More single player choices?

Recommended Posts

Today I had an idea for an instance that would be ment for 1 or small teams (1-3 players).

One of the first peoe to respond said that it is bad for games like this to promote single play styles in the game because it takes from multi team play styles.

I would like to know more thoughts along this line of thinking please from as many people as will comment.

My thoughts are...

This game, at least right now does not have a lot of players actively playing all at the same time all the time. It seems to focus active player time during use and euro work days ends. For me this sucks because my work day end is when usa is being to go to bed for the next day of work and my main time of play is when usa is on there way or just starting work. This makes it hard for me to find other people to do team based play with, aka instances/invasions/invances. In fact this make it hard for me to even find anyone not afk on at all. Others I have talked with have had the same experiences as I but at other times in the day. I think more single play events/tasks would be a good addition to the game for people who have strange work hours.

I think my idea of a progressively harder instance that challeges your speed and fighting ability would be a lot of fun and give me something to do when other people are not on.

Remembering some of your actions from the past, the lack of players might not be the only reason you have trouble finding a team for e.g. instance.

Players like Raistlin did/do instances regularly at US night/Euro work hours (i.e. when the number of on-line players is the lowest).

I think my idea of a progressively harder instance that challeges your speed and fighting ability would be a lot of fun and give me something to do when other people are not on.

And that's one flaw in your proposal right there: it's what's good for you, and not necessarily what's good for the game as a whole.

What Orick is feeling is a symptom of one of the biggest areas in need of improvement in EL: End Game Content (EGC)

A quick and dirty definition of EGC is the stuff you do in game to have fun after you finish story/questing/levelling.

Currently EL has a few activities that fall in this category: Nenorocit, Badaran, Leonard, and Pear hunting, High-End Mixing, Instances, Invasions, Invances, PK.

All of these activities require a team/other players except Badaran, Leonard and Pear hunting, High-End Mixing, and Invasions.

However out of these remaining activities, Pear hunting can only be done 1x every 6 hours, Leonard hunting can only be done 50% of the time, Invasions will not get started without a team and will typically come at most 1x per day, and High-End Mixing lasts a total of 10 seconds once you have ingredients (And generally the ingredients are not all something you can obtain just by working towards it (see enriched essences, binding stones, serpents stones etc).

So the only EGC you can log on and do from start to finish by yourself consistently is Badaran.

I think this is what Orick is trying to point out, that if you are not interested in levelling there is not much you can do if you just want to have fun for an hour before going back to RL.

To Oricks specific idea, a 1-3 person instanced invasion which you can start just like a regular instance would add another EGC which is good for the game. However, just like everything in game the risk-reward-fun must be balanced for it not to ruin the game.

But we should not focus only on fighting EGC, since that is only one aspect of EL. An example of a rounder solo instance:

Start at NPC who tells you an item or harvestable you must obtain within a set time limit (1 hour perhaps). You instantly fail if you withdraw any items from any bags or storage or complete a trade with another player. So you must do it all from scratch as quickly as possible.

Basically juat things to do for fun when your friends arent online.

Well put, though I miss Joker hunting in your list ;) The latter is not really possible when a c2 invasion is going on, and not necessarily EGC either.

With the frequent c2 global invasions there is even less for non fightersto do in EL, a 1 hr mixer challenge sounds like an interesting idea, a small team/solo fighting challenge as well. Profit should not be the motivating factor, but fun and challenge.

Another idea might be small explorer challenges. To find an item, monster, harvestable or NPC based on some clues, like "find the nightshade in a map that has leopards". Similar to Haidir, Xaquelina perfume quest and other fixed quests, but randomly generated. Clues are not unique and good knowledge of the game is required to puzzle out the clues and find the objective. Reward could be a few thousand xp and few hundred gc, nothing farmable.

I just want to make sure I understand you Revi. Are you saying that just my idea is bad for EL or the idea of more single play altogether is a bad idea?

Neither.

What I'm saying is that you sound like you propose something because it's good for you personally,

and you are not asking yourself what would be the effect for the game as a whole.

That said, I'm also not really sure we need large single player projects. I'd rather see some additional possibilities for 2-3 players,

and not only for the pure fighter builds (although I realise that those are most of the ones in end of game)

Those sound like nice things indeed :)

Maybe that could even be made a player-to-player challange:

* one player (the quest giver) gives the location (map+coordinates and a hint text to an NPC). And those quests are then in a list or queue available for other players to hunt.

* The quest giver would get a reward when the location is found only, but maybe lower reward when found by too many

* The questing people would get a reward when they find the location

Well, this coming update there will be some really cool (I hope) end game content. Won't give you more details about it yet, but it will be in the form of a new mob.
