  1. popen seems very limited in functionality, personally I would prefer just setting up the pipes and fork()'ing manually... But, popen is in stdio, shouldn't that mean it's portable to even Windows? In that case I see the advantage

And yes, amazingly Windows has similar functionality (they even call it StandardInput/Output/Error), I've used it from VB.NET to control psftp.exe :D

  2. I believe, if my memory of K&R's "The C Programming Language" is correct, is that a function is represented as the same way as a normal variable, ie. the name representing the function, parens only used for calls. Because of this identical representation, we use & on our function/pseudo-variable to return the address.

Erm, then what do you use the name without () or & for? Assigning a value to the function?

  3. $ make

  4. Now that you mention it, I kinda miss playing Patience :( BTW, do you know of a decent pinball game on Linux?

How far do you get in LBreakout? I know I have the eye-hand coordination of a blind gold fish, but to me it seems a bit discouraging that the furthest I've gotten is level 3.

If you mean without "buy a continue", I don't think very long. But I'm no achiever (to stay in the MMORPG terminology), I don't care about the score I only play to waste some time.

As for the pinball, try happypenguin.

  5. Lately, different people have said to me "You play Planeshift, why are you still here?", like I am supposed to stop playing one game when I start playing the next. I just wonder, do people normally do that? Because where I come from I'm used to people having loads of games, playing different games depending on what they feel like playing that time of day.

    For me it's currently:

    Gran Turismo 4

    Planeshift

    LBreakout 2

    Tomb Raider 3

Einstein Puzzle (for when my brain needs to relax)

    Eternal-Lands

I'm sure that either Quake 3 Arena or Unreal Tournament 2004 will be back on the list at some time, but lately I haven't felt like that urge to kill stuff.

  6. Well, this goes with the question of: What types of things do explorers like? What do they do?

Explore. Meaning, new maps, secret places, quests, interactive items on maps and such...

This, if this is what you are thinking, does not need to be represented. The reason being, I know we need alot more of all those things, and we do not plan on leaving them with a lack of it :) What is the point of a group of people telling you things you already know and are already planning to do? Making new maps...that's already in the works.

You could say the same thing for the other categories.

Example: What types of things to killers like? What do they do?

Kill stuff. Meaning, new monsters, tough monsters, and PK maps.

  7. Posting in a new thread to avoid my concerns getting lost between nominations, and to avoid starting a discussion that could make it hard to find the nominations

It seems to me that this is not very representative. Remember Lyanna's post about four types of players? Fighters, achievers, socializers and explorers.

The fighters have 1 representative, number 1. Achievers have 4 representatives, number 2, 3, 4 and 5. Socializers may be represented by number 6, and number 7 doesn't really fit any of the four types.

So, we have achievers heavily over-represented, and explorers not represented at all. This strikes me as a bit un-balanced.

  8. I have a TFT with 700:1 contrast and 300cd/m² brightness - which is very good, but still EL is very dark on my TFT.

I have a TFT screen and I have no problems with darkness.

maybe you are used to it, I got used to it too, but in some areas it's really too dark. The problem is it doesn't look like night, the contrast is bad and everything is greyish

No, I didn't get used to it. It's just as bright as the CRT I had before.
