps. regards, Sandi (AKA KeiraOwl)
  9. Release candidate 4

I have a big problem in the temple of Aluwen. There is no floor around the NPC Noria, and I can't move close enough to talk to her. As I'm doing one of the god quests, this is a problem for me. From one POV, the 'floor' is black, and from another it is blue. There is a small quantity of 'grass' at the bottom of the stairs. If I click on the plants, I can walk to them, but I can't walk to any part of the blacked out 'floor' KeiraOwl Another similar problem inside Vernor Castle - 'castle insides' 105,40 It looks like it may be a graveyard, but the floor is black and you can't walk on it.
  10. Release candidate 4

I made the files go splat again, and the texture maps seem to be working fine now. This is the third time that I've overwritten them... the unzipping didn't go very smoothly. Still, it's good to know that the client is OK. My only other problem has been that twice I've been typing something into an IRC session that is running on my other machine (I'm accessing it using mstsc), and after hitting enter and going back to the EL window (which did not have the focus) I've noticed that the text is there as well, but with the last letter repeating all by itself - I was not touching the keyboard. That one is random, and has only happened twice, so I have no clues about what caused it. If it happens again, I'll try to note down more details. KeiraOwl
  11. Release candidate 4

Not a big issue, but it's a new one (I think). My iron sword and my iron chain mail do not skin properly... Half of the sword is grey, they other half is a brownish bronze. There is a dark grey stripe down the back of my arms when I'm wearing the mail. I have screen shots of them, I just need to put them on my web page somewhere... I'm running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. KeiraOwl Addendum: Ant_19 has white on the backs of his arms, and bluefrog has a shield that's part wood, and part black and grey when I look at them (Whitestone vege patch in the south west corner), so it's not just my character that isn't mapping properly for me. I recall, now that I think of it, that some of the graphics files from the zip file had older dates than the files that I was replacing. I will try restoring from my backup, and see whether it makes a difference...
  12. Pat the animals

When the hour changes... do not pat the bears. KeiraOwl is fertilizer. Keira
  13. This is a silly suggestion, but... On Peace Day, could we pat the animals? Make them happy, just like patting cats? So, instead of "no fighting" the message could be "you patted the bear" or whatever. Keira
  14. crowns!

They look like circlets (usually more plain than tiaras) to me... Keira I like them. They work well with the overall feel of the game. Keira
  15. The rollback

I logged on, was totally unimpressed that everything that I had worked on in the last day was gone, worried about what had happened, found out from my guildmates about the rollback, said, "oh, bugger" and got on with playing the game. What I lost, in reality, was around 12 hours of my time. No big deal, really, since I didn't have anything else productive to do with my time that day. Shit happens, systems crash, systems get bugs... my mother's hard drive died, taking all of her data with it before it had been backed up... things like that happen in computing. I guess that what I am trying to say is that I don't want to complain about the rollback, because these things happen. See, not only the people who are complaining post. I must admit, however, that most people do post to complain. Keira
