  1. Trouble connecting to server

Well done! :-) As for the configuration file, you actually can change the host and port where to connect - just, not from that file. I think the #server_address and #server_port are no longer supported (they used to be, up to client version 1.6 more or less). The new (and more flexible) system is as follows: you have a file server.lst in your configuration directory; non-comment lines inside it have the form ID Config Dir Address Port Description (to be used for server selection window) For example, the main server is configured as main main game.eternal-lands.com 2000 Main game server whereas Learner's proxy (a well-known and reliable proxy service explicitly geared towards EL) is configured as lrnr-main main proxy1.other-life.com 443 Learner's redirection service for the Main game server You can just add an entry for your home Linux box in there, and then run the EL client with a single argument, being the ID you assigned to your server (e.g., home-proxy).
  2. Trouble connecting to server

It seems to me that your library's Internet is not that open; all the symptoms seem to indicate that port 2000 is blocked. Maybe the library is only offering HTTP service (i.e, web, port 80) or such? An easy test, since you are well into it: telnet game.eternal-lands.com 2000 If you get a welcome message, then you can accesso port 2000 on the server and all is well. If, as I suspect, you cannot - then there is a firewall blocking port 2000 (and possibly others), either at your machine, or on the library's router, or even at their provider. Let us know what the commands above returns. Edit: The PUTTY tunnel wouldn't help of course, since you are still connecting from your machine to port 2000 on the server. You would need an intermediate host who has a non-blocked route to the server. Your attempt above is: EL on localhost--(2000)-->PUTTY "client" on localhost--(22)-->PUTTY "server" on localhost--(2000)-->game.eternal-lands.com. You would need: EL on localhost--(don't care)-->PUTTY "client" on localhost--(22)-->SSH "server" on goodhost--(2000)-->game.eternal-lands.com. Notice that in the first case, the bold path between your machine and game.eternal-lands.com:2000 still blocked. And if you can open it, you can more easily do EL on localhost--(2000)-->game.eternal-lands.com. Good luck!
  3. wb forums

It looks fine to me. Possibly it's an issue with the subtle colour shades that signify "read" or "new" in this skin?
  4. Smurf for Mod!

    Amen.
  5. EL & Player Generated Narrative

Hello Sistema, nice to see you around! I would certainly mention the creation of new NPCs by players. According to your "thinking outside the box", it is certainly a peculiar feature of EL that players can join the development team and write NPCs, and in so doing, literally invent history, politics, religion of maps and races. Acelon will be able to tell you all about it, provided he gets a new PC that is!
  6. War in the cold

Hope you liked the (almost) all-white, frozing, blinding invasion of cold creatures in cold maps? From white rabbits to ice dragons, we had it all: single combat, multi combat, spread across large maps, packed in tight places, invasion in safe maps and in PK areas, lurking in the ground or flying high above warriors... and no caps. You are welcome to post comments and suggestions, or just to tell what your favourite part was!
  7. Android client

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what's the point of having a phone client, if you have to be connected to your desktop machine anyway? If you are talking a cable, I see no use for the phone. If you are talking a wireless connection, then it would be much better to modify the server, or maybe a service such as Learner's proxy which could send keep-alives to the server, while not requiring them on the client (=phone) side. Asking people to have their desktop machine always on and reachable from outside (hence, they would need a fixed IP and no firewall protection) is a little too much imo. But apart from the technical issues, the point is that keep-alives are there for a reason: so that the server can know if something went wrong on the client side. Maybe their use could be reduced, but I don't think we can do without them entirely. Eclipse has been working flawlessly here. It might take a while to setup, but I would rather standardize on that, rather than having to work in a distributed team with people using different development environments...
  8. Android client

I have an Android Phone (connected via USB in debug mode as I write this), SDK installed, wrote a book on Java, and have a basic understanding of the Android APIs... but I'm normally terribly time-constrained. Had even investigated OpenGL ES 1.0 some time ago; it COULD work well enough with devices slightly faster than the Motorola Droid (i.e., all those that came out in the last few months, and all future ones). Might even buy an Android tablet as soon as a good one comes out. I cannot say I can take the lead, but I should be able to help if a small team can start working on this. We need convince Fedora that she needs not finish his MD thesis
  9. Harvesting

Nice necro indeed, and I see the problem had been well researched already in 2005. The implementation of client-side poses should really help minimize the server changes (but still, it would increase overall data traffic, which could be unwelcome to those players on capped or low-band links). A cheap solution could be to run animations ONLY for the character at distance 1 from the resouce, maybe only if they willingly take the right orientation (i.e., +/- 45 degrees from the resource), while allowing harvesting as normal (but without animation) at all other positions.
  10. Character creation problems

There is no embedded list of non-allowable names (as far as I know), but it is certainly possible that a character exists without Gossip knowing about it. In fact, Gossip stores information about a character as soon as the character enters her field of vision (it is a third-party service after all, not a part of the game itself), and it is totally possible that a character has been created and "abandoned" without ever leaving Isla Prima or meeting Gossip in person. You can check if a certain name is taken by accessing the URL http://game.eternal-lands.com/view_user.php?user=[your user name here], e.g. http://game.eternal-lands.com/view_user.php?user=lazerus for your account.
  11. Why iam banned?

Recording a sequence of mouse movements and clicks, so that it can be repeated automatically over and over, is considered macroing. Full details on Wikipedia. Using a hacked client or a bot is another (more sophisticated) form of macroing. We need not discuss the historical details here. I have no reason to doubt you have a brother, in fact it is totally possible that it was him who was macroing. My point above was that which person did it is immaterial. How do you know nobody else play on your character? You were not in the room to tell. Maybe your brother played. It's better to ask him when he returns after work, no? If you were not in the room, your brother was not playing, who was there trying to mix health essences, every 3 seconds, for an hour or more, ignoring my four (4) messages at 23:57, 0:07, 0:09, 0:24, and continuing mixing (and failing) even after being teleported off storage range (and thus being out of ingredients), even after being teleported to Isla Prima, and then - to the joy of the bystanders - dropping mixed stuff to the ground, since your storage window had been forcibly closed a little while earlier? BTW, I have the 34 HEs, 10 Silver Ore, 5 Chrysanthemum that you dropped, I will return them in due time. If you have further information please feel free to post.
  12. Why iam banned?

I am afraid your brother has macroed in your absence, which however was substantially longer than "some minutes". This of course could have happened without your knowledge or authorization. You might want to ask him about what happened exactly, then report here. Till then, the standard penalty for macroing applies, which is a 1-month ban on the character. You can post back in a month to have the character restored, and in the meantime you can create another character if you so wish. Notice that this policy is designed to make up for the unfair advantage that a player resorting to macroing has over "regular" players who play according to the rules. Full details about the ban policy are in this post. Also on a personal note, while I have been known to develop paternal feelings towards certain pieces of program code at times, I would not go as far as to call them brothers and sisters. Certain people in the past have claimed a large array of relatives and pets doing all kinds of mischief in their absence. This is not necessary; regardless of whether it was you or your brother (or anyone else) launching the macro, the penalty is applied to the character, not to the player, so which real person is responsible is immaterial. While waiting for your brother's return, you might want to familiarize yourself with the in-game rules, and especially rule 4 (Do not give out your password) about character sharing and rule 5 (No illegal multiplaying) about using multiple characters, then depending on the particular technique used one between rule 20 (No illegal clients) if a modified client was used, or 21 (No macroing or automation) if a simple mouse recorder was used, or 22 (Bots must be declared) if an ad-hoc program was written; in the case of your brother, I would suggest 21. Finally, rule 24 (No skirting punishment) and 28 (Do not cheat). With particular reference to rule 24, I confirm here that you can create another character to play during the next month, and decide at the end of the period whether to keep it or have Drapter restored to you. This should cover it all - until and unless you have further info from your brother.
  13. Eternal Limericks!

It happened today that I was mixing at Raven, and Dreamyn noticed that I was the author/owner of Rraisa. She wanted to show some appreciation, so we shared a bottle of wine, and I proposed her to deliver a toast... and here are the results: Ah, poetry!
  14. The Kilaran Clash

We will have a contest in Kilaran Field in a few minutes. Here are the rules: - I will be somewhere in Kilaran Field. To win a prize, you have to trade with me and hold the trade open with no interruption for 1 minute. If you manage to do so, you can claim a prize. - No level limitations, everything goes, any breakage is on you, using BroD will certainly not make you new friends. - No alts. Using alts in PK to spy or "oversee" what's going on is a direct violation of Rule 5. This notice shall serve as a public warning, I will proceed to lock if I see players being unfair by using alts. - One prize per person (not per character); if you won a prize, you are out of the competition for successive rounds. We have 7 prizes (hence, 7 winners): A.) 1 spear, donated by Anax B.) 1 iron greaves, donated by Frenzy C.) Titanium shield, 60 Ice Arrows, donated by Yethq D.) 1 set of enriched essences (ELE, EWE, EME, EFE, EDE), donated by Circe E.) 1 crossbow, donated by MattewF F.) 1 Iron greaves, 1 Iron cuisses, donated by newhope G.) 1000 HE, 500 SRS, 15 Rings of DP, 3 Rings of Power, donated by LittleLooter Winners will be able to choose a prize of their liking from those remaining in the prize pool. Edit: and we have the winners! A.) Felkku B.) Felkku C.) _KiLLeR_GuY_ D.) newhope E.) smurf F.) stivy G.) blaze1 Notice: the one prize per person rule was lifted for the very last prize, hence Felkku could win two prizes. Any comment, suggestion or criticism is welcome - just post in this thread.
  15. cANNOT START GAME

No mistake on your part; what you see is just the initial interface for creating your character. I remember when I started playing I was also confused, exactly on the same tune, till I discovered that the first two icons in the bottom bar are used, respectively, to choose your name and password and to establish your look. My advice: click on the second icon (the one with an eye), then use the controls in the window to choose your race, hair, face, color, clothes, etc. When you are satisfied, click on the first icon (the one with a standing man) and chose your name and password; confirm the password, then press Done... and you will be inside the real game. From that point on, you can type "@" followed by a question to get live help on any aspect of the game. Also pay attention to the hints that will periodically appear on screen for the first few hours, they give good advice and many tips. See you online!
  16. Why is it...

Just a general comment, mainly addressed at the original poster - not talking about any reply in particular. In the Suggestions forum, there is only a set of reader that counts - and that's the Developers. If a suggestion looks good to Radu (the main developer of EL), it will get implemented, regardless of any negative comment. If an idea looks bad to Radu, it will not be implemented, regardless any positive comment. If an idea is good and has lots of positive comments, but Radu is busy with something else, it might never be implemented, for reasons that have nothing to do with the merit of the idea, or with the personal qualities of the poster. So, don't take those comments in your thread too personally. It's just people expressing their opinion, to which they are entitled as you and me are. If the attitude or language they use is less than ideal, consider it just a feature of the medium / an indication of their bad command of the language / a sign of frustration and spitefulness on their part / a hint that human nature is fundamentally twisted. Or, the respondents may raise valid points which at first sight you overlooked. Whatever it is, there is no reason to take it too personally, the human race is what it is. Hence, please, keep suggestions coming!
  17. So you liked today's invasion? Or you absolutely detested it? Now it's time to speak up. Any (civil) comment, suggestion, advice, complaint is welcome. If you want to lodge a Rosto Return Form, please file in the appropriate thread, second to the left after the ladies bathroom.
  18. Modding a picture.

Ask and you shall receive. (not that I am a pro at graphics, but I can at least try). Notice that the original rose was very low resolution (100x100 pixels), so enlarging it will cause some degradation. The large version below is 150x150, I wouldn't go much beyond that. Enjoy!
  19. Xaq mums in TG not counted right

As far as I can tell, the number of picks is counted for the quest (i.e., getting the completion message); when delivering to Xaquelina, she will take the required amount of items (at that point, it doesn't matter if the items are from the right spot or from elsewhere, or even from storage, as long as you have the required amount in your inventory). I am pretty sure that it works that way for Excavator perk/cape. As for multi-item flowers, it used to work as I described, but I haven't tested recently - it's entirely possible that the text of the message has been updated, so that when Xaquelina says 100 bsf, the actual counter is initialized to 50 picks, to offset the multi-pick effect. I will re-check once Miss X gives me one of those to harvest. However, if Sir_Odie is right all the discussion above is not relevant, and it might be a problem with the map object used for the quest instead.
  20. Xaq mums in TG not counted right

This might have to do with the fact that for quest purposes the number of picks is counted, not the number of items obtained? It is the same as for harvest xp; the first 120 picks count, not the first 120 items. In particular, when using an excavator cape or harvesting multiple-items-per-pick stuff (such as several flowers), you may end up having to harvest many more items than requested (but the number of harvest actions required will be the expected one)... Maybe the total number of chrysanthemums you harvested, in the various batches, was 160 (normally) or 320 (if wearing an excavator cape)? Those would correspond to 80 picks.
  21. Nicely played on this one; in fact I was feeling uneasy that Howard's legacy could be still felt. I will move to Australia with better vibes next month! In contrast, our government has put out a proposal for public comment about Internet Governance (on the social side, not technical): of course, put out on the 4th of August, with 30 days for comments, just by chance while everyone and his granny in the country is on a beach...
  22. EL Urban Legends

It was ttlanhil, iirc. And here is my favourite myth: that high-level monsters can drop NMTs. . . . . What do you mean, "they really can"?
  23. 196776 Health? Has TigerClaw become a bot?!

I think that may be a different issue, just the new maximum not being correctly capped at #reset time. Here we have a nastier case, where some update packet sent from server to client is either miscalculated, or sent at the wrong time during an engagement.
  24. 196776 Health? Has TigerClaw become a bot?!

I think so, but possibly TC's accurate steps for reproducing the bug will help Radu in finding and fixing the cause - it has been pretty elusive so far. We will have to wait till teh God is back from vacations though!
  25. 196776 Health? Has TigerClaw become a bot?!

I think this might be an instance of an old well-known bug, whereas the health shown in the health bar over you head is obtained by summing the delta to the current value (both positive, as in restore, and negative, as in damage), whereas the value in the bottom bar is obtained by looking directly at the character stats (and is the REAL one). It seems under some circumstances, an invalid value is sent as delta, then interpreted with wrong signedness, so your 65568 is actually 65536+32 (i.e., 2^16+32), with 32 being your REAL health. I have had my share of sudden deaths with toadstool poisoning due to mismatching values shown above your head and in the bottom bar... and the rule of thumb is, bottom bar wins. For details (and possibly a fix)... only Radu can tell :-)
