The Hunter's Journal

Recommended Posts

Today is the 2nd Aurun, in Seedar, year 0003

When I picked up my steel long sword and leather gear, I was expecting a rainy day in The Evergreen Forest. As I predicted, the rain brought the deer and the foxes toward the western side of the woods. It is a strange behavior of the animals to do so, and I am sure scientists are working on why. As I crept along a rocky ledge, I spotted a small herd of deer, about 3 or 4 of them picking leaves and berries of nearby plants. I came within ten steps of them when one looked at me and started running. I managed to lunge out and strike the closest one, mortally wounding it. As the deer was dying, as expected, the foxes came and I dropped two of them before the rest retreated. A deer and two foxes is great for a married dwarf with one child. The meat and furs will feed and clothe us.

I was to go out again today into the forest and try to bag some more animals. I found two deer in different spots today, and I was very happy because they were does, which typically taste better. I took them and to my surprise, a wolf came along. I have never seen one there but perhaps there is a small den now. I killed that wolf and skinned my catch. As I was skinning I met another hunter, this one a young man of maybe 30 years, as opposed to my 50, and he had a bear pelt on. I thought about it for a second, then asked him how he got it. He said he got the bear and a deer in Whitestone in the mountains. Next week, I'll go there and see what I can get.

With my fur on instead of leather, I went to the Elavro Mountains instead of the forest. 'It's closer to home,' I figured, since I live in Nordcarn. When I was just a boy of 10 or 12, my father took me to the mountains up here in the winter and we got lost. We lived off the land for three days once we found a pass that wasn't snowed in. We had eaten plants he showed me that were safe and killed the deer and rabbits that were here. I reminisce those days when my father and I hunted, but he died a few years before the Great War. Such a young dwarf my father was when he died. Only 83 years old. But anyways, in the mountains I bagged seven white rabbits, a fox that must've been kicked out of the Alchemy School nearby, and one mountain lion that nearly tore me to shreds. I also saw a wonderful black bear, probably young and very strong, pawing at a high bush with some sweet berries on it. The bear never saw me as far as I could tell, so I might be back another day.

My wife was becoming such a pain! She keeps trying to keep me from hunting out here and help her and Kagen, my son, tend to the farm. It's really just a family farm, nothing big enough to sell to neighbors usually, unless Aluwen blesses us with a good harvest and we can make a deal with the smith who lives next door. When I went back to the mountains, I saw what I presume was the same bear, with three small cubs and a mate. I knew where they were now, but killing one of the bears brings the others after me. I left them alone and went out to get three rabbits and another fox. I managed to sell one of the rabbits to a very old merchant elf, who was missing his right arm. Once I brought the rabbits home, I went back out to see if the bear left. I now saw the male bear strutting around finding a bee hive. I tossed one of my smaller swords at him, hitting it square in the ear. The bear stood on it's hind legs, turned at me and charged once, but I dove out of the way and cut it in the chest with my steel longsword. The bear must've been weakened, because he started to run away, only to fall within a few steps. The bear was an excellent catch for today, and for the next while I'm going to stick to northern Nordcarn for some wolves, pumas, and deer, and also plant those potatoes my wife is pestering me about.

Hey you're definetly getting better!

I think what you should do though is to put some more meaning into these journal entries. No one wants to read only about a hunter getting his prey. You should add more cultural references, more "daily life in a dwarf family" happenings, adding stuff about all memebers of the family. Maybe dwarfs have a home life different than that of what we humans know. Maybe it's just small things however, but those small things can be worth writing about if they're interesting.

I wrote nearly an extra month and my internet lost it's connection...I think I'll just try another idea.

oh :icon13:

Always best to do your writing in an external program...like notepad, or a word processor, whatever you're comfortable in. Don't trust the internet browsers(although usually you can get your stuff back if you press the back button).
