How would i go about starting ranging?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so i think i want to start ranging, but i dont know what to wear, what kind of bow/arrows to buy, or even where i should train for good xp. If you have any suggestions, maybe this could turn into a guide for other people starting it.

Hannibal on PK server

#EDIT i forgot to ad this, but what should my PP's be spent on as well? atm, im a fighter with only p/c/v... is that good? or should/would i ahve to spend on different things.

Best (fastest) way to train ranging is PvP ranging ...

For the start i'd go to better lit areas (it will give you less exp, but you will hit more)

Also it's better to hit 9/10 times at 18exp as hit 3/10 at 40exp :icon13:

I am training with short bow - it's cheap, accuracy doesn't matter while PvP training and it shoots quite fast.

Everything that makes it easier for you to hit (like night visor ...) will lower your exp..

You will probably level it to maybe 20 max and abandon it again, so don't waste any pps on attributes that are not required for combat.

There are plenty posts about ranging in the forums already, my advice would be to read them.

Ok this is how i got my ranging lvls

0-8 ranged bears in NC with short bow

8-14 Shoot at the lupine bush. You harvest and sell to shop and buy arrows and repeat but when something comes close shoot it.

14-20 Shoot ogres at the ida mine. Not the orc side the ogre side. The place were u have to climb the rope and then there is a cave. Stand on the platform in the cave and a orc spawns there and shoot it. If you stand on the edge of the platform the ogres can atk you tho.

Thats about as far as i got. I also train with short bow and training arrows.

PvP ranging is also very fast but more expensive because you dont get drops.

When i was around lvl 15 range i set up a training system in ida. I would shoot the ogres then when i was outa arrows i would harvest lupines at the ida entrance to evtr. One of the bushes there is a X3. Then i would sell to the flower shop and buy arrows shoot the ogres and i repeated.

You could probably get better ways to train from the higher lvl rangers tho.

About the PPs i say,

High reasoning for perception and rationality and high p/c so you can carry your arrows.

If you have plenty of gc's, go pvp route all the way from 0 to 20, it goes really fast. Use only xbow since it doesn't break that easy and the bolts are half of EMU of arrows.

If your budget is limited, train as much as possible on rats, shoot them from 5 steps away max. Sell tails, meat, bones, buy more bolts.

As you advance, shoot other creatures with a little hp and useful drops like falcons, hawks, racoons, skunks, beavers, etc.

Take advantage of invasions and shoot creatures that fighters bash, as well as those that are pinned to the walls, cliffs, etc.

Evaluate your training methods by checking exp/100 bolts used. It should be above 1k, if it is not, you are wasting gc's.

Raise your perception as much as possible.

Do not take any perks before you are REALLY sure that you will devote yourself to this skill lon term (so far there are no removal stones for ranging perks).

Bear in mind that reaching level 40 will cost you roughly 800 kgc (drops can compensate a bit, but if you go pvp route, you'll not only have no drops but also use a lot of he's and sr's). Ranging takes also a lot of time since your "training exp" will be rougly 12-15 per shot (that also means the poorest OA exp/hour of all skills).

Well, that's my 2gc's , good luck with your ranging.

Bolts are half EMU, but also xbow is MUCH slower then short bow, so while you shoot 400 bolts, i can shoot 800 arrows

Important in pk, irrelevant in training, since :

a/ you won't be able to carry 800 arrows (this is 1600 EMU), so you'll be running to sto while I still will be shooting

b/ at training your time limiting factor is waiting for targets, not shooting speed

How comes?

We go together into pk area to pvp, our EMU's are equal.

You carry 400 arrows, I carry 800 bolts.

I assume you are not training with the elven bow (which is dumb) but with training one, so the speed difference is not that big. You might be able to shoot 400 arrows while I shoot 350 bolts.

Then what ? You are out of arrows and I have 450 more to go.

I'd be wasting my time waiting for you to go to sto and restock.

Of course you can say about hyperbags, etc. but that would be overcomplicating sinmple tasks and absolutely unnecessary.

Anyway, let everyone do whatever suits her/him the best, I'm past pvp stage anyway

True, but you can take a short bow and arrows too and we will train faster, because trips to/from storage take less time then you shooting 400 bolts ...

ummm ... no :)

short bow shot takes a bit over 1 second, xbow shot (with correct timing) 2 seconds, where did you got with such results ?

I'm still convinced that the best time efficiency is with xbow but of course as I said above, no point to switch to xbow if you prefer short bow .... there are several ways to skin the cat and no point to prove that there is only one valid

sorry to join this off topic discussion

but short bow is faster than 1 sec per shot and the little damage it does makes it ideal for training pvp or high level critters only letdown are the 'heavy' arrows. For invasions xbow could be better because it might be hard to get to a spot where you can pin monsters.

If you choose the hunting way (and more fun way) for training go for xbow, long or recurve.

xbow when range in small areas where you don't have to run after the critters like ip rat cave and because they are one hit kills speed doesn't matter. Stand on one good spot kill a couple get the bags and starts again.

Use long or recurve when you are after moving targets like rabbits, snakes... they do more damage so more drops for you and you are faster ready to shoot.

For beginners an easy but slow way to train is shooting gargoyles at daytime they don't move unless being attacked. Get 6 steps away from them shoot, walk 6 steps away, shoot again ..till they die.

Well, it is not exactly off-topic, since it answers one of the questions posted - "what kind of bow/arrows to buy" :)

At low ranging level when pvp training, the damage difference between short bow and crossbow is very small. What was making the biggest difference in number of restores was .... a luck with MoL :( So wear MoL always, it helps a lot.

When training without MoL, a damage difference between short bow and xbow with 250 arrows/bolts can cost you no more than one additional restore when using bolts compared to arrows (usually 5:4 restores ratio, but obviously it also depends on you restore spell power and overall hp).

As to the number of arrows vs bolts being shot - I was carrying 500 bolts while my ranging partner using a short bow was carrying 250 arrows. When he was done shooting his 250, I was done with 200-220. Then he had to run to sto and obviously he had to do that twice as often as me, so we were losing a lot of time. All those problems were gone when we were both using crossbow, and number of trips to sto was halved. This was more effective overall. Obviously a place where you shoot is important as well - if you have a guild map close to sto, all those EMU considerations lose their importance, but when you use a distant pk area far from sto, the more arrows you carry, the better.

According to the encyclopedia, they both do 5-8 damage. I also thought I noticed differences in damage between the bows. Is the encyclopedia wrong?

I'm talking about overall damage per 100 shots. Due to higher accuracy you'll hit with crossbow more often.

Please remember that the damage increases when you advance in ranging. Initially the damage will be similar, the more advanced you get, the more you will need to restore when using crossbow for pvp. With time and levels it gets more expensive than if you've used training bow. Then it is a matter of preference - I preferred less trips to sto rather than less restores, so I was using crossbow, but if you are on a low budget or have a guild map with pk area close to sto, you might be better off using training bow for pvp.
