Australians - Electronic Freedom Project

Recommended Posts

The Australian Federal Government (the Labor Party) intends to implement complete internet filtering.

There will be 2 levels of filtering, and they are not opt-in, you will be filtered automatically, with only the first level being opt-out-able. The second level cannot be opted-out of, and includes restricting all content with a rating above "R" (... and that's right ppl, amonst other things, no more pr0n)... and all online games rated above "MA".

First and foremost; this is a removal of freedom, on many levels.

Secondly, they plan to use Deep Packet Inspection, not just some HTTP filter, so every packet of data between you and the EL server will go through this filter, and will be slowed down as it is inspected.

I'm not going to go into deep detail about the whole situation, the link i'm about to provide has more info... i'm mainly posting this now because this weekend, in capital cities around Australia, protests are being held to try and stop this filter from being implemented.

Protest dates, locations and various other information about the situation is here:

Australian's might want to seriously look at whether either of the 2 major political parties actually matches their beliefs, and consider that there are other voting options.

Liberty and Democracy FTW!

Another thing worth noting, is that it's estimated that the initial setup of this filter will be 45 million dollars, and an additional 33 million dollars per year upkeep.

That's our tax dollars.

EDIT:

On the 28th of July the Australian government released a report detailing the results of a trial of six potential filters. The report included the following statistics.

Internet speeds dropped between 21% and 86%. The most accurate filter was also the one with the greatest drop in speed.

Content that the filters failed to block ranged from 2% to 13%.

Content blocked by mistake ranged from 1.3% to 7.8%

The type of websites blocked by accident may include websites on issues such as sexual health or breast cancer. Legitimate websites unfortunate enough to be hosted on a web-server with adult content are also likely to be blocked. Websites which are hacked or spammed with porn will again be blocked. Hate websites and websites deemed to be inciting criminal activity will be blocked, this may include websites promoting euthanasia or file sharing.

thats ok, i dont pay taxes..yet

Even if you don't pay tax as yet, the fact that money is being spent there, rather than in other areas, can still impact your life.

As Sapphyrah said, more and better equipped/staffed hospitals, for eg.

Call me n00 that's ok, but what does this filtering program have to do with ping rates?

And to clarify my earlier post, i don't condone PK, I was just making a joke!

But now Telstra and Internode have said they would not take part in the trials. iiNet has said it would take part only to prove to the Government that its plan would not work, while Optus will test a heavily cut-down filtering model.

Great to hear Aussie ISP's are not bending over for the government :brooding:

"Given that the traffickers of genuine abuse material will not let themselves be slowed down by a filter and are already covering their tracks, the net result that will be achieved here is exactly this: inconvenience, chaos and expense with absolutely no dividend for the children."

One of the biggest issues is a lack of understanding of technology by politicians and 'concerned parents'. They are not the people who should dealing with Internet related issues for this country...

Would you trust politicians advice on what brands and components should be used to service your car? or would you just an actual motor mechanic?

Call me n00 that's ok, but what does this filtering program have to do with ping rates?

The filtering method that will be used is called "Deep Packet Inspection" (DPI).

Unlike many internet content filtering software that you can install on your computer (or that ISP's offer server-side), that just filters HTTP (website) requests for certain keywords, the DPI system will scan and inspect every single (TCP) data packet that is sent between your computer and the internet.

Your ping time is the speed of which data packets get to and from the server.

When you play EL, every time another player or creature walks by you, or you mix something, or are engaged in combat, or basically have any activity happening on your screen, data packets are sent and received, and every single one of these packets will be slowed down as it is inspected for filtration.

will proxy's work?

Not for reducing ping time, no.

Encrypted VPN-style solutions could be used so that a person in Australia can still access any website on the internet, and they no doubt will be... and no doubt the usage of these solutions will be made easier and easier for the average user to utilise.

So the end result; anyone even a little computer-savvy will still be able to get to any sites they want, and the whole internet will simply be slower... bravo Mr. Rudd, bravo.

Plus, this will encourage the people out there looking for kiddy porn to learn about these systems, and will make it MUCH harder for police to catch them.
