I've found a really simple fix for this: #lc 1. I did this weeks ago and have found the quiet very enjoyable. I cant complain about channel 1, but that might be the grace of a different time zone Piper No, Piper, it's not a different time zone. I'm on during their time zone, and for the most part, it is pretty quiet. But, there are the occasional pissing contests. Rarely do they get this excessive. The idea that this is the norm is wrong; however, it does occasionally happen and it does need to stop. The majority of flames on the server are not this bad, nor should they be. Certainly there is swearing, but cruelty with the intent of personal insult is entirely different. PaulB has apologized, but now he can show he's sorry by being one of the ones to help stop it. When he sees someone else going to far, it is not inappropriate to tell them to stop. I told someone to stop not to long ago and the of course the response was "who made you a mod?" but then he actually did stop. If other people had stepped up and said "you're going too far" during this conversation, it may have stopped. Most people are not entirely unreasonable, and the rest can be ignored. No, I'm not a mod. We are all moderators of our own words and actions and as evidenced by this thread, there are consequences. But we're all each other's moderator's, too. We are not only protecting other people, we are protecting the server. If you want the server to continue (and I'm talking to everyone who plays it) it is is YOUR personal responsibility to moderate it. I had a lot more to say, but sun tzu just started

Ent's words (to those who understand them) are offensive; however, most of the readers of this thread don't know what he said and therefor they have no power. They are just a string of letters, as all words are until culture and context prescribe a meaning (see the funny thread about fanny) Words have the power and meaning that we attach to them. There are so many words with similar meanings because the world is not black and white. Shades of meaning with words are what adds texture and richness to them. The ability to use to language well is a skill, and using powerful words is sometimes necessary. It is not the use of swear words that is indicative of a poor education, but rather a limited vocabulary in general.

More power to those preserving the power of language for the rest of us! How bland the English language would be without nuance, implication, connotation, or undertone. Side note: This works conversely as well. If you are truly offended by a word, use it as frequently as possible and encourage others to as well. Nothing can strip a word of it's offensiveness more than common use.

Ok, here in the US that was at 3:21 am on a Thursday night. Obviously this is an issue of having the majority of players on during normal US times. Perhaps advertising on some of the international channels would help. Right now there are 25 people logged and it's 3:00 PM EST, and I'm here because of a snow day. In a couple hours when people get off work, it generally grows to 30-40 and has been at that number pretty steadily when I log on since the character wipe. People are joining as often as people are quitting. Just mostly American apparently... The server is not dead, but it certainly seems to sleep. Someone call Asia and tell them about the PK server

Relying on the forums doesn't quite work either since the pk server thread doesn't really get read by a lot of non-pk server players (note the far lower number of reads and then compare to number of comments made by the same people). I was very surprised how few people knew about the event I held yesterday despite the fact that it had been on the calendar for a week. Even Radu, who reads everything, didn't know about it. Once he realized it, he made a little announcement and linked the thread. At that point, the number of people who read about the event doubled. I accredit part of the success of the event to that announcement. My theory is that when people see "pk server" in the thread line, they don't read it because they assume it doesn't concern them, and they are right. Most of what we talk about doesn't concern them. What do they care about summoning stones and pickpoint buying? I think advertising on the main server in conjunction with a web page that explains what the PK server is all about and what the differences are will help attract those who haven't joined just because they lack information and aren't really sure who to ask. Could we get a page on the EL website that does this? At the bottom there could be a paypal link and directions for creating a new character. I don't mind writing it up. Our target audience are those who have been playing for a couple months, were too new at the character wipe to care what was going on, but are now experienced enough to be successful on this server.

Event: This is a "find and kill" event on the main server. At the moment there will be two three FIVE people hiding on different PK maps. Contestants must find and kill one of them to win. The Prize: If you can kill one of us, you win a character on the PK server. At the moment, two FOUR characters are brand new and unnamed, and the third is a named character. The Extra Challenge: This is an announced PK event covering all of the PK maps. Everyone knows, so hopefully all of the PKers out there will be scouring maps either looking for the hiders, or looking for the lookers. When: Thursday, February 21st at 22:00 GMT (5:00 pm EST) The hiders will be: SyWren: high 30s a/d. SyWren is naked (possibly shivering, but then again, she may have found a comfy place to keep warm). Will she fight? Not on this server... peino: mid 50s a/d. Peino is wearing his dancing shoes and may have a few fancy steps. Enly: mid 40s a/d. I hear rumor she keeps a pet rock in pocket. Sithicus: mid 30s a/d. Sithicus may be joining us late, but when he does, he may just engineer a few friends to keep him company. kaGen: Unconfirmed...(but if I know kaGen, you might find yourself fighting your way through his entourage just to get a glimpse of him) Spellsword: high 30s a/d. Spellsword is dressed for business, but ready to play. The first five confirmed kills will be the winners. Note: This is not designed as an opportunity to gain alts. We would prefer to give the prize to someone who is interested in trying out the PK server for the first time. You're on your honor here, folks. I held an event on the day of the character wipe, but didn't make it a huge event or anything. We could hold a larger, announced version, but we would have to give away a couple more characters. The event is a "find her and kill her" sort of thing and my main character is perfect for this sort of event since she is only 39/39 a/d. I hid in the EVTR PK cave (wearing only an mm cloak of course) and it took about 45 minutes for anyone to find me with about a dozen people looking. If you are all interested, I think a larger scale version of this event would help get some publicity as well as new players. To make it larger, we could get two or three more people to donate $5 and join in. We would need as many other players hiding around on PK maps. We couldn't tell you all where we are, but we would let everyone know who they are looking for. Since it is announced, it would be a fun PK day since there might be quite a few people wandering maps looking for us. You are all welcome to PK the lookers! Is anyone else willing to donate $5 and/or have a low/medium character willing to get killed for a good cause? If there is a decent reaction, I'll get with you to start planning. I might have been unclear about the "non-contestant PKers". Those who kill us are hopefully doing it for the prize. If they find us and don't want the prize, they could always just stick around and wait for the next person to show up. If it happens, we'll have to decide at that time since there are variables like how many people know the loc, time into the event, etc.... We'll be on a channel together and can talk about it if comes up. When I ask a mod to announce it, I'll ask that it be stated (in pretty blue spam) that killing one the five of us means you want the prize, and we can always reiterate it in channel 6.

I am going to get a mod to announce it, so I imagine anyone in a PK area has enough presence of mind to know what's going on. Hopefully they will leave the named hiders alone and concentrate on killing the lookers, but if that happens, we'll just have to talk to them about whether or not they want their prize. We aren't going to force it on them Chances are pretty good that someone who frequents PK maps/arenas has an interest in PK and might be curious about trying out the server.

I've given this some thought and here's how I've decided to time it: If all five hiders are found within an hour, it will be kept a secret in order to allow more PK. After an hour, it will be announced how many are still hiding, and if any of the hiders need to be released, one of the "dead" hiders will replace them until all of the prizes are awarded. If after two hours, all of the prizes have not been awarded, they will be put on reserve as a prize for a future, similar events. At the moment, we have five characters as prizes, but I have only confirmed three of my hiders. If any honorable players with low/medium stats would like to be on the "reserve" list in case the other two can't participate, please PM me. I will post the finalized list of hiders and a brief "bio" about each so that lookers can get an idea of what to expect if they find one. BE WARNED: some of the hiders will fight back (magic, med level summons, weapons, heal, etc...) I am asking that they don't leave the map or arena, but some may dis/flee and expect a bit of a chase. Hiders and stats now available in first post. (and yes, I realize they are quite cheesy)

Basic a/d/p/c stats of the hider (I will be posting general basics, so know that this will be public) 2. If you plan to wear armor/weapon, carry rosto, diss/flee, heal, etc... You're welcome to do as you like, but I would like to announce it before hand so people know what to expect if they find you, and know if perhaps they should avoid you and move on and look for someone else. 3. Where you plan to hide~ I'm hoping by chance we'll be pretty spread out 4. Confirmation that you will be able to hide. Please let me know also if you've changed your mind or discovered you have other plans. Since we currently have more hiders than prizes, the winners will simply be the first three to kill. Good question. I'm going to compile this information tomorrow and post basics like this. At the moment, the range is between 30s a/d naked and 70s dressed and fighting back. I'm curious to know how many people are planning to show up just for the PK action (and not for the prizes). I don't know if I am going to announce the winners as they make their kills, or keep it a secret for a little while so PKers can have some fun. Thoughts? Preferences?

1. Date and time has to be finalized, so Thursday February 21st at 22:00 GMT (5:00 EST). I can't make it on the next couple of weekends because my weekends are getting booked quickly by RL, so I really apologize to those who can't make it at that time. 2. We have lots of people willing to die, but not enough people willing to donate a character. Are there any unused characters out there that anyone is willing to donate? I've already made the "it's not that much money" list, so now a new approach: how much did you spend on that Xbox game you rarely play because you're too busy with EL? 3. I had a snow day today (actually an ice storm day) and stayed home playing the PK server. It was beginning to feel as if I couldn't change maps without running into a different person. Either there are more people on the server when I'm at work, or you're all coming out of hiding. At any rate, I'm getting that "can't go afk" nervousness again, and this is a good thing.
