  2. very old players

    Oh hello there
  3. Greetings folks! Long time no see As some of you know (*hides from Acelon*), I have been occupied with uni for the past, hrmm, two years now, and thankfully everything has been running smoothly so far. Doing a games development degree is heaps of fun, it has its pros and cons, it's fantastic to be able to sketch, draw, model and animate anything that you can come up with in your imagination, but it's become hard to play a game without picking up on and criticising bad game design and mechanics Ok, now to the reason of this post. We do a mix between theory and practical classes at uni, and for one of my theory classes this semester I've decided to base my academic essay assignment on Eternal Lands On to the topic! \o/ What I need from you guys is for you to examine, discuss and give me your opinion and thoughts on how the environment of Eternal Lands provides resources for the development of emergent narratives (careful when I say environment, in a games degree you need to think outside the box, environment can mean both in-game and on the forums). What I mean by emergent narrative is, narrative or a driving story that isn't embedded into the game, but rather created by the player or players that play the game (ie. "emerging" in their minds). I haven't been around for so long so I've lost track of many things. So please lend me your help One thing I'd like to request is some feedback from Radu and any fellow developers regarding how Eternal Lands is designed to house player generated narratives and what impact this has on the game, and how important of a factor this is. MMORPGs are quite good when it comes to emergent narratives because the worlds are so rich and full of small details that can be interpreted by players in many ways. And online forums is such a great way to extend this narrative. It's so fascinating In the following post I'll provide some further information and examples on this topic, feel free to read it. If there's anything you're confused about, anything you want to ask me, please don't hesitate. Thank you for your time, and nice to see you all again! And hello to all the new players! Nice to meet you all and hope to see you in-game one day! Sistema. P.S. Those of you who want to be quoted in a proper way, please drop a name you want to be quoted under (nicknames not preferred).
  4. EL & Player Generated Narrative

Emergent narrative, a term introduced by designer Marc LeBlanc in his lecture "Formal Design Tools" at the 2000 Game Developers' Conference, refers to storytelling produced entirely by player actions and in-game events (Adams, 2010). Narrative can emerge from the simplest unintentional things, or can be specially and carefully designed by the developers to provide maximum potential of narratives being generated by players. The latter works very well in The Sims. Will Wright, creator of The Sims, has designed the game in such a way that narrative emerges from the player's actions, it emerges through gameplay; the player decides what the story of their sims will be, and uses the environment to enforce it. Those of you who have played Left 4 Dead will know that the difficulty is automatically adjusted according to the players' performance. However, it's not only the difficulty that being tweaked, Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve, states, "The events are trying to give [the players] a sense of narrative. We look at sequences of events and try to take what their actions are, to generate new sequences. If they've been particularly challenged by one kind of creature then we can use that information to make decisions about how we use that creature in subsequent encounters. This is what makes procedural narrative more of a story-telling device than, say, a simple difficulty mechanism." The Grand Theft Auto series plays an exceptional role in player generated narrative. How many of you have ditched the main missions and just hopped into a car and given yourself a story, quest and goal of your own? Exploring, seeing how fast you can go, running away from cops, running over strippers, do these sound familiar? So all these narratives are generated when the player interacts with the environment, with the game space. Eternal Lands takes this a step further, like all MMORPGs do, because the player is no longer interacting with only the environment, they are interacting with other people. There are many empty houses in many cities in Eternal Lands. What's great is players choose a house they like and take ownership over it (not officially, but in spirit). They spend time there, they invite friends over. They use the objects found in the house to create a story. This is one example I could think of, I'd like to hear everyone else's. Sistema.
  5. Art programs! :)

    Sumopaint is a great tool!
  6. Want to have a guild map?

Greetings, fellow guild leaders and members of Eternal Lands. If you are too lazy, just check the notes below, it's a small summary of what I will be explaining. I hope you've enjoyed my journey. I also hope I was able to answer most of your questions. If you have anything else to ask please do so, I will update this as I answer your questions. I'll be here waiting, or will I?... I know, you may think I'm a weirdo, but that's who I am. I might be a self controlled bot which belongs to Learner. I might even be a snowman in Trassian. Or wait, I might just be your imagination.... I might not even exist? *winks* Until we meet again, - Sistema Silverwish. * Clicks fingers and you suddenly snap back to reality. *
  7. Old/Modified Map Files

There has recently been complaints about not being able to see players/bots/creatures when they're actually there, or people reporting bugs such as their character falling ten meters beneath the ground in certain places. The main reason of this is because players are using outdated or illegal/modified map (.elm) files. The minimaps (or tab-maps, or what ever you call them), or in other words, the .bmp files located in your "Maps" folder would not affect being and not being able to see players/bots in anyway. If you cannot see players or bots in specific places, or if you suddenly fall ten meters below the ground while walking in-game (which means your maps differ from the server's) means that you are using outdated or illegal/modified .elm files, or have downloaded a map-pack that contain these files. As of now, using outdated or illegal unofficial map (.elm) files that have been altered from the official versions is officially ILLEGAL. (See: Eternal Lands In-Game Rules) If you are a player who uses unofficial .bmp (minimap) files, please keep in mind that they are unofficial and are not supported by Eternal Lands or its staff in any way. They can become outdated when new areas are added to the game. Bugs reported to us because of these files may result in punishments (we devote our time and go to the locations reported to us to find not the slightest hint of a bug, and it can get annoying). When we release client updates, players are usually advised to install a clean/fresh version of the client. When doing so, players tend to backup their old .bmp (minimap) files and paste them into the "Maps" directory in their new client. But some players copy the whole folder (or everything inside it) ALONG WITH the old .elm files. This is where most players go wrong, please be careful. When copying your maps from old clients to the newly released ones make sure you ONLY copy the .bmp files. Not doing so may get you in trouble. For those who manually alter the official maps and distribute them or use them for themselves, I'd suggest you stop immediately =) Altering maps to suit your liking is considered cheating and against the rules, because it helps you gain benefits other players don not have. If you are having troubles with maps (ie. not being able to see players/bots) I'd suggest completely uninstalling the EL client and installing a fresh version of the latest one released. If that doesn't help, you can post here or contact me via PM in-game or forums and we'll try to help (or ban ). Thank you. - Sistema. Edit: Do NOT mix up the .elm and .bmp files guys, they're both different things. The maps hosted on places such as EL-CEL and *R* websites are .bmp files and are NOT illegal, but are also not official.

  11. Xfire and EL

Hi folks, A long time ago a few players tried to get Eternal Lands working on Xfire and getting Xfire's official support. I had made a simple website to guide players. For a short period of time we had moderators broadcasting the url to this site. We also have an Eternal Lands Players guild on Xfire. It's almost been three years and unfortunately we still haven't had enough demand to get officially supported. For those who don't know what Xfire is: Xfire (pronounced ex-fire) is a freeware instant messaging service targeted at gamers, that also serves as a game server browser and has various other features (like voice-chat, in-game instant messaging, game tracking and many more). It's designed for Windows (Linux users see "Gfire", Mac OS X users see "Xblaze") and is rapidly developing. They have over 7 million registered users and is said to be essential for the everyday gamer. More information can be found on their website or here. I believe having Eternal Lands supported by Xfire will not only increase the number of Xfire users here in EL, but it will also lure new players to our world. So this is why I've decided to create a new, fresh thread, along with a tutorial on how to get EL (unofficially) working on Xfire (w00t w00t!). I'm doing this so we can all test it out, to see if it works, see if there's any bugs, and whether or not we can solve it. Just keep in mind that many features of Xfire won't be available until it's officially supported. So if you have Xfire, that's great. If not, you can download it, register and try helping out In order to get Xfire to detect Eternal Lands, you will need to do the following five simple steps: (make sure both EL and Xfire are closed before following the steps) 1. I came up with a code that gets EL working on Xfire, it's not perfect, but it works. In the directory your Xfire is installed in there is a file named 'xfire_games.ini', open it with your favourite text editor and scroll down to the end and add the following code, save it and close it. [99] LongName=Eternal Lands ShortName=el LauncherDirKey=HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Eternal Lands LauncherExe=el.exe DetectDirDefault=C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands ProcessWindowTitle=Eternal Lands Launch=%UA_LAUNCHER_EXE_PATH% %UA_LAUNCHER_EXTRA_ARGS% %UA_LAUNCHER_NETWORK_ARGS% InGameRenderer=OGL InGameFlags=ENABLE_MOUSE 2. Launch Xfire up and see if it has automatically detected Eternal Lands. Go to Tools > Launch. Is EL there on the list? If it is skip step 3. If not we will have to manually show Xfire EL's installation path. 3. We will have to manually add EL to Xfire's launch list now. Go to Tools > Options > Games tab. Expand the 'Not Installed' list and scroll down to where 'Eternal Lands' is and select it. Select 'Manual Setup', hit browse and find the path to Eternal Lands (ie. C:\Program Files\Eternal Lands\). Hit 'Apply' and then 'OK'. Yes, I know it doesn't have an icon because it's not officially supported by Xfire. 4. We will try launching EL through Xfire now. Go to Tools > Launch > Eternal Lands. If it does launch see if your Xfire Status (the message at the bottom of your Xfire window) shows 'Eternal Lands'. If it does, congratulations! Now the developers at Xfire have nothing left to do, the code is ready, they just have to get off their lazy arses and test the code out for themselves. 5. Now to see if Xfire In-Game works. Once EL has opened up and you've logged on hit ScrLk+X. You should get the In-Game menu to show up (if it doesn't work at first try going into FullScreen mode and out again). If it works, great job! Check if the Screenshot feature works as well, hit ScrLk+S for that. You can upload the screenshots onto your Xfire profile for everyone to see and show that EL works! Post here if you can't get it working and we'll see if we can help you. Those of you who are intelligent and computer literate, if you would like to try and tweak the code a bit here is a list of properties and variables available. My Xfire username is sistema, you can add me if you wish. You can also post here if you would like to join the EL Players guild on Xfire too. Here's a screenshot that shows the Xfire In-Game menu in Eternal Lands: I would like as many people as possible to test this out for me. Once we've confirmed that it's working we can start posting on the EL support thread on the Xfire forums. There's no other way for EL to get supported guys, we need to show that we have demand, and I simply can't do this alone. So please, bump the topic there as often as you can. ** I would also like to request people who have got it working to send Pilot51, an Xfire regular known and acknowledged by the Xfire devs, a private message through the Xfire forums saying that you vote for EL to be supported. He has a list of games which want support, and how many people have voted for it here. Thanks. ** Roja and Radu, I want your opinions on this too, please. I've seen a few games where the head developer of the game got in contact with Xfire devs to sort of speed things up, it was done in a week or two, lol. If you would like to support us, here's a few things you can do: How To Support Us. Thank you, - Sistema.
  12. Xfire and EL

I've accepted you, Gossamer Well, congratulations to all EL/Xfire users It took a while, but better late than never, right? I'd like to thank everyone who posted in the EL thread on the Xfire forums, Xfire wouldn't have added EL if it weren't for you guys! I think all the players who use Xfire should leave a thank you post on their forums: http://www.xfire.com/xf/modules.php?name=F...pic&t=16022 (that's our thread there, created 3 years ago!! >.<) Because there's a zillion games out there and we're quite lucky (after three years?) to have been added. Anyway, if anyone else uses Xfire and wants to be added to the EL Players Guild on Xfire just drop a message in this thread. And if you don't use it, maybe you should check it out? Hope you all enjoy it ^^ Now get those hours coming! Thanks! Sistema
