100% CPU/distorted sound Linux Mint 17.1

Recommended Posts

sometimes for a while, on EL only , the CPU on my machine goes to 100% and the sound gets very distorted.

After a while, it goes away.

Anyone have any ideas?

I run Arch linux and don't have this trouble. I use the git version of EL client.

Have you tried running the client from terminal and seeing if you get any error messages? Also, what does your error log in ~/.elc/log/main_xxxxxx.log say? And Alsa or PulseAudio?

I also limit my FPS to 45, too.

I see those 100% CPU bursts as well, but haven't noticed sound distortions (not using music though). No error messages in terminal.

What I did notice was a large part of the CPU activity (about half) marked as 'system' activity.

Aislinn: No errors shown in the logs from the time the problem happens.

I think I am running pure alsa these days.

Not sure where the git cli8ant program is..I'll go looking for it

The git client is just one that’s built from the latest client source code, the source code is located in a git repository on github here. There have been a lot of changes to the client since the last release including a lot of fixes for sound, you will get all these changes if you build from git. If you don't want to build the client yourself, you can get a packaged version that will work on Linux Mint from my launchpad account. There are instructions here. I checked a few months ago that the Ubuntu instructions work fine for Mint. Install the standard client first, then add the development version packages as described at the end of the page.

Manage to stumble through git and dependency hell and the client finally built no problems. It runs a lot faster and so far hasn't gone weird on me.

That's good. Too late now, but for others there is a thread for compiling from source here. The second post from me has the additional instructions for getting the build dependencies for Ubuntu. Those are the same for Debian and Mint too.
