  1. Trouble from below

Strange tidings are coming from the Dwarven Miners Guild... members have been reporting of strange growls heard from the depths in both Seridia and Irilion, mysterious collapses of new tunnels being dug, and a few workers have gone missing without traces.

The Guild Council has launched an inquiry... but the inquiry party disappeared on their first inspection - except for a single survivor... shocked, trembling, babbling, the poor wreck of a dwarf keeps repeating: "No... not there... no... not there..."

You like trouble? Then, be prepared. Something will start breeding in the mines, caves, and underground places of Draia. Caves in Seridia will be capped as announced in-game; caves in Irilion are for you to explore.

We will have a contest in the middle of the invasion... details will be posted in due time.

  2. It looks like you might have a firewall or antivirus blocking access to port 2000.

Hussam asked you to provide the output of the command

    tracert game.eternal-lands.com

Please run that command in a shell (on Windows, Start->Run...->cmd.exe or whatever they have in the latest and greatest version), copy the output, and paste it in a post in the forum. Until you provide that information, there is not much we can do - the problem is on your side, either on your PC, or router, or modem, or ISP. The character mcb is perfectly in order on the server.

  3. Our valiant Jonny88 reports that the Death sigil has the wrong name ("space") in the Spells window.

Problem: In fact, there is a typo in spells.xml:

    <Sigil_list>
       <sigil id="2" name="Space">space</sigil>
       ...
       <sigil id="25" name="Space">death</sigil>
    </Sigil_list>

    Solution: Change name="Space" to name="Death" in spells.xml.

So, here are our final scores:

  5. A contest for fighters... in a special un-magical sauce!

Strange tidings are coming from the Undying Lands. Amidst one of those neverending (or should I say, Eternal?) quarrels between Aluwen and Mortos during a Council of the Gods, Unolas rose in fury, and solemnly declared that they both were petty divinities, and that to him alone, and to the Art of Magic, should homage be paid by the most excellent warriors.

Needless to say, all Underworld broke lose at his words, with various Gods claiming supremacy: Selain in spite of Aluwen called upon an army of beasts, Xiao set to prove that his blessed darts could overcome any enemy, and Jayden in league with Zarin would try to ridicule Unolas by showing how their joint forces could eclipse whatever Unolas' followers could do.

With the Council ending in utmost confusion, only an agreement was reached: that on the following day, the Mortals would be asked to judge of Unolas' claim. Is really Magic the supreme skill? Is the bravest warrior only worth as much as Unolas favours him or her?

    The Contest

Contestants will have to face a number of waves of invasion creatures, starting from the very easy (rabbits) and going up to the serious ones. Every contestant is free to choose his or her own array of equipment (weapons, meds, rings, armour, capes, potions, etc.) - we will try to recover death bags, but cannot guarantee that they will be safe. It's up to each contestant to decide whether to go naked, go in full gear with a Rostogol stone for safety, or just rely on our no-guarantee DB saving service.

The fight will take place inside the Grubani Peninsula Archery Arena in Ywarstaw. In case you are not familiar with the surroundings, keep in mind that the Arena is a no-magic area - you cannot cast spells of any kind. Contestants will not have to pay an entrance ticket - that will be arranged by the organizers. The general public is welcome to come and watch the show from just outside the arena; you might need a Monster Magnetism cape or perk if your combat level is below 265 (Mountain Chimerans are found on the map). Anyone entering the arena uninvited will be duly expelled.

Your score will be based on how many waves you completely clear (before dying, that is).

    Leagues

We will have multiple leagues, so that mid-level players also get a chance. Leagues will be based on the sum of Attack+Defense skills, and broadly following the instances levels, namely:

    1. n00b league: 60-80 A/D
    2. advanced league: 80-100 A/D
    3. almost-pr0 league: 100-120 A/D
    4. pr0 league: 120-150 A/D
    5. WTF league: 150+ A/D

The winner in each league will get to pick one item of his choice from the prizes pool (in reverse order: the WTF league winner gets to choose first); in case of ties, we can allow multiple prizes, or organize a quick tie break depending on the circumstances (and on the final number of prizes).

There will be a final party, in team mode, for players below 60 A/D to also fight in the contest, but we cannot guarantee prizes at this stage. Update: LittleLooter offered to draw a custom cape of their choice to the winner(s?) of the under-60 match, specs to be agreed upon privately.

    Prizes

All prizes kindly donated by Kragnus (with some help from SirPantalone), except as noted otherwise:

    • 1 s2e of thermal
    • 1 iron sword of fire
    • 2 s2e of fire
    • 1 s2e of magic
    • 1 jagged saber
    • 1 frying pan
    • 1 recurve bow (donated by Yethq)
    • 1 long bow (donated by biffbafflemore)
    • 1 EFE (donated by Lorlen)
    • 2 oranges (donated by Lorlen)
    • 2 Rostogol stones (donated by Maxine)

If any of you feels particularly generous, we will be accepting further donations for the event! (I will keep this post up to date if more prizes are offered).

    Registration, timing, logistics

To help running thing smoothly, please post in this thread your intention to participate; your in-game name and which league you are registering for will be sufficient. We will accept registrations also in-game and to the last minute, but I would appreciate your cooperation...

The contest will start at 0:30, on daybreak. If you want to take part, but cannot travel to the Arena (and don't want to use a MM cape), PM me and you will be teleported there at the appropriate time, skipping the monsters-infested regions of Grubani. Spectators are welcome, but will have to arrange their travel schedule and equipment by themselves! :)

There will be running commentary on Channel 7 (Events). I reserve the right to disqualify or boot (or worse) people exhibiting uncooperative behaviour.

    Jun 3 09:06:39 efra kernel: [ 2933.278742] el.x86.linux.bi[2755]: segfault at 5f8 ip 00f2fe10 sp bfd0baf0 error 4 in libdricore.so[dac000+1db000]

libricore is part of the Direct Rendering Infrastructure, so it seems the problem is most probably with your OpenGL implementation (i.e., the gfx driver). You might want to try the following:

    1. disable DRI in xorg.conf and see if the game runs at all (with any decent speed, that is)
    2. try upgrading your gfx driver to the most recent available version
    3. try to use an alternate graphics driver for your hardware -- e.g., several cards have both an open-source driver and a proprietary driver (usually the latter is faster and better tested, but it "taints" the kernel due to its non-free license)
    4. try retro-grading your current driver to a previous version, it is not uncommon for older versions to work better than newer ones
    5. try installing a different kernel version; some drivers are rather fussy about which kernel they link into.

  7. Now, I had originally intended to lift the lock on Buzz (none of your other characters had been locked) after this discussion, provided you could assure me that you would not try to mislead new players in the future. Can you provide me such assurance?

I had, in fact, noticed that my IP wasn't locked, and I suppose thanks are in order. I admitted twice that I knew my actions were uncouth, and once that I wouldn't do that sort of thing again. What more assurance can I provide?

No need for more assurance; I am satisfied that you have understood where the problem was, and that you now have a better appreciation of where the line separating sense of humor from causing discomfort to other players lies.

Regarding all your other questions (e.g., whether mods are subject to in-game rules, what the difference between rules and modding guidelines is, whether I do smile ever, etc.) -- I will be available in-game for discussing these. Based on the depth and civil tone of your posts, I guess we could even go well together. Incidentally, yes - I have served in the military.

Buzz is unlocked, no other character was affected, and rest assured that there is nothing personal on my part.

  8. from chat_log.txt: (irrelevant chat removed)

[19:56:00] [buzz @ 1]: wow sweet a gold cheat! hold ctrl and type: QUICKCASH

    [19:56:25] [buzz @ 1]: muahaha!

    2) After careful examination of the rules, I found no rule that says 'Thou shalt not be a jerk' or even 'Thou shalt not play pranks'. So what rule exactly did I break?

You violated rules 3 (Do not patronize, mislead, or take advantage of people as they become acquainted with the environment and make beginner's mistakes), 25 (Do not cause problems on purpose that require the attention of the moderators) and 27.1.1 (The Newbie Help Channel is for newbie questions and answers only). The fact that you were shown rule 6 was, in fact, a technical error.

Interestingly, the very same page you quote in reference to warnings, lists "2. The purpose of Newbie Help channel is just that, newbie help. It does not matter if a newbie is asking a question or not at that time, it is still ONLY newbie help. It is up to the moderator(s) in the channel to keep it that way." Sad that you missed it in your careful examination of the rules.

It was pretty clear from your actions (especially the "muahaha") that you were perfectly conscious that your stupid "joke" was aimed at causing discomfort to others, and in particular to new players (since you posted on @1, of all 2 billion channels). Let me state this very clearly: if you plan to have fun of that sort, especially at the expenses of newbies, you are not welcome to stay in this game.

    3) Exactly 8 seconds from my last post, I was banned, without warning or any form of communication whatsoever. I feel I should have been warned at the very least.

Since you have had by now a good chance of perusing the rules, you will have noticed that the guidelines about warnings are exactly that - guidelines. I am sure you have noticed by now the "Overall, we should [give a warning first]". I am also sure you noticed the "There is a HUGE difference between the random offense or unintended offense [...]". In your case, the offense was totally intentional.

For these reasons, I request that my ban be reviewed and lifted, and that the Mod who banned me be reprimanded. Just because you have the BanHammer does NOT mean you should hit players with it willy-nilly.

It is unfortunate for you that I am generally known to be extremely tolerant and lenient. In fact, yours was not intended to be the standard 1-month ban, but a stopgap measure to avoid further trouble from you (or any of your alts - a subject that we might want to discuss separately at some point) until I could talk to you and ensure that we will not have reasons to regret your presence in-game in the future (as in the past).

Now, I had originally intended to lift the lock on Buzz (none of your other characters had been locked) after this discussion, provided you could assure me that you would not try to mislead new players in the future. Can you provide me such assurance?

On a different front, I do not want to interfere with your appeal to Aislinn for my reprimand, so another option is to leave things as they are until that one is decided. Just a quick note: in so doing, you violated also rule 27 (Moderation is never a topic for public discussion); technically you were supposed to file a complaint against my judgement to Aislinn via a private message. However, I personally have no problems with my judgement being questioned in public, and also I am on that in a clear conflict of interest, so I will take no actions on that respect.

  9. I highly doubt Google would reject it, since they are not Apple. But my understanding is that people can download Android programs from websites, without going through the google market thingy, right?

Correct. However, in order to install APKs from other sources (i.e., not the Android Market nor any bloatware market the maker of a particular phone or tablet has pre-installed on you thingie), the user has to enable a (fairly visible) checkmark in the Settings.

Overall, the entire process is much easier than, say, installing the desktop version.

  10. but you didn't even intend to make a contest for real, since only 2 people can win

Those two people were offline at the time, by the way (it was checked on the spot).

Good for Morath that I'm replying to you, not to him, or my reply would have costed him another +1 day.

  11. You violated rule 26.7.1, 26.7.2 and 26.7.3.

You started a public contest, then when I informed you that it was acceptable to bar someone from winning your contest, but it had to be mentioned at the beginning, you excluded everyone except krazykiller, iZu, rat. At the time of the contest, only krazykiller, among these three, was online.

So, in essence, you were trying to run on a public channel a contest which only one specific player could win. That doesn't fit the definition of a public contest, hence your contest was judged fake.

In consideration of the minor nature of the offense, and of the fact that prompt action on my part had avoided any damage to other players, you were awarded an exceptionally mild 2-days ban. To that, we are now adding 1 day for the time I just spent in telling you what you already know pretty well, per rule 25.

  12. hello

can,t connect to server, was i band? i did nothing wrong that i know of. please help. thanks

No, Jesse31 was not banned. I would suspect some networking trouble; try the command

    ping game.eternal-lands.com

    or

    telnet game.eternal-lands.com 2000

If these commands return an error, then you cannot connect to the server because of a networking failure somewhere (that could well be a transient failure). If they give you some output, then you can connect to the server, in which case we can look for some other cause... but first, try making sure it is not a new antivirus or firewall blocking your Internet connection.

  13. Maybe you can set a lower resolution, e.g. 800x600, so that you can edit your character appearance?

If you are running on a non-standard resolution (e.g., 1024x600 as in some netbook), you might have to set the exact resolution you need in the fields "Userdefined width" and "Userdefined height" in the "Video" tab of the option, after that set Video mode to "Userdefined". That might help.

Still, we need to know the details of your graphics card/chip/driver (versions etc.)... If you can get into the game, you can try typing the command "#glinfo", then copy here the first 5 lines or so. That should at least provide some hint.

    Good luck!

  14. sorry, i forgot to give info :(

Debian linux Squeeze (newest kernel) with ati graphics card. openGL is on and working on other games. Toshiba labtop,3G ram, amd64 duelcore. maybe i did not uninstall the game right? i simply deleted the folder it was running from. it ran great first time, then i adjusted the graphic size for my screen.

Maybe your video driver behaves strangely with OpenGL windows larger than 1024 or 1280 pixels? Can you launch the client, then before logging in, click on the Options button and set your window size to something smaller, e.g. 1024x768? If that works, we can work up from there. Let us know. Posting a screenshot of the screen with the triangles might also provide some clue.

  15. The problem seems to be related to graphics driver, but it is impossible to know what is going on without further info. As Korrode already suggested, we need at least to know which graphics card/drivers you are using (make, model, version numbers, etc.)...

  16. i need help how do u start playing i created a account i just dont know how to play :(

Well, if you haven't done so already, you need to download and install the game client, from this page (click and follow the instructions for your operating system). Once this is done, launch the client and create a new character. Once you are in-game, just type "@" followed by a message to ask for help - in case something is not working.

If for some reason you cannot install the client, or you have installed it but you can't create a character and enter the game, post here what's going on (all your steps and what you see on-screen) and we will try to help.

    Happy playing!

Congratulations to all the participants, and hope you had a good time! :icon13:

  18. The best advice I can give is to level any skill in a way that keeps the game fun for you. As soon as you start to feel stressed/pressured or if it starts to not be fun anymore then take a look at how you're doing things. Make adjustments to keep things fun and not so much of a grind.

That's wise advice. I stopped levelling Engineering when I was #3 explicitly to avoid "being sucked into" the #1 race! :)

I had learnt from CelticLady's signature... "No more leather helms" :D

  19. While the idea is fine, keep in mind that the code of a number of bots and other services (e.g., web sites, or the Android widget) would have to be adjusted if the actual message is changed. So, instead of

  20. As I see it, achievements are the in-game equivalent of fame, i.e. public knowledge. Like, when the rumor spreads after you have been seen eating tons of mushrooms, or maybe your Master Crafter achievement is published by the local newspaper on the day of your graduation... and in fact, achievements are sort of fact-of-life, not something you choose to get.

So, overall, I think the current system is fine... you can't hide those calluses on your pickaxe hand when someone comes close enough to you to inspect your achievements. :pickaxe:

  21. No one mentioned it, so I will add: have a global quest where you have to carry (globally) a certain large amount of dung to an NPC. When you succeed, veggies, fruit and toads will give 20, 25 and 15 food respectively (instead of 15, 20 and 10 as usual) for the month.

  22. Mortos, Aluwen, Lucaa, Elandria, Unolas, Jayden, Glilin, Selain, Zarin, LaForge, Galienne, Xiao: Twelve are the Gods that rule our lands, and the Sisters of No Mercy have organized twelve human / elvish / dwarven / draegoni / orchan / gnomish sacrifices in dark places of Irilion to please the Gods and increase their mana - and influence in the businesses of Draia. The bravest among you might want to foil their attempt. Others, beware!

12 caves across Irillion have been filled with different types of monsters, from rats and spiders to the very big bad meanies. Can you find them? More importantly, can you survive them, or will you be one of the human (etc.) sacrifices of the Sisters of No Mercy?

Some of the caves included interesting strategic problems, brain not included so BYO. :)

I hope you had fun; any advice/suggestion/reasonable complaint is welcome - just post here!
