  1. EL flickers (Ubuntu hardy)

    I installed EL (both with a deb package and from the zip file and the result is the same) the screen flickers like crazy. I use a Ubuntu with proprietary drivers for my ATI RADEON 9600 card. I tried ALL the options in the options menu - no difference... any ideas?
  2. I tried to install it via synaptic, all went well until i tried to start it from the menu. A window popped up with an empty list of servers and that's about as far as I got...
  3. Rotating minimap

    I agree that the current map is too tiny. Most people these days with modern computers, as required to play EL, have monitors with high resolutions. Hence there should be either an option to use a larger version of the minimap or the minimap should become scale-able.
  4. which linux to use for el?

    If you downloaded the ubuntu iso and burned it on a CD, then you automatically have an Ubuntu LIVE CD. Meaning once you insert it in your PC and reboot, it will automatically boot Ubuntu from that CD (after you selected that option in the bootmanager). This is the best way to see if the OS actually works on your PC. Once you are on the Ubuntu Desktop click on the "Install" Icon. A window will pop up straight on your desktop guiding you through the installation process. It will only take several minutes and is even less complicated than installing Windows XP! That said I believe you should definately try Ubuntu. I used OpenSuse before and while it is a great OS with an easy installation, Ubuntu is even easier to install. However for an end-user the actual differences are mariginal.

  7. New EL engine test

    System: Intel Centrino Pentium-M 1,86 GHZ 1 GB DDR2 RAM NVIDIA GeForce GO 6600 Windows XP SP3 with config/quality_low.xml All three maps work fine, both with day and night lighting. Framerate at about 45-50 FPS in F3 mode. with config/quality_medium.xml I can only check the height map, when I press F1 or F3 the application closes immediately without any warning and entry in the error log with config/quality_high.xml Everything works perfectly. Framerate at about 15-20 FPS (except with F2 where it is much higher). Other than that I'm experiencing all the issues you mentioned in your initial statement. Anything else that needs to be tested?
  8. Which part of the brain do you use more?

    I opened it in Adobe Imageready and it is clockwise. If you see it the other way around that's just an optical illusion. I manage to see it both ways, but easier the clockwise way. edit: the reason this optical illusion works is that the pictures shows a person that is spinning counter-clockwise, but then it was reversed for the animation.

  10. Clarification about rule 5 and RL $$

    I totally agree with these rules. If it's not allowed to benefit from another char, why the hell should it be allowed to do it via rl money? Either abolish the rule nr. 5 at all or enforce it imho.

    In a way I totally agree, the only problem is, while tours are usually a one time thing, quests are here to stay.

    dang, the custom maps I just wrote #cls because the screen was so full of text with the low resolution I used that I couldn't see much, but you are right Roja. About the flickering. I know it's really annoying, but it's somehow a problem of the compression I used with the screencapturing tool. When I didn't use a compression, then the quality is perfect, but a 5 second video was about 500MB :S I will see what I can do to improve the quality. Maybe someone who is more experienced with video creation and editing has some usefull hints for me?

    I didn't completely think this through, but wouldn't that be a good thing? I mean as in encouraging teamed efforts to take creatures down. As far as I remember these strong creatures were always intended to be ganged.

    I strongly disagree. If it were like that EL would be a tabular calculation and not a game. If it was simply a question of how many orcs/fluffies/etc you killed to make that little skill number rise, it wouldn't be a game anymore. While I agree with you that PK was different, speaking from my own experience, we can't go back to that stage. Back then I went into KF with 30 a/d and there was always someone to fight. It's different now and a lot of factors contributed to this. In addition I want to remind you that back then we didn't have attributes cap and soon PK became a p/c fest... Things change, not only in EL but also in the real world. We all knew that this game is BETA and even final versions of games tend to change via patches etc. What I'm saying is: Just because a certain player is the best now because of how the game used to work in the past, doesn't mean the game shouldn't be changed so NEW players or other players have more fun/options/variety/etc. And back on topic: If I choose to be an allrounder in EL, I will never be a full pker, simply because I need many pp for other stuff. A manufacturer or crafter needs a decent amount of pp in the according nexus, etc. So every decision in EL comes with a cost. The same should be applied to magic. The number one priority should be: make magic a full trade (skill) and no longer have it as a sub skill of fighting. In order to do that it should be assured that: 1) a decent number of pp should be put in a nexus (as i suggested before) associated with magic or put in attributes associated with magic (as Schmurk suggested) 2) that current pkers will not automatically be mages Number 2 is really important! Why? Just think about what would happen if everyone could use a "BREAK IM" spell right now... some people described it before. It would harm the game a lot. Hence these spells should only be casted by people who als put some effort (see 1)). Additionally we will need more spells for mages, especially such which affect and area and not only a person, otherwise the possibilities of mages will always be quite limited.

    What about this: If your magic nexus is 5 then your spells have a 75% chance of breaking the opponents magic immunity.

    I totally agree that spells should require magic nexus. Spells such as Heal and Remote Heal wouldn't require the nexus, however advanced spells would need quite some pp put into magic nexus, e.g. Restore, TPTPR = 2 magic nexus;Magic Immunity = 3 Magic Nexus etc. It's a perfect solution: a) High level fighters won't automatically be mages anymore. They will have to carefully think how much pp they can afford to put into this nexus Magic will become a skill similar to the others, not only a supporting one, but one that you will carefully plan and level

  23. The homepage of el looks bland

    I think the homepage looks really good since the last makeover. However it could use some updates contentwise. Also new client versions or huge updates could be advertised more prominently and directly on the website instead of just linking to the news section of the forum. imho.

  25. Mines, and a new perk

    I only partly agree. Just look at these perks: a) godless: really a negative perk, especially in the beginning. You might not realize it at first, but with it you loose quite some exp. i can't dance: if you don't pk or don't train a/d it's free pickpoints, but for a fighter it's absolutely negative c) see d) antisocial: MAJOR annoyance - I speak from experience etc. It always depends on how you play. Currently some of the neg perks only really affect fighters, however I'm sure there are others that I didn't think about which are bad for other skills. EL is already a pretty complex and hard game, compared to others, I really don't think that the neg perks make your life ingame easier. Only sometimes you get a bonus - which has a cost, because it basically limits your prospects and choices of skills of the future.
