It would make more sense if degraded magical items just had magic removed rather than turning into degraded items when they exist.

Examples:

  • Serpent Sword of Fire would become an ordinary Serpent Sword
  • Steel Plate Mail of Healing would become Steel Plate Mail

The player is already losing a rare magic item usually at bad time, why make it worse?

I think when a serpent sword of fire breaks, it should turn back to modable serpent sword.

And the modable swords should degrade back to original ones and you should make modable swords yield-able.

Changing to modable serpent stone is worse!  You cannot mix magical serpent swords.

...and you should make modable swords yield-able.

I've wanted this for years.  They should have slightly better stats than the un-modable version, and degrade to the un-modable version.

nah i see them as a glowing ball of sword in its primeval magical status, you wouldn't want to hold that

I agree with Saxum, it would make a lot more sense
