Types Of Players In Online Multiplayer Games

Recommended Posts

Players who suit MUDs

Found this on another game's forums, but I thought it was pretty cool! It's a report about the different player types that are commonly found in online games: Achievers, Explorers, Socialisers and Killers, as well as ways to develop the game so as to accomodate all 4 types for a stable balance. It's quite long, but hope the admins read it! Lots of good general ideas there...

P.S. I'm primarily an Explorer (as well as a "positive" killer)

Hm, this is a very good article indeed...I didnt' read it all yet, but i'll make this a sticky because i think it's important.

I really got a crack outta this one:

"Why is it that if you carry the uranium you get radiation

sickness, and if you put it in a bag you still get it, but if

you put it in a bag and drop it then wait 20 seconds and pick it

        up again, you don't?"

Because..some people in our game also discovered some really strange things..and i just have no idea how they found it :P

Okay, just a short analysis on how this article relates to EL (I can go on forever, but I don't have the time to do so...so it'll be very short). If you look at the section called "Changing the Player Type Balance", and the list of things that can be done to change the balance, you can see easily where EL is:

EL emphasises PLAYERS over WORLD:

- Many communication facilities (with even more being planned)

- Player on player commands being added (emotes, etc. once cal3d is done)

- world size is small

- connectivity between rooms is easy (ie. changing chat channels and maps are both very easy)

- building privileges are given to a select few

- fairly small number of mobiles (animals and monster spawns - therefore people resort to PvP training at times)

EL also emphasises ACTING over INTERACTING:

- game manual, automap, autolog.

- rewards for achievement (higher levels DEFINITELY are better than lower ones)

- extensive level/class system (Skills, Nexuses, Attributes and Books)

- many commands relating to fights (in fact, almost everything is fight-centered, eventually. Manufacturers make weapons and armour only, crafters make rings and medallions for fighting/transport, etc. etc.)

- (fairly) large puzzles, requiring time and commitment to complete (although they ARE pretty straightforward). We, however, do have small puzzles too, in the form of NH-broadcasted contests and events.

Therefore, according to this report, the game is primarily slanted towards high numbers of Achievers and Killers, which is also indicated by the popularity of the war events and manhunt contests. However, we also have a fair amount of Explorers, which is probably due to the 'beta' status (Explorers like finding bugs :P), which is why we're not overrun by Killers and why the game is constantly evolving (lots of fan sites, newbie helpers and patches being made). We don't have many players who are PRIMARILY socializers (although we have a lot of people who have socializing as their second function).

Well, basically, that's EL's "flavour" at the moment, from what I can see. The question is, of course: what do the dev's want? Is this particular centre of gravity okay with them? Is this what they're aiming for, or do they want to move to a different sort of balance between the types?

(and I have to go now, so can't type more... <_< )

I'm an achiever and an explorer in this game (if I have to pick only 2 :) )

In our guild we promote studies and hard work, thus we have a friendly level competiton. So that would be the achiever part.

I personally love mapping (trying to get the hang of the mapmaker too), and I have made all interior maps (the CC map is public and available from Fred's site) and just started on making overland maps.
