  1. Should there be two Ant colonies?

Learner, What sort of donation do you need? Cash? Server space? I like the idea of competing colonies. Especially if there's something particular they're competing over, like maybe a picnic. Dave
  2. Ok, should the cooldowns stay or not?

Yes, keep the cooldowns. (Feel free to ignore this vote. Reasons in PM.)
  3. Realism

I've chipped the face of an inexpensive hammer. You -could- accuse me of mistreating it, though, because the spikes I was driving at the time really needed a bigger hammer. I think hammers in the game could realistically be expected to break because they're used in smithing. It's not like we're driving nails in wood. We're beating a piece of metal with another piece of metal. Dave
  4. New harvest events

I thought armor didn't protect against harvest events that cause damage. It helps against radiation? Dave
  5. All OuT WAR!

Oops - please remove Maddad from the list. Dave
  6. An idea for more excitment to the game!

Newbies die already at the hands of the Whitestone gargoyles and Portland goblins, not to mention Mother Nature using lethal force to defend her lilacs. (I nearly quit over that myself. Bee stings to discourage AFK harvesting are one thing; making me lose an hour's flowers was uncalled for. But that's another rant.) At least under the proposed change newbies that previously couldn't afford the Monster Magnetism perk or cape have some hope now. Dave
  7. An idea for more excitment to the game!

Perfect! I was thinking "charisma" from my D&D days - I couldn't remember the equivalent attribute here. It opens up a whole new set of potential curses, too. Setting someone's charm to 0 would render the amulets useless. How are attacks by current monsters on non-MM players decided now? Is there a fixed probability, or can it be modified by player characteristics? Dave
  8. An idea for more excitment to the game!

Maybe make the effect's duration depend on the player's level. Basing it on an attribute or nexus would probably be better. That way the player has to spend pickpoints for the increase. Sort of like getting the MM perk now, except in stages instead of plunking down 5 pp in an all-or-nothing deal. I like the idea generally, but how would a player recognize an aggressive monster vs. a regular one? Or should we assume every monster is potentially aggressive? Dave
  9. All OuT WAR!

Folks, Please sign up misunderstood for the event. I'd sign up myself, but he'd probably hunt me down and hurt me. Dave
  10. Random days

I think it's a great idea. Any world that is so intimately connected with its gods needs frequent Acts of teh Godz to keep the worshippers guessing. (Grin) I think 15% odds (would correspond to about once per week if the game tracked weeks) would be a little better. It's a role-playing game after all, not a disaster movie. And although it may hurt, I'm going to agree that bad days should outnumber good days. The game should be challenging. I nominate "Mother Nature's Day Off" as one of the possible good days. It'd be nice to go a day without a wall collapsing somewhere. Bad days might include "tax day," where every time you pass though a door, portal, or change maps you lose a gc (or some percentage of the gold you're carrying). Dave
  11. The Eternal Race

Congratulations to all who placed. How long did the race last? Dave
  12. All OuT WAR!

Yes, definitely a good day to die. Dave
  13. The Eternal Race

Please sign up misunderstood. He doesn't have a forum account but he'd like to participate. Dave
  14. How old are you?

I'm 45, and my son is 9. And he can kick my bottom in a fair fight. But I can cut off his Internet connection. "Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill." Dave
  15. How powerful ARE ya?

I think we have a winner. Dave
  16. How powerful ARE ya?

I'm so powerful that gargoyles' eyes water when I move upwind. (Maybe installing a shower in the diamond mine would be a good idea.)
  17. making a trade bot

A bot starts out as a normal character. You create it, play it, level it, etc. until you're ready to register it as a bot. You register it by clicking the "Register your Bot" button at the top of any forum page and filling in the form. Eventually someone will review it and, if you've given the proper information, approve it. Once the bot is approved you can use a program running on a computer somewhere to log in as the bot's character. I my case, The_Bard in WSC is controlled by a program running on a computer in my home. For the bot to be available all the time, the computer it runs on must be up and connected all the time. This thread has links to some available bot programs: Bot thread I believe they'll all need some customization to do exactly what you want. I used the redknight code as an example, but wrote my own code from the bottom up. (I didn't need trade functions.) Some of the code may need further tweaking because of the recent client and server updates. After your bot is approved and while you're working on the program, you need to use the EL test server (port 2001 as opposed to the normal port 2000). A bot can make an excellent spam generator - usually by accident - and the Powers That Be won't stand for that on the main server. Dave
  18. what the hell is pleteretherhter?

Aww, how disappointing. I thought someone had finally figured uot how to spell the sound of a razzberry. (Or Bronx Cheer, or whatever you call it in your part of the world.)
  19. Favorite Gnome Recipe

Q: How many gnomes does it take to roof a house? A: Depends on how thinly you slice them. Here's a recipe from my Scouting days. It was originally for alligator, but it works for just about any large piece of tough meat. (Perhaps even a dwarf.) Campfire-Broiled Gnome Ingredients: 1 medium gnome 2 onions, quartered 1 bunch carrots, diced 1 head celery, diced 40 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 6 apples, quartered salt, pepper, other seasonings to taste. flour Equipment: wooden plank (maple is preferred, but any hardwood with a neutral taste will do. Avoid evergreen) Large pan (or aluminum foil) Preparation: Remove skin from gnome. Remove organ meat and wash cavity thoroughly. Stuff with onions, carrots, celery, garlic, and apples. Season inside and outside. Nail to plank with iron nails. Prop plank next to campfire with meat toward fire. Place pan (formed from foil if necessary) under meat to catch drippings. Keep fire roaring hot for at least 4 hours. (Assign Tenderfoots (newbies) to gather firewood. Tell them they'll get a merit badge. They always fall for that.) Baste meat every 15 minutes with pan drippings to prevent drying. Meat is done when twisting a limb causes it to fall off. Remove plank from fire and allow meat to rest covered for ten minutes. Add flour to pan drippings, cook over coals to make gravy. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove meat from plank and throw it in the fire. Cover plank with gravy and serve with steamed vegetables. Serves 12
  20. Automated Saving

Is it really necessary to log off and back on to save? If not, maybe autosaving every time the character passes through a doorway, cave entrance, or sign would be feasible. It takes a little more effort to do it intentionally so not many people would try to do it every minute, but during normal game play there are a lot of opportunities. Comparing a character's current state to the state at the last save would show if a save is really necessary. That would help reduce disk I/O. Dave
  21. EL court

I've thought for some time now that we should have public stocks (like this )in the game. A convicted character could be restrained by the server in a fixed location, usually in the middle of a town. His sentence would be to remain there for some decreed period of time in-game. (Like reading a book - you have to be logged in.) Since public humiliation is an integral part of this kind of punishment, his ignore list would be suspended for the duration of his sentence so he'd have to listen to the taunts of the other players. Of course, now that I've suggested it, I'll probably be one of the first to get to try it out when it' s implemented. Like they say, "No good deed goes unpunished." Dave
  22. Woo000oooo

+forest chimmys, grizzly bears, black bears, and the leapords are 2 different kinds i also saw a panda in the meshes folder i dont think its in game yet though 213162[/snapback] Pandas are in the game. I saw one a day or two ago. Looks like more material points than the average bear. The Arctic chim is one bad muth... um... well, let's say nobody understands him but his woman. He also disregards monster magnetism. (sniff... another quarterstaff gone.) Dave
  23. Channel List?

    [Maddad bows in gratitude.]
  24. Channel List?

    Perhaps 117 then? Dave
  25. Channel List?

Could I request a channel for my storybot? He reads stories on request, but I don't want to spam the local talk in Whitestone City near the flower shop. I thought about using channel 105, but I see from the list it's already reserved. Would 17 be okay? Dave
