Samanex Report post Posted December 14, 2005 It is a tiny detail I know, but it's been worming through my brain for a while. There has been plenty of effort to keep the game 'timely' and 'realistic' which pops up in the forums and chat. The feel of ancient adventurers and steel on steel, roasting meat on an open fire. The little detail I notice is the phrase "Beam me up" which is a Star Trek reference, or just "Beam me" which doesn't make much sense in itself as well as referring to an undefined area of Isla Prima as 'Beam'. I remember reading the website while the client was downloading (hours on dial-up, plenty of time to read) about this place called Beam where I should go if I'm in trouble. It sounded very Sci-Fi, or dreamlike particularly when I had to get my advice from a wraith who was east of Beam. It all made sense after a few hours of playing and reading the docs, but it still doesn't fit the theme of the game. Can the phrase "beam me" be replaced with something more timely? Also can it be one direct command, as opposed to the confusion of typing 'beam me up' when only 'beam me' is needed? I don't have any solid suggestions, but I do sense the same puzzlement I had in every new player that chats on channel 1. The one clue to ideas is the talk that La Sud gives concerning "Where did all these people come from?" Maybe just the word 'Origin' instead of 'Beam me'? Or 'Source', 'Home', 'Ollie, Ollie, oxen free!" I don't know, but in keeping with the game theme, Star Trek doesn't fit, and for the sake of newcomers a two or maybe three word strange phrase doesn't help. Maybe I'm being nit-picky, but I've seen similar thoughts expressed over lesser issues. I'm done! Urk! Forgot to mention: I did see talk of eliminating the "beamer" command altogether, that it was an easy out of a bad situation. That seems like a bad idea since people do get stuck in odd places, newbies get in over their heads, and the oldbies won't be so inspired to hang around the fire keeping it lit and healing people. Not to mention it's awful handy to fly off to the wraith and spend that precious pickypoint I've been slaving all week to aqquire! Hmm... how about: "Back to my same ol' used to be"..... Infamous Report post Posted December 14, 2005 i think beam me up is fine since i'm not interested to type a story like "back to my same ol' used to be'" and if you read the story a bit then you know we all came from a spaceship and landed on Isla prima so a star trek thingy fits
Placid Report post Posted December 14, 2005 Whatever the story, I think it should be kept for old times sake :-)

Not to mention it's awful handy to fly off to the wraith and spend that precious pickypoint I've been slaving all week to aqquire! Hmm... how about: "Back to my same ol' used to be"..... I might have something interessting to say about this. There are rings of Isla Prima, so if you want to go back to IP, use a ring (we will have -lower- rings to sell to everybody yeay for the -beginning- crafters) But than, what if you get stuck!! "AAhhh...!! I am stuck ... help me!! free me!!" Well, instead of "Beam me up" you could have a new command like: "#move me" "#free me" "#help me" (currently used for help-questions for mods ... but they can 'free you as well') I dont want mods to be saddled up with all the people who get stuck ... but one of the other 2 suggestions might help. These commands would move you to the map you are on, to a free spot, near your current position (within viewing range, it aint a teleport spell) Maybe you will freeze for a few seconds too, 5 or 10 seconds. So that this cant be used as an 'escape'-move on pk-maps. It is only for when you get stuck, nothing more, nothing less. Other people shouldn't be effected by that command. I can understand that if you get stuck you would rather move to a position near the point where you got stuck ... like, you are entering a mine to harvest silver ore, you get stuck while entering, you beam and have to walk that distance to the mine again!! It aint funny. So a 'nearby-move' command would be better in that case. If you want to go to IP very fast (for a deal or a visit with the wraith or whateve) than use a ring This is my view, greetz, the clown
Roja Report post Posted December 14, 2005 I think the phrase beam me up is just something to be a bit humorous..little things like that are put into the game here and there. not too much I've never heard anyone complaining about it before, so i see no reasons to change it. Samanex Report post Posted December 14, 2005 That's fair. I shant belabor the point! Every time I use it, I still have this image of James Doohan (Scotty) saying: "Cap'n, we're on impulse power as 'tis! I canna get you warp drive *ach*!" Not very medieval! LadyWolf Report post Posted December 14, 2005 Sam, if you read the posts here you will see that the game is not entirely meant to be medieval...the phrase #beam me up is no more odd than a cute little white bunny being able to rip you limb from limb, or them saying we arrived on a space ship..it's a classic, first time i heard about the command it made me laugh, still does when i see the newer players misfire it into the market channel. Roja Report post Posted December 14, 2005 I'll be honest, i don't like sci-fi much myself...ok ok, with the exception of Bablyon 5(because of the storyline & characters) and the star wars movies.. ....but in general, i don't like the mechanical sides of things and favor medieval over it anyday. Yet this doesn't bother me..perhaps it's because i didn't grow up with star trek, i dont' know But the overall consensus is positive with the beam me up command, tha'ts what matters. Mrs_Nesbitt Report post Posted December 14, 2005 (edited) ...'Ollie, Ollie, oxen free!" ...Maybe I'm being nit-picky... Let me start with apologies for being even more nit-picky over things, but whenever there is a chance for group education, I leap like a frog as OXEN cannot leap! Wikipedia says this in the section on Hide and Seek: "It" may give up, of course, or the game may have some form of "game over" rule. A common way of doing this is to shout "Alley, alley, oxen free!" or "Ollie, Ollie, oxen free!" – probably a corruption of the German "Alle, alle auch sind frei", (literally, "Everyone, everyone also is free"). WIKIPEDIA wins!<...just don't use in as a source on papers!> Maybe we can type "Calgon, take me away!" <I realize I am really showing advancing age by referencing old television commercials, but you get what you pay for> Edited December 14, 2005 by Mrs_Nesbitt
Puntif Report post Posted December 14, 2005 I don't really like "#beam me". It's a game player command not a part of the game itself. I use it only when I'm stuck someplace like getting teleported into the rock wall in DP coal cave. I would rather see it converted into a 0 mana 0 exp magic spell or something like that. This would make it part of the game - something the character does instead of something the player does . . . or get rid of it entirely . . .

ttlanhil Report post Posted December 14, 2005 "#beam me" is needed because of mapbugs and similar (not just map... if you get pinned down some other way as well). as such, there will be problems if they ever do remove it. what it isn't (or shouldn't be) is a was to get to IP easily. if it becomes a debug command only* then having a name like it currently does doesn't matter... because it's something the player does * ie: it's not beneficial to use the command. move the player a screen or two(actually, a TPTR range limit might be best) and stop them walking for 10-20sec. it can't be used as an escape, nor for travel (random direction). it can still be used when there's a map bug, and without the cost of the current version (for people exploring C2, this cost is in gc as well as the time to walk back)
Cormaher Report post Posted December 14, 2005 (edited) '#beam me up' and 'beam' are fine, considering the origin we all have on Draia. Lasud gives directions to get more info. 'Beam' is also a fantastic way out for n00bs like me who accidently get on a map where there are more and bigger monsters than they can handle. I think it should stay the way it is. The game is not sci-fi, just as the game is not medieval. The game is >fantasy< and that is exactly why the whole spaceship / beam / radon / torpedo thingies that people find 'not timely' fits in. If it was purely medieval we should all stop summoning fluffies (that's two hits in one sentence, each worth a cent, hence: my two cents). That way it would be no diferent than moving normally. makes sense?

Kedan Report post Posted December 18, 2005 lol i like the idea of a comand that is like tele to range but it sends you to a random open space (this would also help you when you get blocked on a brige, and it has a 20 seconds delay after using it, only problems is people can abuse this comand in places like the cave in nc to get to the rubies without using essences, it might take a few goes to get teleported over there but it would be worth it, so maybe you can only use it onces per 5 minutes, making it alot less atractive. Also when using it when you get stuck in paces, it wont help when you get stuck when going to a different map, most comman exaple of this is when you go inside houses and there not programed in the .def's files right so you get stuck , and im not sure how we can fix this, but i guess as there are normally mods on this wont be to much of an isue if you cant think of a way around it
Samanex Report post Posted December 19, 2005 It is a handy command no matter what it's called. I use it most for spending my precious picky points and meeting people for whatever reason, not to mention being stuck. No reason to remove it. Maybe we can type "Calgon, take me away!" <I realize I am really showing advancing age by referencing old television commercials, but you get what you pay for> That really is an oldie, Mrs N! "Ancient Chinese Secret, huh?" Now you've really got me on a tangent, "You're soaking in it!" How about "I'm EL, fly me!", "Quicker picker upper!", "The pause that refreshes.", "You deserve a break today!", "try it, you'll like it!", "I'd walk a mile for a pick point", etc. Oh, and don't forget; while you harvest: It's not nice to fool Mother Nature! (As little boys, my pals and I loved the slogan: "If you think it's butter, but it's snot!" Sorry...)
