  1. Gnomes In A Barrel!

I get that just from using copy'n'paste on market chan... people sending me "#inv"... maybe some day I'll send back "Unknown command, press Ctrl+Q for help"... then again... maybe not.
  2. Change The Message System

erm... a full and proper buddy list, to my mind (may not be exactly the same as devs here plan, I spose, but since I hear that there's sever-side code still needing to be written, I assume they're working on something similar) would be kinda like this: person X logs on, so all people with person X in their buddy list get a : Person X has just logged on! similar when they log off. So the buddy list would be able to show which people on the list are online or offline.
  3. Quick Suggestion

garnering, not gardening. Yes, it's a rarely used word. but garnering means getting stuff, basically. Well, if it's as well or better known, go for it. I'm certainly not from America, though (see 'From' to the side)
  4. XML format

It's been updated again, there's now a more free-form input option. Currently you can only use chapters, no sections, but there's no need for repetative copy'n'paste into multiple boxes.
  5. Gnomes In A Barrel!

a gnomish pigfarmer? wouldn't you be at risk of getting trampled?
  6. Sound Bug And "priority Issue"

I'm not certain, but I think that option is not turned on by default. If you use a kernel from your distro/whatever instead of rolling your own, there's a lot of variation though. some distros may deliver kernels with pre-emptive turned on from install. also, 2.4 (which many people still use, including many distros) doesn't have preemptible (unless it was backported)
  7. Sound Bug And "priority Issue"

An excellent point, I'd also say putting any graphical program at a nice level better than X is likely to be problematic, I've tried it before and wondered why the program actually lost performance
  8. Change The Message System

I do agree with all that placid is saying, however a compromise position may work, for example, require the first 5 letters before you can press the auto-complete key... the list returned shouldn't be that long (if it is, we can use a minimum of 6, 7, etc) this won't help any with people using short names, but with nicks that are like 20 chars long, saving a quarter of it wouldn't hurt, and there wont be that many similar names... another advantage of completion is the 1/I/l issue... characters that are different and look similar. if it's done by the server, the player doesn't have to try to figure out what char it is
  9. Sound Bug And "priority Issue"

That would be the IO schedulers, there's also another set in later 2.6 kernels (2.6.7? .9? not sure when it came in, plus I use -mm which could adjust when I see things) to adjust CPU scheduling, 3 options there as well (can't check very well, I use windows for EL) unsure what you mean by it lags as if the FPS was far lower, does this mean that the FPS around 30 still gives smooth animation, but trying to do something (like walking) lags? if so, perhaps seti@home is causing a bottleneck at the network card/modem or just reducing the EL traffic to check the CPU issue, use something like 'top' on the command line, and check how much CPU time each client is getting; if EL isn't getting a large share, then it probably is a CPU issue, if EL is getting most of it, then it's not a pure CPU issue. I'm not really familiar with the SETI@home client, are you perhaps running low on RAM? if the system is using swap, that will certainly slow things down ('top' will show this, so will 'free') HTH
  10. Quick Suggestion

Well, I like the idea, but I'm going with the 'too confusing' side... there's a ballance between being well set in the timeframe intended and being easy to learn/use. (for a really extreme example, back in those days, how many people would have been able to write or even read? you could have some pretty shocking fonts to imitate this ) But as I said, I like the idea, so if you come up with names that are as well based in the timeframe but still glaringly obvious, I'm all for it. one other point, many people in EL don't speak english as their first language, many may not know a lot of english. They would know what 'potions' means, but maybe not 'apothecary'. anouther area where keeping it simple is safest. one last point, if EL ever does get to the stage where you can load different language 'packs' to change all of the words client side, you'd be able to put together a 'fantasy' pack as well, for those who like that... setting up such a task isn't simple, though, so don't hold your breath for EL client to be completely translatable
  11. Shivar Poem Hehe

You posted a poem/song in the storylines forum during the short story, song/poem contest, so Quinticus has accepted it as a contenter... dun complain, you could win some great prizes!
  12. Legality Of (tc) Client

nonsence, check it again. The GPL doesn't at all restrict what the devs can do with their own work. It grants certain rights to the users of software, not the devs. also, read the liscense.txt that comes with EL, it's not a copy of the GPL If Entropy decides to make EL closed source and charge $100 for each copy, he can do that... he just wouldn't be able to remove the already published versions under GPL (note, liscense included is not GPL), but since access to the server is based on rules, the clients int he wild can be made useless anyway (for EL, there's undoubtedly a lot of useful stuff in there) there's no rule that bots have to tell the truth, that I've seen (there could be, though) this isn't an issue at point here. Entropy also doesn't seem (to me) to have anything against people making clients, provided they follow the rules. depends on how you interpret "some gamma correction" I'd take it to mean that you could put in some sort of gamma slider for the game(That'd be rather useful, actually), not that you can automatically adjust for when the night comes. as covered, he can do that. Even more, even if it were someone elses' client under GPL, he could introduce a closed source wrapper that's the only thing allowed to communicate with the server. liscenses rarely restrict the rights of the owners, they wouldn't be popular if so now, enough doom'n'gloom I tried out the TC client for a while(back to CVS, personal preference) there's a few things I'd really like to see make it into the official client, things like the drop-downs in magic and manu are quite nice, the larger quickbar would also be nice at larger resolutions (at 800x600, it covers the stats-in-hud) having the current co-ords is also nice, as is the shortcut for #gm showing XP gained (currently only shows combat, but it'd probably be quite possible to do it for all) is also nice there's quite a few good ideas in there
  13. Chating Xp

Actually, the idea came from the Quest for Glory series (first one was also called hero quest, if you only know that name) there were many stats/skills, that went from 0-100 for first game, continuing to 0-400 for fourth, and for the final fifth went a bit further to 0-650 or so this had stuff like strength, magic, intelligence, vitality, weapon use, throwing, climbing, stealth, pick locks, and so forth from the start(waaay back in VGA days, mid 80s, I think) as they went though (you could use characters from previous games) there were more skills added, like communication. this skill was used when bargaining with shopkeepers, and increased (very slightly) each time you talked to someone. That's where this idea came from (I think the QfG games were some of the best made, and if you know what my name means, you'll probably also guess I'm a fan of total annihilation who gets it?) anyway, back to topic, using this system you'd probably only get 1XP for each time you click on a conversation item. This sounds like it'd be very hard to advance in the skill, but really, it isn't. going back to QfG examples, some skills (like communication) you could put an eggtimer or any other heavy enough object on the <enter> key and go for a walk... come back and it'd be night time, but your skill would be maxed out. do it in EL, and you'll have a lot of people using an autoclicker while AFK, or, at least, AFW* It'd be nice to have this as part of a possible barter system or something, but the work to try to stamp out abuse of it would be far greater spent somewhere else. I just don't think the payoff is there. And if the system doesn't have any use other than a top50 type setup, you'll get most people not caring, and a few trying to max it out, either copy'n'paste in channel/local or autoclicking NPCs * Away From Window: still at the computer, but doing other things; forums, email, homework, whatever
  14. Chating Xp

yes, force words to come from a dictionary, and they'll have copy'n'paste from a dictionary. Force it to be able to go through a grammar checker to make sure it's not random words, and they'll copy lines from random websites. it just won't work, the amount of work to make the computer smart enough can be much better applied
  15. Kill Summons

in summoning, I'm still a newbie, so I summon rats and rabbits south of beam, and invite newbies to come kill them 8^) you could do the same with tougher people for wolves, there's often complaints about not enough spawns
  16. He's In His Happy Place

This is in white, because it may be in bad taste. Only highlight if you wanna see it. You've been warned. So it'd be a bad time for a joke like: Q: What's the difference between a white baby and a black baby? A: 5 min in a microwave ? (sorry, couldn't resist)
  17. RE: Perspective view

can't seem to change pitch (up/down arrow keys) and the zoom kinda seems like it's not going as far as usual. looks nice, including the rain, however the rain's really bucketing down... how much work would it be to have the server say how heavy it's raining, so you can get lighter showers?
  18. Transfering

    Previously suggested
  19. Things Guys Wish Girls New

and also solve the problem in the mornings... it's probably just a cost/space issue, else it would be done
  20. Pass On A Message

While both parts true, the 2nd point was already covered by the "if you know the persons' forum name" part
  21. About Pickaxe Suggestion

Because that's already been done, and we can do better! nothing wrong with appropriating ideas from other games, though the frequency that the 'other game' is runescape tends to be too high
  22. Chating Xp

Ack, just because I post a lot, it don't mean I spam... (currently 2nd on the daily list posted)
  23. XML format

okay, I updated the tool, should be one external change a lot of internal ones. External change: anything in extended ascii is now 'shrunk' back to the normal alphabet. Internal: lotsa little changes, should make it easier to modify and update also, another issue... In Saii's story, there's use of underlines, bold, etc... is there support for this in the XML? and tables(especially useful for diary type stuff, dates in one column, entries int he other)?
  24. XML format

The one CK refered to? If so, I just found out what that problem is, the original text had characters beyond ASCII (as in, not normal letters), that's the issue. not sure what the right solution here is, probably convert them back to ASCII... unless EL will be able to handle those characters, any developers able to let me know? erm... uhh... because I goofed, probably. I'll get that fixed up shortly, thanks <edit> yeah, I goofed, but not where I thought... I set it up so one newline means new <para>, two means a new <text>... then bright me forgot about that when copy/pasting... the current list of chapter/section things is probably a bit safer to use, but a lot more work to copy paste... the alternative is one long area to paste it all, but then the person writing it up has to put in commands like <title> or <section> and such... which would be prefered?
  25. XML format

If there's an error, I'd like to catch it, unless it's a spelling one in the test itself (I just copy/pasted in slabs), where abouts is it? as for text/para split stuff, I dunno, it just seems close to what was in the encyclopedia example, so I went with that
