  1. ESD issues

I know that ESD has caused troubles from time to time, but I am able to listen to music from xmms, play a movie in xine etc. with ESD. Just promised Cicero to try out some different sound servers Starting the program with esddsp will cause all of the sounds to be piped through ESD. I have the latest CVS-version of OpenAL - that might also be the cause of the problem - I'll try with Cicero's snapshot... It might be a good idea to inform users of these problems though (in a Technical FAQ perhaps)...
  2. Huh? vi/vim are great (and light-weight) editors...? I take it that you are an Emacs user (only good alternative that I could think of )
  3. When you're writing code/scripts by hand while travelling to a meeting... (guilty as charged :-/) When you use and remember 20+ different passwords (passwords defined as strings of random characters ) When you know that the error message "Printer on fire" (changed to unknown error in 2.4.20-ac4 iirc?) is nothing to worry about Furthermore I have a tendency to open a command prompt whenever I'm forced to use a Windows-based machine hence getting disappointed that there's no /bin/bash, emacs or even vi :-( When there's no place like 127.0.0.1 When you end a sentence with :wq occasionally (has happened too many times :-/)
  4. Well, given the fact that RS has only been up to the public for 3 years, the most anyone could ever have wasted on RS would be 3 years Ended as a level 93 with 1272 skill total and spend the ~15 mill that I had gathered on gifts for my friends about a month ago :-) Still remember every place and the quickest way to level up any stat at a given level :S I still log in from time to time as I still have some good friends in RS - even though good people are hard to find in RS I've found a few very nice people, whom I wish the best for :-) I should've made my final decision for retirement sooner, as I had grown sick and tired of all of the immature children/adults? in the game - the EL community seems a bit more mature though - hopefully it'll stay that way ;-)
  5. Ehehe, fortunately I only wasted ~2 years on that game
  6. Odd error in cursors.c

    I'm running the latest 0.9.5p1 beta (from cvs), and strangely this bug happened a couple of times when running the client inside gdb and caused the client to segfault. Here's the backtrace: #4 0x4022f90b in __libc_start_main() from libc.so.6 #3 0x08071a3d in main () at main.c:76 #2 0x080719d3 in start_rendering () at main.c:47 #1 0x08060577 in draw_scene () at draw_scene:215 #0 0x0805eb2f in check_cursor_change () at cursors.c:203
  7. Odd error in cursors.c

It seems to be fixed with the new cursors.c :-) I guess that you're more productive than most developers
  8. Odd error in cursors.c

Managed to get some more info from the crash, as it happened again... Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. A quick guess would be that UNDER_MOUSE_3D_OBJ is null, and this is what produces this error?
  9. Evil Castle bug

Hmm - stop trying that many distributions to fix this issue, there's really not that big difference... I'm using the 4496-drivers and they seem to work fine. Could you post your /usr/X11R6/bin/glxinfo?
  10. Odd error in cursors.c

Just got the latest version of the CVS (only sound.c had changed from 1.6 to 1.7), but apparently I couldnt provoke the same crash. The segfault occured when i did a #beam me up and then upon the following logins when running in gdb. After closing gdb and running the app again this problem did not occur. Anyway, here's the "offending" code: void check_cursor_change() { int i; >> if(object_under_mouse!=-1 && objects_list[object_under_mouse] && thing_under_the_mouse==UNDER_MOUSE_3D_OBJ) { //blabla } else Seemed like a strange error to me, and perhaps it's simply an error with the debug code/binary... (compiled with default CFLAGS though)
  11. Im bored so I wrote some songs

The first text sounded more like a rock/metal lyric to me, but the second one was a bit more punk-like in my head They're both good, but I prefer the first one :-) And rock is not dead... It'll never die...
  12. Ok space fans, got it wrong

Haha, good one ;-) Somehow I doubt that they are satisfied with the aged chemical weapons that they found in the old swamp... :0)
  13. School computer

Well, not all countries use the same system you know :-)
  14. Mars, the new earth??

Personally I do not believe that the Human race will last that long - I doubt that we have more than a few thousand years more to exist before evolution or our own stupidity destroys us :-) But lighten up your spirit, there's still lot's of fun things to do in the world ;-) As for the ignorant governments... Well, the world is changing whether they like it or not - we should take some precautions to counter this new environment. With the current pace of the global heating we will see more and more species getting extinguished or mutate, as their living environment changes. Sadly everyone seems to close their eyes since it is more expensive to care about the environment than just to work on improving the economy. It's about money, power and ignorance... As with everything else
  15. Mars, the new earth??

One thing is for sure - it would be an extremely interesting experiment with terraforming Mars and we would learn alot from doing this (though this is most likely only going to happen when I've been 7ft under for a while ). Though you must realise that Mars is in the very outer region of the "life zone"/"green zone" where life can thrive in this solar system... First of all we should prioritise the environment on our precious and vulnerable Earth - if the governments around the world could just agree to do an even better job preventing the industry from poluting the environment and make the public transport better, move to renewable or alternative energy sources etc. we could stabilize the global heating on Earth thus making a more balanced industrialised society in harmony with the nature...
  16. Marriges by err..

Sorry, I did not mean to offend you. The words of the book will never be changed, I know this - my point is that the interpretion of these words will change with time...
  17. Marriges by err..

Well, with the risk of turning this into partly a religious discussion I'd like to say this: We live in the 21st century... Perhaps the religions should be brought up to date - seriously most followers of christianity (at least in Denmark) do not believe in every word of the bible... I think that religion should be a more personal conception of the world - e.g. believing in love and compassion instead of the owrds written hundreds of years ago... A priest in Denmark has actually said that he did not believe in God as a person but as love - a statement that first got him fired but then caused lots of stir in the media hence they eventually decided to reinstate him. All religions will eventually have to give in to the new ideas, changes in morality and society etc. But then again - my oppinions concerning christianity comes as an atheist that believes that religions have only been made to make it easier for people to comprehend how the world has been created and to make basic morale guidelines on how to behave around others. I am not sure whether you should believe a psychologist (perhaps you meant Freud?) from the late 1800s on this issue - I think that more modern behaviour studies should be used when discussing this - he might be wrong
  18. Marriges by err..

I'll just contribute with my own oppinions - might come back to flame you all later though ;-) In Denmark it is possible to get married as a homosexual couple - you just can't get a christian blessed wedding (in the church), and many gay couples are unhappy about this special treatment of heterosexuals. As an atheist I have no problem with gay couples getting married - even in the church. The most obvious problem is that it's up to the priests to decide whether he would marry a couple or not, and most priests choose not to marry a gay couple. Personally I don't think that a wedding in the church is that important, but it would be an important message to send if the church would let homosexual couples get married. This would contribute a lot to the acception of gay couples. As to the question of letting gay couples adopt a child, I am not that sure. I understand their need for raising up a child, and even though the parents may be very fit for the job, it still raises some new issues - since the society we live in is not allways as open minded as one could hope, this might lead to bullying of the child, who would get severe mental disadvantages because of this mental abuse. This is really my only concern, and it is not related to the gay parents, but to the society's acception of these partnerships...
  19. Fight for your country

Denmark Pro's: Great sence of humor ;-) Lovely girls Good beers :0) The hospital system seems to be a lot better than 2 years ago... Fairly talented rock musicians :-) Con's: The whole system is corrupted - we've (my family) been fighting cases against the government/administration for years and even though the system seems to work fine on the outside we've found out that on the inside procedures like "losing documents/evidence" and helping out colleagues by not looking at obvious evidence, disregarding the legislation etc. happens regularly The government has been lowering the taxes - of course people who earn lots of money will benifit more this way, and people who are poor won't benifit as much from these tax reliefes... Fair? I think NOT! Furthermore they've lowered the governmental expenses on families, people who are out of work, universities, lowered the aid to needing countries, etc. At the same time our prime minister tells us to work more, spend more time with the family and make Denmark a leading country of knowhow and technology... And look what a great job they're doing currently  ... The government has not made any new legislation/compromises with center/left-wing political parties - they've kept going to the extreme right wing for support :-( Many danes are intollerant and discriminating towards fugitives, immigrants and people with different beliefs/native languages/skin color. This is further induced by the right wing getting _way_ too much time in the national media hence spreading FUD about immigrants. Well... To summarize this in a nice way: the system needs a reboot and a better OS... BTW, I'm sorry about the flaming/rant that this post has become - I'm just a frustrated left-wing who wishes for a better and more balanced future for all of us :-) And I appologize for the poor/simplistic english... this is not my native language :-)
  20. Music

These are the bands that I listen to the most (in ~random order ) Metallica (Pre-St. Anger) Tool Pantera Kashmir (Danish band, you'll probably not know them :-) ) Machine head Oasis Bush Coldplay Creed Nirvana RHCP Radiohead
  21. Programming

Even though C might be a bit difficult as your first programming language, it has some advantages over the more "simplistic/acedemic" languages such as Delphi. You will get better at programming if you learn how to program in C before anything else, but it will be very hard for you at first... But you must know that C is more difficult to learn than Java/Delphi (imho :-) ). Programming does require some knowledge of how the computer works - well, at least when it comes to optimizing algorithms for a more rapid execution and lower memory usage. As you get better at programming it gets more and more important that you are also getting more aware of computer architecture - e.g. the basics of the memory system etc. Personally I have taught myself everything I know about programming - started out with Delphi when I was ~16 and now I'm programming mainly in C and ASM (18 years old now).
