Lured into unfair pk by STR8Jacket

I am DarkWizard, not WinterMage, but I got permission to use his account for this message.

This morning, I was lured into a pk arena by STR8Jacket and then killed by some summoned white tigers while STR8Jacket stayed out of the arena and then bagjumped me, taking my Black Dragon Cuisses and my Medallion of Life:

And the rules asked for unedited logs, so there are other pms in there and at one point I did gossip someone to see if they were on and then changed my mind, so dont take offense if I gossiped you.

 

Note, I was cautious. You will see that he assured me the PK area was no drops. He also insisted that I wear good armor. Further, he insisted that I go in first, and he never went into the arena.

 

This is the first time something like this happened to me, so I was not on the lookout.

 

I have also heard that something very similar to this happened earlier this morning to another player (omitting his name on purpose here), but I don't have the evidence showing that.

You get a warning message, when you enter a PK area for a reason.

 

When you still enter, it's your problem and your own risk to get killed and lose stuff.

 

And why is someone, who can't even kill a white tiger, carrying BD armor into a PK area?

I don't disagree with The Piper, and someone with more worldly experience would have known better. Certainly this is a learning experience for DarkWizard.

 

At the same time, looking over the transcript, it seems clear to me (someone with a bit more worldly experience) that Str8jacket was doing everything he could to get DarkWizard into THAT arena - the arena that his mate was in and ready to summon a bunch of tigers. Granted, there may be no direct evidence here to prove that was the plan, but it certainly seems likely. Moreover, other players on today related the same sort of events happening to another 'victim,' if you will, carried out by the same players who did this to DarkWizard.

 

It seems horrible to me that someone would do this to another player. I think it brings the whole game down when people behave like this.

 

No game rules may have been broken (that's why this issue isn't under ABUSE), but preying on players like this is just wrong.

Few tips. Likely most of the people reading these posts will be those already relatively-secure in their knowledge of the game and its players but perhaps if you are a GM or simply a fellow player you could take it upon yourself to make new players aware of these general best practices:

 

1. If you are a low-level player, or even a recent, high-level char-buyer imo - expensive armor/weapons don't belong in your storage nor on you. Were they given to you - sell them, don't leave around the temptation of wearing something that you shouldn't at this point. Get yourself a few nice pairs of augs and train to your heart's content. If in doubt as to whether or not given armor/weapons are appropriate at this point in your development, rest assured - they're not. Don't bother about PvP/PK where such armor/weapons have become mandatory until much later in your character development. Train on creatures as has been detailed in several helpful guides already.

 

2. Figure out the current going rate of rostos. Double this amount. If whatever you are carrying/wearing ever exceeds this newly doubled amount - carry a rosto. If you don't have one and/or can't afford one - don't carry/wear the stuff... simple. There are finer points to this practice such as taking into consideration the likelihood of someone coming across any potential db, or whether or not you expect that someone you particularly dislike will be around (in which case you may prefer losing a rosto rather than items of even less value to them), but in any event the basic idea, (double the value of rosto = carrying a rosto), will suffice for most situations. As far as no-drop PvP/PK - see point 1.

 

3. Breaking a bit from the above simple rules but... spend some time reevaluating your ability to make decisions which rely on variable data. In this case - other players. Consider that they're out to get you. Consider that they're not. Consider what you stand to gain/lose from either of the above possibilities (in this case 10k and BD armor/MoL/etc. respectively). Finally, consider what the likelihood of either being true/false is given what you actually know (e.g. - he said DPa was ok and now he's stating a strong preference for NC - sounds fishy, etcetera). There will undoubtedly be errors in judgment along the way but if given a certain focus you will at least minimize your losses and maximize your gains (whether this be concerning friendships, gc, or whatever you consider of particular importance).

 

Any of these 3 points would have been helpful for DarkWizard in this situation. But there will be similar situations to come and of course this is not strictly confined to new players. Long-term players are taken advantage of as well, generally resulting from their failure to make such reasonable assessments as point 3 is meant to address. You likely do not seek company with birds of prey but rest assured - they seek you... so be prepared. If any of this caution seems a bit overly-pessimistic for you I will only say that I believe it ultimately promotes optimism and good-natured relations. Better to employ certain strategies for keeping those at bay who are best kept there than forfeit degrees of trust to those worthy as a result of having been taken advantage of.

In this instance he had tons of warning signs that even himself had picked up on. Should have followed his gut. Sorry to say it, but you deserved this hard lesson.

 

I don't really mean for that to sound rude, but come on! You had a feeling it was not legit, you asked someone else who gave you the answer you were looking for and you still walked into the trap.

 

Everyone has to learn one way or the other. This one was a well deserved lesson for you. Follow your gut feeling next time.

For the record, I at least do not consider it sad that such players exist. In the first place, if I can divert for a minute from what I have considered it necessary to repeat on occasion in game - that it is in fact a game... there are still real people behind the characters who are influenced in real life by actions within the game. While they may be capable of learning patience from grinding their way to the top so too are there lessons to be learned of a different variety concerning subjects such as those expressed here. And lessons in EL come cheap. Lunch money cheap. A hamburger cheap. Even in the case of one recent, relatively-profitable case - that of Spartan Warrior's various exploits, we're still talking a night or two of heavy drinking on the town.

 

In the second place, concerning real life in it's most direct form where valuable lessons are generally far more costly, (monetarily or otherwise), without discrediting the role non-zero-sum circumstances have played in the development of mankind it is still competition which has driven life forward - be it amongst communities/nations/individuals/etcetera. Some competition is more palatable, and some, as in the case of scamming/luring, (which rely on the transgression of trust) - not so much. Nevertheless, without competition of various forms you would soon see murky waters - a result of their stagnation. As such, regardless of the effects people of a certain nature may have on their selected victims - they do still benefit the system as a whole in their own way.

Ok, we all agree that DarkWizard showed poor judgment going into that arena. He obviously sensed danger, but likely thought it would be in the form of STR8Jacket himself. He did not anticipate the well laid trap. Good learning experience etc. and better he learn that in game. Good.

 

How about the other side of the equation??

 

In all the replies, no one has denied the fact that this was a trap. Everyone sees that this was an intentional deception in order to steal his stuff.

 

We have to be very careful as a community not to be seen as celebrating unfair play in the game any more than we do in real life. Yes, the game can in some ways reflect RL, and especially because of that, we cannot show tolerance to this sort of deviant behavior, just because most of us think the victim should have known better... or are we really that desensitized?

 

In rl, every woman should know not walk alone at night, but that does not excuse the horrible actions of her attackers.

 

No, taking advantage of the unsuspecting is wrong. We cannot be passive on that point. There are predators in game as well as in rl, and their deeds need to be called out for what they are. There will always be these sorts of ppl/players, and we don't need to encourage or excuse their actions just because we are glad that rl lessons can be learned in game.

 

If the game were more like medieval RL, I can tell you from chat in game, that there probably would have been a lynch mob formed and the perps would have been hunted down - not that I condone that either...

One person might feel bad for a moment but I really doubt that loosing some items you earned ingame is a problem for a normal player. I have lost stuff, and have gained stuff and it is all part of the game. Making drama out of it is also part of the game and some people like that as well

 

Just make sure you keep having fun and do not see it as 'work' to get the items back...

WinterMage, if we really start comparing EL to RL, it's actually ok to do such things. RL has laws, EL too. In RL you get punishment if you break the laws, same in EL. In this situation, EL rules weren't broken which means no punishment needed.

Today, Str8Jacket tried to lure zelo from ^@^ guild, and their GM, Devnul pm'ed for help.

 

He tried to lure zelo to the PK zone of Zirak, which is after ogres, you know. And I went there and told zelo to pm me when he's close, and I waited invis.

 

Then our dear lurer Str8Jacket came in, but wasnt expecting someone +140 a/d with thermal and fire arrow hitting on him I guess, so he died, and what a chance, without rosto!

 

Our dear lurer friend dropped me Col, BD cuisses and Orc Slayer. I want to post the conversation with Str8Jacket after the death.

I would like to know what lesson he claims that he have learned. As far as i know, someone from my guild (dont wanna put names) killed him and he dropped COL and something more.

A very known scammer (120+ a/d) was there to help pick the bag, not sure about that.

 

If the lesson he has learned is that there can allways b some stronger than u, so just scam noobs, i think is not worth any words any more
