Automatic name completion in PM's

Recommended Posts

You can try to send a PM to /the and it might go to the_piper or the_ryanking, depending on who is online or not.

Same with other names which start with the same letters.

This is not only annoying, if you get flooded with messages, which are meant for other players who's name start with the same letters, the problem is, that you can't send a personal message to the player (A), while the other player, who's name starts with the same letters ( B ) is online.

That does not only cause PM flood with unwanted PM's, it also causes messages being send to ppl who should'nt receive them.

Why not implement that the server refuses to send PM's, if the server sided name completion finds more than one name which fits, and send an error message to the PM sender instead of sending the PM to someone, who should'nt receive it?

"Player name is not unique, please type the full name"

Or, the name can end with a dot '.', so the server knows that no name completion is wanted.

Something like that.

We have been asking for a system to stop name completion when you want it literally for years, including the option with the full stop

after the name to signal 'no completion please'.

There are cases where the wrong person got locked because the character targetted had logged off and another char

with a longer name starting with the same letters was still on. Typing the full name doesn't help here.

(e.g. we have on-line atm a 'solo' and a 'solon'...)

But in the case you cite as an example, the solution is simple: don't be lazy and type a few letters more.

Auto name completion has been one of the banes of my existence in EL both as a player and as a mod. I would love to see it gone and have been begging to have it removed for years and years and years.

I like auto-complete. But as has been noted, it should fail if there is more than one match to the sub-string you entered.

Simple solution is to allow use of $ to indicate end of name; it would only match whole names that way.

/sax would go to sax or saxum whatever login is active

/sax$ would go to sax only.
