game crashing - ubuntu

Recommended Posts

Hi,

EL keeps crashing on the first load screen. This happened Saturday too, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and just updated it. I reloaded EL from the Ubuntu site, then downloaded the new EL update package from my package manager in the GUI.

It worked for awhile but tonight it is crashing repeatedly, just like before. Here is the error log:

This information about your graphic hardware and software may help.

Output from "lspci | grep -i vga":

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev a1)

Output from "glxinfo | head -5":

name of display: :0.0

display: :0 screen: 0

direct rendering: Yes

server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation

server glx version string: 1.4

The following is your error log contents. Note it is overwritten each time you run the game.

If you are using the standard Nvidia drivers for Ubuntu 9.10 then there is a know problem with random crashes. Either update to a newer Ubuntu (I use 10.04 Long Tern Support here) or down grade your Nvidia drivers as advised in this thread.

I expect you're right. This isn't the first time I've had similar problems.

Thanks!

The downgrade worked fine for me when I was using 9.10. If you don't already know, you run the "Hardware Drivers" application from the "System->Administrators". When this has finished checking things, it should present a list of driver options. If I remember correctly, the 173 driver should be listed. Just select it and follow the on-screen instructions to install.
