Small Improvements To The Harvesting - Big Mistake

Recommended Posts

Ent what have you done!

I've logged in and started harvesting silver. After just a few seconds my pickaxe broken.

Well, I've leveled up to harvesting 37 maybe it's time to buy new one.

While in VOTD I see something strange: "Mother Nature got pissed off at killing_king. As such s/he lost 14 health".

I started thinking: what is going on, new feature?

OK, bought brand new pickaxe and back to silver mine.

Harvested 23 times (only!) and lost 50 hitpoints due to "radiation"! Isn't it too much?

Just 20 harvests later my brand new pickaxe broken.

No, it's too much! I'm sitting in Portals Room and not going to do anything until this rule changes.

I'm not going to harvest with a bunch of pickaxes (how many? 10? or maybe 50 to get just about 300 silver ores?), body rests and full armor in case I'm teleported into PK. No way!

Broking pickaxes is not bad idea, but not so often! Make it once in every 10 000 harvests or so. Or at least 1000. One spare pickaxe should be enough!

And one should not lose health so much and often during harvesting!

If things are not going to change soon I quit.

Regards

Randoming killing, hurting and beaming people who harvest is a terrible terrible idea. How many people need to harvest and go it legitly for their trade compared to the number who macro?

What about the newbies who just learned to harvest silver and are busily harvesting away when poof they're sent to a pk map and loose everything?

Adding such uncontrolled negative events is going to cause a lot more problems then it will solve. Sure it'll stop or slow macroing but it will also drive away tons and tons of players.

Now a little random beaming to NON-PK maps or small hp hits after some condition is met like x amount successfully harvested or so many minutes without a map change or movement. But killing someone for harvesting 20 quartz is just stupid. I was killed and nearly lost my brand new excavator cape. Lucky me i found my bag. But really this is a terribly stupid idea.

But if your goal was to drive away everyone who ever liked this game, then congratulations, just leave this server patch on for a week and no one will be playing.

I don't mind saying this sucks. I dont like it no sir not one bit, I finally find a game I can play that I like and the creator pulls this sh**. Well that's not fair not one little bit. What did we ever do to deserve this, the decent ppl who play and enjoy this great game you have created. We support you, we pat you on the back, and for what just so you can slam us with this crap. Your mean man really mean. And if you don't like what I said then tough it's just the truth, you want to delete me fine you want to ban me fine but I'm just being honest. You had something great why did you have to screw it up. Well like my brother always says SMELL YA LATER DUDE.

Wow tried the new system.

Got hit by the wall after 16 harvests and lost 50 mp.

Watch out that wall really hurts.... this sound like to me that Ent has the setting wrong in his code as i sure hope he did not want this stuff happen in a short time like i am hearing about.... if this stay's like this there will be a lot less players or all fighters and no one making anything...

I tested the new system, and here is what I 'found':

Hi, and welcome to Eternal Lands! ......

Game Time: 02:47:11

<starting harvest of diamonds>

Mother Nature got pissed off at Derin. As such, s/he lost 13 health

Derin just hit a teleport nexus, so s/he departed us.

Mother Nature got pissed off at Derin. As such, s/he lost 19 health

Pickaxe's Derin just broke... So sad..

Derin found a Serpent Stone

Pickaxe's Derin just broke... So sad..

A cavern wall collapsed on Derin, and s/he was hit for 50 points. ...

Derin was blessed by the queen of he nature with 673 worth of harvesting exp.

While harvesting, Derin upset a radon pouch, and was hit for 50 points of radiation damage.

Derin found a bag of gold, getting 47 gold coins

Derin was blessed by the queen of he nature with 729 worth of harvesting exp.

Derin was blessed by the queen of he nature with 1246 worth of harvesting exp.

While harvesting, Derin upset a radon pouch, and was hit for 50 points of radiation damage.

A cavern wall collapsed on Derin, and s/he was hit for 50 points....

While harvesting, Derin upset a radon pouch, and was hit for 50 points of radiation damage.

Pickaxe's Derin just broke... So sad..

<stopped - total diamonds collected: 147>

All-in-all I got 16 'events' from harvesting 147 diamonds.

And yes I also got a few 'good' things from it, but that is not the point.

The point being; this is way too much 'happenings' and it sucks really bad.

Keep this up and I will quit this game, because I utterly fail to see any kind of fun in this.

This game is now totally geared towards fighting, and if you (like me) likes to make things instead of breaking them I see no future.

If this idea is to get macroers and cheaters (which I understand you can work around), well think again, because this is spoiling the game for everyone else.

REMOVE IT!

/Derin - soon out of the game if this stays

removeing it would be silly, but toneing down the happenings or maybe makeing it less frequent...

dont toss the baby out with the bath water...

If the baby is dead and the water is poisoned - I say toss them both!

Well like I said in the single post I made, make it so pickaxes break ever so often, and make it so you have to wear gloves to pick flowers and sulfur. That way when they break or the gloves wear then you have to get new ones and the whole auto harvest thing would be for the most part fixed. And yes macroers will prolly find a way around even that but they will also find away around what is going on now. Punishing everyone is not the key, even big name companys like Sony had to find responsible ways to deal with cheaters who play EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies, etc. But making the game so no one can find joy in it but the pk'ers or the cheaters then that's just plain dumb.

personaly i dont see the new harvest stuff in that way. its a typical example of ents overkill. what needs to be done is increased time between events and a reduction in effect, not a complete removal. then it makes people watch their chars when harvesting so that they can take action...

this was in response to derin btw...

I haven't had the time to try out the new system much, so I'll just say this:

If you are a PKer, you can fight other PKers in special maps. If you are not a PKer, then you can stay on the non PK maps, where you don't have to worry about being attacked by other players.

From http://www.eternal-lands.com/

I already had to go to a PK map once for a quest, and I don't intend to visit such maps again...

In my experience - abut 90% or more of what you harvest will render you no experience points at all.

The experience points will (hopefully) come form what you make from those harvested things.

Having said that, I think making harvesting a wierd random thing is just bad.

So there could be a few things that makes harvesting a little less static, but getting killed over and over again should not be one of those things.

And compensation in form of finding gold, serp stones, and getting extra XP is not a good thing either - wont help economy, wont increase the fun.

Personally i like the idea of degrading harvest tools, like pickaxes and gloves. Perhaps there could be a sickle for harvesting those flowers?

And if these items should degrade it should be as slow as weapons degrades, loosing 3 pickaxes in 10 min is not slow btw.

Analysis and Predicted Effects

Economy

- Cloak market prices (especially for excavator cape) would drop. Perks become more attractive, as you now have no guarantee of being safe from danger.

- Resource-gathering has now become limited, in a sense. In general, market prices should start to rise, as unlimited supply is cut off.

- Ring prices would rise, as harvesters might start buying more to get back quickly to their deathbags.

- Macroing and afk-harvesting WILL become a bit harder

- This will cause the balance of wealth to shift towards the fighters and away from peaceful people.

Players

- Many non-fighters will be (and already are) upset, and may leave.

- Game becomes tilted even further towards people with good fighting skills (as Derin pointed out). Achievers and Killers would dominate, Socialisers and Explorers would leave. (To understand these terms, read this) This may have a bad effect on the numerical population of the game (ie. If the Socialiser's numbers fall below the critical level..)

- Newbies may have a hard time leveling up at first...

However, I notice that if you just eliminate PK maps from the list of maps that you can be teleported to, then it should be all right. People will eventually settle down and deal with the challenges (bees, cave-ins, explosions and Mother Nature) - it's really the PK'ing that they don't like, since it's viewed as an unfair loss.

If the chances of events happening get reduced a bit (a lot) this would be a nice addition to harvesting. The only thing i dont like is being teleported to PK zones. That plainly sucks, cause most harvesters are harvesters because they dont like fighting.

If this idea gets combined with Karma, it would be very interesting indeed. High Karma, good things will happen; Low karma, bad stuff will happen. (On average of course)

At least i hear nobody complain about harvesting being boring anymore

sorry to say so for our developers, i know how proud one usually is having implemented new stuff into a proggie, but this new *feature* just plain sucks

harvesting gets close to impossible. i got my pickaxe destroyed twice and almost got myself killed without any cause just by the good- or in this case rather bad-will of some so-called *mother nature* (nice alias, devel team ) - and I hadn't even mined 50 lumps of titanium ore..

if you want to make this game into some breed of paranioa, go ahead, you're doing quite well, but if you want to keep players at it and have fun with it it's about time to disband this new bug or at least dramatically reduce it in effect

I think this harvesting change is an excellent idea, except for the pk'ing part. I think it pushes a completely unfair edge to harvesting.

If that were to be removed, as Lyanna said, i think it would add a healthy balance to the game.

Guest Sentok

I'm suprised we haven't gotten much (if any) admin feedback on this, considering how many players are leaving so fast.

I think if teleporting and killing were removed the rest would be ok and even nice. It would be effective against macro harvesters and make harvesting more funny . Maybe pickaxe breaking should happen less often too.
