5% chance of being poisoned? I don't think so!

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry if this post covers other posts. I did do a search and could not find anything that covered my questions.

I don't know if this is a problem just with me...but.. I get poisoned a lot. I mean alot. I was getting poisoned from eating toads so much I decided to keep track of it.

Basically I counted how many times I was poisoned and how many toads I ate. After 1000 toads I was poisoned 187 times. That is much higher than 5%. I read in another post that astro doesn't affect toad poisoning. So is it just bad luck? Is there a way the devs can have the ai read the number of toads eaten/poisonings and make things even out?

I seriously want some evening out. In the last 1/2 hr alone I was getting poisoned every 4th or 5th toad.

I know I sound like I'm whining.. but come on... 5% should be 5% not 18%. Maybe toughness can be taken into acount and decrease the damage from toads. Or maybe the devs can make an antidote cape or ring. Maybe we could cook them and lessen the odds of being poisoned. Just some ideas is all.

Thanks for reading my rant...

one very confuzzled toadeater

Maybe the random generator has a preference for the number 2? ;p

18.7% of the times being poisoned is quite high. What about changing the number 2 to some other value to make sure 2 isn't pulled more? ;) I also had the idea I was poisoned a lot of toads, so I kept mixing with FP.

Better make it if(my_rand(20)==my_rand(20)) then, else people are gonna complain that if(my_rand(20)==13) isn't random enough either, and on top of that cause extra bad luck to them!

There is no bias towards any number, I made extensive tests a year ago when people were complaining about some other stuff.

Our random number generator is actually random, not pseudo random (the entropy is partially generated by the hundreads of players), and now that I think of it, the chances are slightly lower than 5% because my_rand() returns a value between 0 and the parameter (so 21 values in this case).

As for the numbers, I don't believe in them. When I used to play the game the rate was consistent with the 5%

i have bad months and good months with the toadies, we've been through so much together i dont think anything could ever split us apart now.

i once made 150 ts pots (so thats 375 toads eaten) without getting poisoned,

i once got poisoned 8 times in a row

overall they are the best food by far

Well if you are pretty sure then he must have had very bad luck I guess ;)

I didn't make a count but I also don't think that the chance of being poisoned is only 5%. I mix a lot and also use a lot toadstool as food. It is the same with me that sometimes I get poisoned by every couple of mushroom however sometimes (its is more rare) I eat a lot without being poisened. But I agree with Zamirah...I also noticed that eating slower results less poisoning. However I don't complain cause I know poisoning is the price of no cooldown...so who can't accept it, don't eat it. ;)

Well for one thing I am not exaggerating about the numbers. LOL I have made my last 6 lvls of magic just restoring myself from toad poisoning. I just question the 5%. Yes there are times when I go 100 or more toads without getting poisoned but those times are far and few between. I really do get poisoned far more often then 5% of the time. But then I also make much fewer enriched ess.. find fewer stones.. I guess I dl'd the bad luck edition of EL lol. If all this really bothered me I would have quit playing EL long ago. I happen to like the game . And judging by some of the replies to my initial post I am not the only one who has some question about the magical 5%.

Im not a mixer so i dont care, but if i were on ur place i would just sit quietly, coz u never know, next update u can log in and see toads poisoning at 10% or 15% chance, any1 remember artificer perk issue? :icon13:

ROTFL!! :P

I find it feels more than 5% for me too, but that may be because we tend to remember only the bad times, and forget the times when we eat 100 toads without poison. I remember at least once when I hit 6 poisoned toads in a row and of course died!

So now I just try to dilute the toads with veggies or fruits, and try not to rush my food :icon13:

According to my very reliable tests, toadstools do have 100% chance of poisoning you.

I ate 2. Because there are two alternatives, getting poisoned and not getting poisoned, this test should cover both as it was repeated 2 times.

I eat toadstools a lot, and I feel like I actually get poisoned less than 5% most of the time :icon13:

I'm probably just an optimist remembering the good times :P But I guess there are the bad streaks to when it seems like every other toad is poisoned.

Try to eat a little slower, I'm not the only who think it helps.

Clicking too fast seem to give more poison.

I always felt like fast clicking made me get poisoned less

Overall I think toads are good just the way they are, I still die plenty, but they save me a lot of money on FPs.

Toadstools are my precious :icon13: I got poisoned only seldom, let's say under 3%, which is something I can withstand. Either you have bad luck or you haven't eaten enough to reach statistic treshold.

'Shrooms are very unhealthy, most varieties contain poisons toxins, however there are a few brands that do not; distinguishing between poisonous and non-poisonous mushrooms is very difficult, even for Toxicologists.

Cooking is also, normally, an inefficient way of erradicating toxins. Not that ELers cook their toadstools, of course.

Some breeds of mushroom can be deadly, symptoms for extremely potent mushrooms can start showing up merely two minutes after ingestion, or can be delayed up to two weeks. Some cause kidney failure, others induce a feeling of euphoria and hallucinations (the common-day "Magic Mushrooms"), while others can have a severe effect on the brain, causing paralysis/disturbing visions/muscle spasms and other horrible things.

If Entropy ever went ahead with the 'Controband items' idea, I'd say mushrooms are the best way to go. They are naturaly occuring, and you don't need to undergo any complicated procedures to enduce the desired effect. Several new breeds of mushroom would be interesting, other than the Hypomyces lactifluorum (I think, anyway) family we have in EL at the moment.

I'm not so sure about that one, Aphistolas. I mean, if EL is going to introduce such realistic drugs as hallucinogenic mushrooms, why don't we start making heroin out of all the poppies growing everywhere while we're at it? Then Learner could build mountain warlord bots to guard the poppy fields by pking anyone who wanders in, etc. And before you know it, we'll all be more involved with getting into or avoiding the contraband scene than the PK or monster scenes. To be honest, some more "mature" content in EL would be very welcome to me, but I really don't want this to become one of those games that present real life crime as a fun entertainment we should all participate in. I wouldn't want the new top ranking to be EL's #1 drug dealer. But this is kind of off topic, isn't it?

On topic: Considering the dangers of RL wild mushrooms for poisons, I think the rate of poisoning from toads is fine. It's a real risk, as it should be. I use toads often and I only have 90 hp, so I have to adjust the speed of my work for the risk. It's only gotten to be a pain from too many poisonings twice so far.

Oh, and btw, in RL, mushrooms are actually very healthy, not unhealthy. Only the poison ones are unhealthy (to the extreme). Otherwise, we should all be sure to eat our mushrooms, especially shitake and tree ear mushrooms -- they have anti-viral and antibiotic properties. :)

I think one of the most commonly recognized kinds of "toadstools" is Amanita muscaria, or any other member of the Amanita genus. Hypomyces lactifluorum is technically parasitic ascomycete that grows on mushrooms. But Amanita Muscaria are naturally poisonous, and I don't think they have even a 5% chance of being good for you, some of the worlds most toxic mushrooms come from the genus Amanita :)

No, I completely agree. I don't know why, but I seriously think this helps. I tell people to do this too! If we're wrong, at least you and I have reduced our chances of double poisoning since we're paying attention.

At any rate, whatever the chance of getting poisoned, it seems about right to me. It's high enough to make us think about toadstools as a danger, but not high enough to deter players from using them completely.
