seems to have stopped crashing when I turned off custom looks updates and show custom clothing.

This sounds and looks just like a crash I encountered when using custom clothing, here is the thread. At that time, I worked at locating the bug for hours but never found it. As no one else appeared to be experiencing the bug I let it go; I just avoid custom clothing. BTW, showing custom clothing is fine, it's just when the files are being updated that I experience the crash. May be it's time to look again.
