1) I learned my lesson. Never ever give a person anything if you do not get the promised stuff instantly!

I have been reading about everyone getting scammed and bagjumped etc.. I TRULY believe that there should be an EASY way for us to see who is playing under a second ( third, fourth, etc...) name. Also, these playernames should be "rated" as to how many valid complaints are received about them. It would be cool if there were a "button" in the trade window that allows you to see tht players rating and aliases. What do you think?

We're thinking about a feature like that, but it's too early to talk about details.

 

I agree, it should be harder to have an alt for all the "bad" stuff and pretend to be a good guy with your main.

I already suggested something similar to this to learner a long time ago. I'm not sure what he did with my idea though.

 

Sometimes the list would be wrong because of shared IP.

Changed? Which way? By using different network cards?

 

Using other SW making the client believe it's got the right MAC address (although its not) is possible - but scammers go the easy way. So I think that - for them - it should be made too much effort to develop and use a SW like that.

 

Best way to prevent use of SW like that would be use of low level calls - some ASM code accessing the hardware directly via BIOS calls. In general that should work on all IBM-compatible PCs - no matter if linux or M$ DOS is used (since its BIOS calls). On the other hand I'm not sure if the kernel allows direct access like that at all ... Havent been deep down into kernel stuff yet.

 

If bios calls are not possible, you may have to make use of a "kernel system call" ... which might be "configured" as well (thanks to /proc) ... hum probably making alterations hard (complicated) for non IT experts would do it. Hope non of the "experts" is as mad spending time on making scripts or whatever for scammers breaking that kind of "solution".

 

btw 1: I do not claim to provide a solution ... this is just some thoughts on how I would try to launch into it

btw 2: I'm no native english language speaker but I tried my best to make it understandable

 

 

Finally all technical approach may fail. So I'm coming back to my (first) posting. Always play it safe and only trust PCs you know for a long time. Where everyone has to define "long" for her- or himself.

 

And dk123 scamming me was annoying, but hey - I still play eternal lands. Actually the session I finished before writing this reply took almost 2 days - non stop!

I havent seen him online and friends of mine neither. As well I tried to pick on him calling him a scammer - all I got was "no player having that name" messages.

So Mr Mind must be right.
