teranoz Report post Posted September 15, 2004 I have to re down load ETERNAL LANDS again ???/ i have 9.6k modem. do you know how slow that is compare to a 56k modem ?? Get a real modem. You get the money saved by using a faster one within a month. (did you rob a museum for that modem ?)
Placid Report post Posted September 15, 2004 (did you rob a museum for that modem ?) LMFAO!!!!!!!! That means you must have a download rate of about 1/2 kbps?
fred_penner Report post Posted September 15, 2004 Wow... I still have my old 9600 baud (wow, I haven't said/written "baud" in years) modem kicking around too. And it was expensive and cool when all my friends still had their 300 and 2400 baud modems. Ah, the good old days: connecting to a 300 baud BBS to play "Infinity Complex" - anyone remember that game? Cicero Report post Posted September 15, 2004 No, but I have licenses to run Legend of the Red Dragon (1 & 2) and Planets: the Exploration of Space. I've beaten LORD 2. How, do you ask? The ending was never finished! Oh, but it was. It was just never added before the original author sold the rights to the game. Of course, if you haven't heard of those games either, you probably don't know what I'm talking about. Oh, and I also played Trade Wars. One of these days I'm going to get my BBS running again. Wytter Report post Posted September 16, 2004 Really, a 56k modem is not expensive - by downloading EL you might even get the money back from that purchase due to a smaller internet bill ;-)
Entropy Report post Posted September 17, 2004 You can't play EL on a 9.6kbps modem. That's about 1000 bytes/second (500 up, 500 down).
fred_penner Report post Posted September 17, 2004 Oh, and I also played Trade Wars. One of these days I'm going to get my BBS running again. I loved Trade wars. Ah, the good old days... I used to run my own BBS in my parents basement for years. Then when I moved out I took the phone number with me. For a long time I used to get computers calling my new place... Learner Report post Posted September 17, 2004 You can't play EL on a 9.6kbps modem. That's about 1000 bytes/second (500 up, 500 down). Actually, most 9600 baud modems are full duplex at that speed, but 960 bytes/sec in each direction is the max unless you luck out with compression (and the EL wont compress very well). Maybe this will give you a lot of incentive to revamp the protocl & game play so that you can enjoing it on your modem? You may not get full speed and enjoyment out of it, but something like that project would reduce total bandwidth usage and help all players at the same time. Entropy Report post Posted September 17, 2004 Unless we add some compression (which most of the ISPs do anyway) we won't see any noticeable improvement. Besides, there are more important things to be done now.
