  1. Can't Install Game on Ubuntu 10.10

Greetings. Go here: https://launchpad.net/~pjbroad/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=maverick and follow the instructions about adding the PPA to your system. If added correctly, you can then install the game via apt-get or more conveniently via synaptic. Cheers, Elgoran.
  2. Programing the first EL client

    Yeah, seems things were really quite a bit more complicated back then. Nowadays for such a simple program, all you have to do is type: #!/usr/bin/env python from math import * print "".join([chr(int(round(96.75 + -21.98*cos(x*1.118) + 13.29*sin(x*1.118) + -8.387*cos(2*x*1.118)\ + 17.94*sin(2*x*1.118) + 1.265*cos(3*x*1.118) + 16.58*sin(3*x*1.118)\ + 3.988*cos(4*x*1.118) + 8.463*sin(4*x*1.118) + 0.3583*cos(5*x*1.118)\ + 5.878*sin(5*x*1.118)))) for x in range(12)]) And you get the same result. (btw, yes, i copypasta'd this)
  3. The EL IRC channel

My 2 cents: Making an irc channel imo isn't exactly a reason for everybody to throw themselves at your feet in admiration and gratitude. An irc channel getting hijacked/entered by people doing whatever at least for me wouldn't really be a reason to slit my wrists. Still: I completely agree with you there, entropy. It's pretty much common behavior on the internet. Yet, imagine playing a game that has a rule against it right next to rules concerning hacking the game and exploiting bugs. Just how serious would you take the latter when being able to quote the game's chief like that on the former? I adressed this before and maybe "people should be smart enough to weight the rules for themselves" might be the most obvious reason to dismiss it. Well, 2013 topics in the bans section would beg to differ. If by some means emphasis on some rules vs. the others was expressed, i'd bet my left arm we'd only have 2012 of those by now.
  4. Extremly low fps

Hi, maybe you took the proprietary ATI driver from the repos. That one is an official, proprietray driver, but the version could best be described as antique. Some friends of mine have ATI cards and they're using the installer for the driver, which they dowlnloaded directly from ATIs website. If you donn't use that onealready, it might eventually solve your problem, though you might have to reinstall it with every update of the kernel you put on that laptop. XD
  5. win 7 64 bit

One last, pretty improbable, shot in the dark: In Windows 7 there's an option to run programs with administrator privileges. Have you tried that for el.exe?

  7. Counters editor :P

Okay, more good news. When i asked about the counters, it turned out both bluap and Sir_Odie had made a program for merging those already. I compiled bluaps version on Ubuntu and put it here. The windows-version made by Sir_Odie is here And if you want to compile it yourself, the source for bluaps version is here.
  8. Counters editor :P

From what i read in the wikipedia article i gathered that neither junction points(only applicable to folders) nor shortcuts(can't be used by EL or DB) are suitable for our case here. And real symlinks were introduced to windows not until vista(or windows server 2008). For those the syntax is mklink "C:\EinLink.pdf" "D:\EinDokument.pdf" mklink /d "D:\Pfad1\Neues Verzeichnis" "..\Pfad2\Reales Verzeichnis" But for earlier versions of windows you'd have to install cygwin or something. And i'm pretty sure we'd pass the critical cost/outcome mark with that. I have to admit i'm not really knowledgeable with windows and in my earlier enthusiasm i clearly underestimated how complicated matters could become there...
  9. Counters editor :P

Hmmm, originally it's only supposed to handle entire folders, not single files. You could do a bit of Kungfu though and replace your counters.dat in the .elc folder with a hyperlink (how were those really called again?) to the real file inside a folder managed by db. Edit: They were called symlinks. XD
  10. Can't turn off fullscreen

Just a shot in the dark, but what exactly does it do when you press Alt+Enter?
  11. Counters editor :P

    Agreed upon.
  12. Counters editor :P

Hmmm. Since i'm not exactly sure what'd happen then could you try this with some unimportant file please? Making 2 different versions on 2 of your computers and uploading them at the same time? Dropbox ain't a versioning system, but i still guess it'd carry out both changes one after the other, leaving you with the version that arrived just a millisecond later, but that's just a guess. For the merging i see no quick solution atm though since i'm not even able to find out which encoding is used for the counters_playername.dat. XD
  13. starting bids: 390k gc for iron ore, 160k gc for coal. min bid increase:1k gc Both auctions will end at the beginning of the mentioned special day. (The one mentioned here, not a coincidentally sooner happening one.) Post your bids here and please include which auction your bid is for in your post. If you want to remain anonymous, get yourself a middle man. Happy bidding, Elgoran.
  14. Auctioning 100k iron ore and 70k coal

    Auction ended.
  15. Counters editor :P

Hmm, since yours is more likely a special case than the common one, i'd suggest a workaround: Get yourself a program for data synch'ing (e.g. dropbox) and have it control your directory for the EL-settings (/home/elgoran/.elc in my case) on all three computers. Thus, the changes done to your counters on one machine will automatically be carried to the others upon boot. (or shortly after) Problem solved.
  16. New critical damage

So i read that as people whose armor absorbs all the damage have a higher breakrate than people whose armor doesn't. If you have a high toughness, the chance of your armor absorbing all the leftover damage'll be higher, no? To some extent, but much less drastic, that'd be also true for the armorbreaker perk. You get +1 armor, also increasing your armor's chance to not let any damage get to you.
  17. Debian/Ubuntu packages from latest CVS

Seems to have worked. Haven't had any more crashes. Thanks, bluap.
  18. New critical damage

Hi, i read the thread and think i got a rough picture of the whole issue now. There's one last thing though i don't completely understand: I read this as a higher toughness lessening the breakrate. I read this as a higher toughness increasing the breakrate, since a higher toughness will improve the chance of your armor absorbing the rest of the damage. So did i get this right and toughness now has an ambiguous role towards the breakrate? I know us players won't get to know the whole formula, but i'd really appreciate a little hint regarding character build. Best regards, Elgoran.
  19. Graphics settings

Okay, i'm writing this under the premise that you only touched the options changeable in the ingame menu and did not edit the .ini-file. When i say "shut down" or "turn off" i'm referring to a button. "Set to x" means one of the numeric fields. Options -> Video: Antitrosophic filtering 1.00, watershader 0 and maybe lower the resolution to 800x600 or even 640x480 -> Details: Turn everything off here, except for poor man. Also set particle percentage to 0. -> Adv. Video: Turn everything off here too. Set viewing distance and show reflections to the lowest possible ammount. Perspective shouldn't affect performance, just choose something that makes the game look good iyo (i've got 0.50 there) -> Eye candy: Again, shut down everything. The eye candy framerates shouldn't matter, since you've disabled that anyway. Not sure about idle cycles and light column treshold though, best reduce that to minimum as well. -> Sky & cam: shut down everything again. The number values shouldn't matter. Now restart the game. afaik some changes only take effect when restarting the game. Hopefully you'll get some frames now. If not, try to catch me online and PM me ingame or simply ask on channel 2 (type "#jc 2" then "@@2 halp! I haz teh graphix troublez.") . Oh and.... welcome to the Eternal Lands.
  20. Cannot walk in mac version

Hi. Just asking: Did you finish making your character (choosing appearance, setting name, password and clicking done) and then try to login with it?
  21. Fighter or Mixer ? :)

Total exp earned in EL: 132297089 (132.3M) Exp wasted on #resets: 45000854 (45M) Attack+Defense exp vs other skills: 72.15% (95.5M) Hmmm.... okay, maybe i'm not a mixer.
  22. Minimap

Hmm, for me using antialiasing has the same effect. I don't override EL's antitrosophic filtering and wether or not i set that to 16 or 1 ingame, AA rounds the dots on the minimap. Any feedback on wether this works for other people as well would be appreciated. Edit: Oh yeah and i support the idea for putting a black border around the dots.
  23. Haidir bug?

    Lookee here
  24. The Mind Eraser

If i got you right, you're speaking of the functionality that used to be provided by the #killme yes command. That one was deactivated for reasons unknown to me, but most probably because of being abused. Whatever the reason was, it's probably valid for the mindeater as well.
  25. STR8Jacket of *CO*

Not going to make any friends on either side of the discussion, but on a sidenote: The version of the rules displayed ingame states as rule Nr.1 that players are to use appropriate language. It is not limited to specific ways of communication(e.g. local chat in populated areas, official channels, PMs, etc.). Now when somebody reports a case where this is violated, he/she is told to use methods for filtering out such content of the chatsystem. Of course this rule can't seriously be enforced by kicks and bans all the time or EL would loose half of its playerbase and on channel 6 you'd hear the persistent chirring of the cicadas. Since the ingame list is the primary source of information for anyone on what is allowed and what is not though, a rule manifested there but not enforced might dilute the players' belief in the enforcement of the whole set of rules. Thus i'd like to suggest either the complete removal of this rule from the list or a partition of the list into weak and strong rules. Since, again, by the current version somebody who got away with namecalling might be led to believe he'd get away with outright cheating as well. Which leads to unnecessary work for the mods. PS: If the current version of the ingame rules differs from mine (i'm using bluap's precompiled cvs-client) in that aspect, ignore this whole post.
