Client Crashes immediately upon loading

Recommended Posts

Guest Trinesti

After installing the game on my Windows 10 computer, the game will not load and crashes within 1 or 2 seconds after clicking on the icon. It will not make it to the log in screen. How can I fix this?

I would try uninstall and reinstall.   Be sure you follow the downloading steps found on the main site.    Correct destination of files is key!

If you are running a Windows 10 computer, most likely you will need to download the 64-bit variant; by the way.

main_2198.log

I have no idea why it shows c:/msys64/home/paul I'm going to assume that is coming from the server.

I can guess that either there is something in regedit that needs to be deleted or there's a problem with your code because I've deleted everything related to previous installs, the previous version was still working (albeit not able to connect to server).

Probably a leftover from the machine where the code was compiled?

Anyway, I don't think those messages cause a crash...

That seems to indicate a problem outside the client for that version.

Three things though:

- please state which OS and client version you are using, a possible in-game name can be useful as well;

- your "log file" isn't accessible;

- there's no need to attach the same file three times.

Given what we've seen here before, such repetition often indicates a spam post, with rather iffy content. Spam gets deleted on sight...

I attached once but when I pressed submit reply it posted it like that for some reason.
anyway, regarding the topic:

I use windows 10, previously I had an old version of the game which could be over a year old (sorry no idea what exact version) when I opened that it was obvious that I needed to update, since that version was outdated and while I could use the client it was stuck offline. I went ahead and downloaded the latest version from the website and installed that.

When I tried to open the client after installing, it started with a white screen like what the OP said, I can see the load bar and version (still white background) and then it crashes. Initially the version was 1.9.6p1b ... after I tried to clean up possible leftovers from the previous install(s) and attempted to reinstall it a couple times to check the version is now 1.9.6p1 (do not trust this recollection as factual, but I strongly remember seeing a b as the last character in the version the first time I opened it, I just can't be sure it was 1.9.6p1b or 1.9.6p or some variation)

about the errors
I've seen this kind of TTF issue before either in an old installation of this or DDO, as a result of a ttf issue the game would not load until I did some hackery to fix it. I say this or DDO because these are the only two games I've had to do manual tweaking to get them to work.
Naturally, I can't also rule out that it is something else.

Objectively I'm not a standard case as it pertains to typical users, I come here sometimes to remind myself of some aspect of the gameplay or relive some part of it for my own reasons, most non technical people will not retain after encountering any problem that forces them to find a technical solution and implement fixes themselves, so these kind of problems will cause you long term retention issues. Which is a shame because the game does offer some very unique concepts which give it the necessary value to justify all the other problems. But anyways, enough ramble... Unfortunately I don't have the time or energy to wait for the fix or to solve it myself right now so I'm gonna have to move on for now.

Maybe I'll be back in the future though.

Hi Tempsds,

Those TTF errors you are seeing are normal, it just means those particular system fonts don't contain all of the necessary symbols which would be required for it to be used in the game client. Pretty much every platform we support has at least a couple of fonts like that; the errors are harmless and won't be the cause of your client crash.

If you're still interested in trying to get things going, could you please follow the steps below:

  1. Browse to your (My) Documents folder, in which there should be a folder named "Eternal Lands"
  2. Rename the "Eternal Lands" folder to something else ("EL Backup" would work)
  3. Launch the game and see what happens, note that a new "Eternal Lands" folder will be automatically created

If the game still isn't working as expected at this point, please do the following:

  1. Browse to the newly created "Eternal Lands" folder
  2. Within this you will find a "log" folder containing a bunch of random .log files
  3. Upload the FULL contents of main_*.log to pastebin, or paste it in your response here

it always shows the same thing, but so you know there's no Fonts/Fonts path, if it's trying to access fonts in that path that makes me think it's actually not able to render ANY font and is crashing because of that.

Well I gave it a try so this is the point I got to..

I downloaded 1.9.5p9 from github to see at what patch problem appears
it does work, but kicks me off after a while because the version is not supported by the server

I now try to install 1.9.6.1 since this is the next version I can without have to build it from source code

this time it gives the following error [C:/msys64(...)/el-client/elc/load_gl_extensions.c:1249] Failed to get OpenGL extensions string.

Note that I am using x32 for this attempt, because I wanted to see if it will work.
For additional context I have mingw and SDL2 installed for development.

The last thing I'll say is that the 1.9.5p9 working is the patch before a major ttf patch, after this ttf patch the game doesn't load, for which a possible cause is something like the SDL2_ttf failing and crashing as a result.

anyway I did all I could but this is just a big time sink

the main log contains :

This looks similar to a previous issues reported where there was a problem with the graphics card or graphics driver.

Make sure your graphics driver is up to date and if that doesn't work switch between the Windows default driver and the latest from your graphics card maker.

There may be additional clues in your chat log regarding graphics. Can you post the lines that are written as the client starts up? It should be in your Windows User's EL folder and named chat_log.txt.
