i find it interesting that the client fall back on the font.bmp file whenever it cant find the texture its looking for...

That is because the font is the very first texture loaded, so it gets an ID of 0. So, later if a texture doesn't exist, OpenGL displays texture 0. At least it sticks out noticibly instead of beam some otherone that sometimes blends in.
