  1. Thanks bluap! Using it now on Arch, and everything seems to be working great. I finally came back to EL after too long away (mostly due to RL complications...), and was having trouble getting sound to work using the installer on the EL downloads page (had it working fine using that on my previous Arch laptop & desktop). Saw your Flatpak package and installed it, and sound came right up.

  5. Picks! reloaded

Sorry to be so late posting - haven't been on the forums enough lately! Wow, this is a lot harder on the guessing side, and it seems the best options for most and least go fast... here goes nothing! - Day: 18 March - Total stones: 75 - Total items: 9,000,000 - harvested less: black rose (wanted to say tin ore...) - harvested more: cotton (wanted to say iron ore...) Riphath:pickaxe:
  6. Global Quest FAQ

I am trying to make a special potion. I need 70000 Black Dragon Scale of which I have 69880, 1200 Amber and I have 645, 3 Pear of which I already have 1, and finally, 25 Orange of which I already have 21. Many, many thanks to radu for his very generous donation!
  7. Picks!

Contest ended. *CRACK!* The sound of pickaxes breaking down here is so common that you don't even notice it at first, but then the normally-quiet dwarf in the corner starts grumbling up a thunderstorm, and you look over just in time to see him hurl what's left of his pickaxe against the cavern wall. It's hard to understand much of his mumbling, but you are able to pick up a few words here and there: grumblegoodfonuthinmumblelousygruntwalmart*crash*PICKS!!1 Once he calms down a bit, he tells you that he just broke his 1,000th pickaxe. He seems to think that "they" have been weakening the picks by thinning out the iron in the pick heads with some type of organic substance (probably derived from fruitcakes) and not properly curing the handles, and that there's some big conspiracy to cover it up involving corporate bribes going all the way to teh Top Dog himself. You figure the poor fellow has probably just spent so much time underground pounding his eardrums out that he's a few boulders short of a rockslide, so you think nothing else of it and get back to work. That is, until you see his announcement on the bulletin board back at storage. Apparently, he wants to give away his "good-for-nothing" picks and start fresh, but has decided to make a contest out of it. Now you're really wondering about this poor fellow's sanity - actually keep a count of how much ore he's dug up? 235, 236, 237... wow. You'll have to remember to ask Aurora if she can recommend a good mental hospital. If nothing else, Edlera might have some 'natural remedy' that would take the worries of life off his mind... Contest: Guess how many of each I (Riphath) had in my counters2 when my broken pickaxe counter hit 1,000 ('twas about 2 weeks ago now, but RL got in the way of this contest). The person with the closest guess for each item below wins free pickaxes3 as follows: 1. Total Iron+Silver+Coal ... 200 Picks (3,000 gc value) Raistlin 2. Iron Ore ........................ 100 Picks (1,500 gc value) arxan 3. Coal ............................. 100 Picks (1,500 gc value) Olorandir 4. Silver Ore ....................... 50 Picks (750 gc value) arxan 5. Total Stones ................... 50 Picks (750 gc value) arxan Rules and Eligibility: -> Contest will end at 1200 Zulu on 20 September 2011 http://www.timeandda...iso=20110920T12 -> In the event of a tie in any category, the first of those guesses will be the winner. -> Not all characters are eligible to participate.4 -> Guesses must be posted in this thread with the in-game name of the character submitting the guess (if different from the forum account name) -> Only 1 entry per forum account (entry may only include up to 1 guess for each of the 5 categories, though each of these guesses may be attributed to different in-game characters) -> Guesses must be no closer than 1% to previous guesses (e.g. if Frukas has already guessed that I had 100,000 iron ore in my counters, then Salina cannot post a guess for iron ore between 99,000 and 101,000) -> IMPORTANT: Editing your post when someone else has already posted after you in this competition will disqualify your forum account from the competition. Information that might (or might not) help: -> These are the top 3 resources in my counters that require a pickaxe to harvest. -> My counters for all other pickaxe harvestables combined total less than 1/10 of my iron/silver/coal total. -> All of my pickaxe breakages are from normal harvesting events -> Not all of my stones came from these three resources, but the clear majority of them did -> My top 3 non-pickaxe harvestable counters combined total just over 1 million, but only one of them is in my top 3 overall (side-challenge: the first person to guess what this harvestable is will win a bonus of 1k of it) -> I am not in the habit of selling harvestables I will determine the winners as soon as I am able after the contest ends. Winners will be announced here, and I coordinate delivery of prizes to them in-game if possible, or via forum pm if they are not on when I am. Riphath Fine print at the bottom of the page: 1All 'grumblings' are solely for the sake of storyline, and should not be interpreted as comments/complaints about break rates in EL. 2Note that all numbers are based on counters, not total harvests/breakages - many counts have been lost due to a laptop that likes to overheat and shut down or just randomly reboot. I do, however, believe that the lost counts represent only a relatively small percentage of my total harvests/breakages. 3The manufacturer offers no warranty, express or implied, on the workmanship or quality of these pickaxes, except as otherwise required by law in the legal jurisdiction of Sir Calaway's choosing. 4Characters ineligible due to the clash between how they have decided to play EL and interact with others here and how I have decided to do so are: current and former members of guilds YARR, NH and HmLm/HIGH/p0rc/.../.../...
  8. Picks!

Contest closed, actual numbers and results as follows (winner and their guess in green): 1. Total Iron+Silver+Coal ... 1,441,063 Raistlin (1,439,221) 2. Iron Ore ........................ 798,856 arxan (826,000) 3. Coal ............................. 551,835 Olorandir (563,281) 4. Silver Ore ....................... 90,372 arxan (331,000) 5. Total Stones ................... 55 arxan (54) Top non-pick harvestable: Red Roses (at 367,892) nobody! Final tally: 200 picks each for Raistlin and arxan, 100 picks for Olorandir. To fully answer Zamirah's question, I am currently using harvester medallion #7 (when event frequency is low), so no I do not normally use them. Looking at the guesses, I had over 10% more than the average guess of iron ore and coal, but the closest guess to my silver ore count was more than 3.5 times the correct number, with the average being more than 7 times! This resulted in the average total being 25% high. Part of this may be due to an assumption that I use harv meds more than I actually do, but clearly people also expect me to spend more time in the silver mine. Krrick and arxan tied on the stones guess, but arxan guessed first. The average guess was 66 to my 55 - I guess I'm not as lucky as I thought! For the top non-pick harvestable, Sulfur and Red Snapdragons were just behind Red Roses, with Cotton and Toadstools being next, so most of you were very close. I must say, though, that I was surprised at how many people guessed something that had already been guessed... Thank you all for participating! Being my first contest, I wanted to do something relatively small and simple to try out some ideas and see how they worked out. If things continue to go well for me, then I will hopefully be putting what I've learned to use in another, more significant contest near the end of the year...
  9. Picks!

I hadn't thought to include this information, but I don't think answering it now would be fair to those of you that have already guessed. A lesson learned for myself and anyone else who runs a similar contest, I suppose - thanks! I find it quite interesting to see how the guesses are lining up (sometimes I think I should have gotten my degree in psychology instead of engineering). So far, one person is the closest for 3 categories (but the farthest away in at least one of the others), and one person is the closest for the other 2. Thanks for participating!
  10. Picks!

If you would like to complain about being excluded, then feel free to file a complaint in Disputes. If you don't like the size of my prizes, then feel free to host your own contest with bigger ones. If you just want to cause trouble, then you should go read the forum rules first (http://www.eternal-l...showtopic=13949 - I'd especially recommend reading rule 5, "Posts should be constructive in nature."), and then feel free to find another forum on which to do so. But, if you'd like to participate in a simple little contest for the fun of it, with the chance to win some simple little prizes in the spirit of the contest itself, then please feel free to join in!
  11. Global Quest FAQ

It appears that someone has decided to buy up all pears on the market right at the beginning of the Global Quest and charge those of us working for the community 50% more for them, expecting a quick payout! (Bought at 40kgc/ea, demanding 60kgc/ea minutes after buying them.) I donate lots of time harving and hauling for this, and am even willing to donate some GC for rare items, but will not reward such behavior with a single penny nor ask anyone else to do so. Please note - I have nothing against people making a profit on pears, just not in that manner. I'll happily harvest toes and toads for this global quest at my leisure (but not at a marathon pace like I usually do), and even more happily wait until more pears are found and either donated or sold with a more reasonable markup. Should the needed pears be donated or made available at a reasonable price, I'll happily jump back in, but until then, Riphath out.
  12. Global Quest FAQ

Ready to go for it again? No oranges this time! I am trying to make a special potion. I need 70000 Ogre Toes of which I have 0, 80000 Toadstool and I have 0, 3 Pear of which I already have 0, and finally, 7 Grapes of which I already have 0.
  13. Global Quest FAQ

And so it begins again... "I am trying to make a special potion. I need 70000 Ogre Toes of which I have 0, 90000 Vegetables and I have 0, 3 Pear of which I already have 0, and finally, 25 Orange of which I already have 0."
  14. I did a full write-up, but it was feeling more like a documentary (even if a humorous one), so I'll make this short: 1. I did not bag-jump iZu (one could say that I did bj nOser - but that is a dispute for him to bring if he so desires). 2. I did not 'steal' iZu's CoL, nor did I facilitate anyone else doing so. 3. Anything else that iZu has been saying about me is probably also at least a partial lie. As proof of my first claim, I submit the following statements from my log (if you really want to see the 2+ hours worth of logs relating to this, let me know): [17:52:47] nOser: i stole this bag ... [18:03:51] nOser: should have seen that one coming haha [18:03:55] nOser: thats how i got itr ... [18:07:53] nOser: thats like 10 bags i put togheter ... [18:14:48] #Ig [iZu:HIGH] if that dissaper. you guys have to pay for it. idc what you are going to say -.-' [18:14:57] nOser: lol dont care about izu [18:15:00] nOser: its not even his bag For my second claim, I will admit that it did not occur to me to take a screenshot until well after the first load of coal was on it's way to storage - I had ample time to trade it off to someone else. I guess this one is my word against his, but I'll post that screenshot anyway. (Everything that I brought in is in my Inventory, everything that was in the bag as I came into possession of it is in the bag, with the exception of 1 load of coal and 1 pair of keys. Any coal that I harved on that trip I added to the bag.) screenshot For my third claim, well, I submit that iZu's own guildy's statements have already demonstrated that iZu is a liar, without considering his record. If you hear any other allegations or rumors of 'bad' behavior on my part, please let me know so that I can correct either the allegation/rumor or my behavior.
  15. Global Quest FAQ

All Ogre Toes are harved and being hauled to the kitchen now.
  16. Defending my name from iZu's lies/rumours

I've never believed a word that he's said (and why should I, when his own guildy says "dont care about izu"? Wow, sounds like a healthy guild there, doesn't it?), but I have had a few people ask about things that he has said about this, so apparently a lot of people don't know him as well as nOser does. iZu's basically fuming over humiliation of having nOser lose his (nOser's) stolen goods while both iZu and Morath were standing right there with nOser. I don't imagine that most people who dislike bjing would consider recovering a bj'd bag to be bjing, but that's a question that we can debate if nOser decides to dispute my action. For those who have gotten the impression from iZu that I kept the contents of the bag that I removed from nOser's posession, I was unable to find any 'original' owners for the contents of the bag, so the entire contents were donated to the Badaran hunt.
  17. Trouble from below

I had lots of fun - thanks! ~340 kills from invasion but then again I am currently just below the cap, and couldn't get anyone to join me in a certain cave for a good while! Usl - my logs show that The_Knight posted his comment on caps about 25 minutes before your announcement of them edit: spelling :/
  18. Global Quest FAQ

Now we just need the following: 3 2 Pears 25 Oranges

  20. 1.9.2 Update

I put a spare HDD in my laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 + EL on it, so that I could test the difference in map-change times with all other specs held constant, and timed IP->WS on both, and then on SSD with bluap's patched binary. With the HDD, the first IP-WS change took slightly longer, but subsequent IP-WS changes took the same time as with the SSD - stopwatch showing 2.3s consistently for both drives. Using bluap's patch on the SSD, I found no measurable decrease in times - though the loading bar did not move nearly as smoothly as with the unpatched binary (the result of fewer updates). Thanks for trying, bluap! As much as I enjoyed split-second map changes, waiting an extra ~2s whenever I go to WS isn't going to negatively affect me in any way (it's good to slow down a bit every now and then...). I'm fine with sacrificing a little speed on my laptop so that the majority of players can gain a little. Now, can the next update slow down those with the fastest ping times just a little and speed up my 200-300ms times in exchange?
  21. 1.9.2 Update

loir - any chance you're using a SSD? I have also noticed a significant increase in the loading times, for every map that I've tried. Like for loir, it takes around 2.5-2.75s consistently to load WS - in 1.9.1, this change took less than 1s. That said, this same map change took several seconds in 1.9.1 before I upgraded my laptop's HDD to a SSD (switched from XP to Ubuntu at the same time), and I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that the optimizations that were done were geared toward computers with HDDs. Other system info: Ubuntu 10.10, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM
  22. Horray for Penguins!

I'll second that! Thanks for providing an excellent and very fun challenge... even if it was terribly frustrating and cost me much time that I would have otherwise spent doing more productive things in EL, sleeping, cleaning, and actually working at the office! And, uh, sorry for keeping Trustbot so busy... (I think I found a minor bug there, too).
  23. Concerning bagjumping

Rule #3 does not say that bagjumping/stealing is ok - it says that Rule #3 (Respect Others) does not apply to bagjumping/stealing. This seems to indicate to me that, while Rule #3 itself does not ban such activities, it leaves the door open for such activities to break other rules. That is why I am asking if, when taken too far, such activities can be done in such a manner that they violate Rule #2. No, it has nothing to do with rule #2. *tries again*. The bag situation is INTENTIONAL. It is not meant to be safe, it is meant to have risk. Death bags are intentional, the iffy nature of getting your stuff back is intentional. Using bags to mix is your choice of taking the risk. If you get bagjumped or your stuff gets stolen if you go off the bag for ANY reason, oh well, you chose the risk, you have to be willing to accept the consequences. Lag, grueing, mother nature teleports...that is ALL part of the risk. Rules 2 and 3 are NOT about game mechanics and bag risk IS game mechanics. That is why rule 3 mentions this does not apply to things such as spawns, bagjumping, etc. Intentionally so. Thanks - that answers my question (whether Rule #2 would ever apply). I completely agree - I'll say again that I was not trying to challenge bagjumping itself, just trying to find out if the manner in which a player went about bagjumping or interacting with the player that got jumped could violate Rule #2 (I had not been able to find this addressed elsewhere). What caused me to read Rule #2 with bagjumping in mind was a former bagjumper (now serving out a permaban) suggesting to me that my giving him a hard time over his behavior constituted harassment. (Mind you, there was no inappropriate language used by me nor was anything else done on my part could be construed to violate any part of any rule other than, to him, the "systematically and/or continually unwanted and annoying" clause in Rule #2.) Thanks for clearing this up!

  25. Concerning bagjumping

I know that there is not nor will there ever be any rule or policy against what I would call 'passive' bag-jumping. I agree with Aislinn's post completely and think that it is the way it ought to be. However, I do not believe that is what happened in this case. This sounds to have been what I would call 'active' bag-jumping - where the one doing the jumping has a well-known reputation for hanging out in mines with no intent of mining (as frequently proven by the lack of harvesting tools - and you cannot claim that you are there to kill skeles when you are in Zirakgunda), waiting for someone to hit a teleport nexus or otherwise vacate there bag so that s/he can t2r onto it and then boast of the 'feat' and demand ransom or sell off the contents on the market channel. I would like to know at what point, if ever, this behavior violates In-Game Rule #2, No Harassment, which states: "... or actions that are systematically and/or continually unwanted and annoying." When one goes from one mine to the next - harving nothing, killing nothing, and sometimes invisible - looking for people with bags and waiting with t2r armed for them to vacate their bag for any reason under the sun, does this cross the line into being an action that is systematically and/or continually unwanted and annoying? If not, then what actions do? Again, I am not referring to the common 'passive' bag-jumping - I only question whether/when the aggressive, systematic, in-your-face type of bag-jumping (such as the behavior that Blackbeard and his ilk advocate and practice) crosses the line into harassment.
