Gargoyles

Easy pickings they said. The castle is full of treasures, they said. Somehow they forgot to mention the guardians. Do you wonder what I am talking about? Let me tell you a true story.
Some years ago I was still moving up within the League, and I was approached by my masters to do a test, they said. I was to explore and steal a black book in the old Vermor Castle. So I went. It was late afternoon when I got there, and I couldn’t help notice that some of the statues in the gardens were oddly placed indeed. Could it be some kind of trick or perhaps a secret entrance hidden in one of the statues? I couldn’t help wondering, so I began searching the odd statues resembling some kind of monsters. The sun was setting so I had to be quick about it before I turned my attention to the castle itself. The first two statues gave nothing, but the third it pointed somewhere. I was sure of it. As I examined the statue closer, the sun dropped below the horizon. As I touched the statue I felt a tremble. The statue moved! And then there was pain, a lot of pain. The statue had come to life. I looked around and saw that the other two, now living, statues were moving in my direction. Then my friends, I did the only sensible thing-I ran. Later I learned that I had encountered the living stone, more commonly known as the Gargoyle guardians of Vermor Castle.
- Adira, master thief of the Portland chapter of Pilfering League.
History
It is believed that the gargoyles were created by the legendary King Vermor, as guardians of his castle. Never did they venture outside the castle until after his disappearance. They now wander White Stone in the dark of the night turning into stone statues during the day. Some say they are still loyal and wander in search of their master, who knows if they will ever find him...
Physiology
The gargoyles are magical in nature, animated stone. Their stone bodies provide good protection against attacks, and even if some of them have wings they cannot fly. Most scholars believe that they weigh too much to fly, while some think it is intentional.
The gargoyles come in three sizes; a smaller one with wings, a bigger one without wings, and finally a large one with huge wings. They range from about four feet tall to some eight feet of height.
Society
When King Vermor mysteriously vanished, most people claim he died (yet a corpse remains to be found) his Gargoyles were freed of his control. Since gargoyles act they do not think, and are therefore incapable of worshipping any gods. However, they are believed to search for their former master and creator and while doing so they show remarkable skill and coordination.
Standard tactics of the gargoyle is to act as a statue and strike when an attack is not expected. If killed they will be reduced to a pile of stone, but after a short while they will reanimate, ready to attack again.
