Will there be a character wipe after beta is over?

Recommended Posts

if you want a pm bridge i could reletively easily implement something like that in my bot. i have redesigned my bot a little to make it easyer to implmement a bot that can have mutliple connections and multiple backends. For example i have a socket backend so i can telnet to my bot if i wanted to.

Different servers would mean different top 50 lists..ect

Perhaps one server that holds the character information, and any additional servers temporarily load it for gameplay, then resaves on to the main server when a person logs out.

Why?

Don't know what the server architecture is, but...

To make the server scalable, you could have a seperate process for each map, a single character management process, and a front-end interface process (single external connection point). These processes could then be distributed across a number of machines to spread the expected load, communicating with an internal protocol.

Hm, sounds vaguely familier...

BTW, on an unrelated note, when we reach over 900 players online on the main server, we will have another server on, whch will be the same world and rules and everything but on that server there will be a total wipe, so the servers will be totally different from eachother in terms of players and stuff.

And no, there will be no transfering users between servers.

Wooo :)

(Been waiting for this for ages.. Will add excitement and fun again :) )

Hopefully it'll be soon... :)

I don't like the idea of someone being able to use my name on a different server if I don't create a character fast enough.

Few problems - more processes take up more CPU just managing them, which, as you pointed out, is usually why daemons usually run spread across a network. Unfortunately, EL doesn't exactly merit a network of machinces yet, nor the CPU overhead of said framework.

Well EL in my opinion will have to change level system some day, because a newcomer needs well over a year of hard work to be able to compete at the highest level. And that hard work is mostly clicking, its not really challenging and its too repetitative. Most of the folk will stick to it for a while and give up.

I can hardly talk about el objectively, but i recently tried a game (also beta) whitch was fun at the beggining but then i asked: Hey how long will it take me to be able to fight the top guys. Answer: about a year or two. I didnt log in anymore :D

Roleplaying is ok. Unless you want to roleplay a fighter :inquisitive:

@Dagar (below): Afcourse it is possible, but is still limits the potential of the game because not all people are like that.

it would be easy solved problem. PKmaps with "combat level" look. If u have combatLvl50 or over, u cant go in there :) or is that imposible?

The server, as it is now, could handle maybe 2-3K players. The reason I want to make another server is so that newbies will stand a chance against the veterans. Plus, if one server goes down, at least there will be another one.

Always a good idea.

When I used to play DabloII. The main UK server kept crashing.. Then there was nothing else to do apart from sit around waiting for it to be fixed and open again, sometimes it could take a few days.

And I am sure the EL community wouldn't want that, would they? :P

Lol.

Anyways, good idea Ent. :)

Player wipes are good for us. :) I do not know enough about servers and the like to say much, but I like the idea of keeping one server and everyone on it. Just wiping all the characters to clean things up and restart the economy. Two servers would be strange IMHO. There would be a rift between the two servers. ;( But as always Ill take whatever is comming with a bright eye. ;)

one set of free-to-play servers and one set of pay-to-play servers. :)

each group has a distributed database setup so that you can play on any of them, so if your usual one goes down you can just change server and it'll sync up when it's back online. (or you can dns-round-robbin the servers for automatic load ballancing)

no worries about people picking your name on other servers, and less strain on the servers ^_^

and newbies having to work to get up there is a good thing, IMO... gives them something to strive for. and if they stick with it they can get high in the rankings

A character wipe is not a good idea. Several of us have done that. The potential second server should have new characters IMO.

So if you want to start "fresh" just start a character on the 2nd server once it is in place.

I think that having a second server with the identical world, but where everyone starts from scratch is fabulous!

However, I think that not having names reserved is going to lead to much teeth knashing and chaos.

As an alternative, can't you just move all the character names and passwords over to the new server? No skills or personal resources- just give ppl the chance to "claim" their name? Seems fair.

Hi,

I think that the new server were everyone starts off fresh is a good idea, it will give people who only discovered EL recently a chance at the top spots. But you mustn't look at it as a leveling of the playing fields.

The one thing everyone must remember is:

The more you play the higher and faster you level up.

For Example:

Two newbies start playing today, one plays 14 hours a day the other only 6.

Obviously one will far outpace the other in a few days of playing. If the second player after two weeks also starts playing 14 hours a day, he has no hope of ever catching up to the other, unless the other stops or plays less.

i.e. Face it! The playing fields will never be level. Good players that play more often will always fill the Top 200 lists.

It all depends on you.

You must decide for yourself why you play EL, if you want the top spots then work hard otherwise relax, stop moaning about life and just have fun.

actually, some people can play 14 hours a day, at the same level as others, and another can get just as much xp in that 6 hours. You also need to know what your doing :)

some of the people that have been playing for a while can start a new char, and get 20+ stats in a day :)

That day is a bit far in time...the maximum players online is about 500 and that dont happens on a day base so a second server will take a year or more to come.

El is a cult game keep it that way.

It's possible to reach the top is a matter of will. Of course u can't compete with a 14 year kid that plays 8 hours a day but that isn't a thing that i would like to do...i dont waste my life in el i play a bit it. There's more in life than bits and bytes.

Bad idea.

There will be just a push from server 1 to server 2 of the frustating players that can't live without being n1 and for that u can ruin server 2 with a bunch of spoile kids.

Good idea.

Server 1 will be free of the pesky kids! :w00t:
